Looked up one of the cases and manuals on flea bay. The manual ALONE recently sold for $50 plus !

Send me the money...I'll give you the case too !

I got a homicide report. My guy was on the losing end. It was either his mom or sisters locker. But my reaction was WOW :o

Whoa...that's not the kind of "WOW" factor you want to see if you have a connection to a locker that got sold!

I also got about 20 or so shoulder patches reading California Correction Officer (or some such). I see that police patches on eBay are going for about $5 a pop, so some hope there for a good return on the $375 investment.
This guy also had some LA police officer patches and some from other places, so those alone will help foot the bill on the way to the profit.

I don't know if I can sell some of the state printed books (more like binders with papers inside) but the other books are true class-designed texts which hopefully are still being used and will sell.

One true military duffel bag had a tear gas mask in case....probably from guard duty. His black duty boots need a little sole work...unglued at heel.

No ideas at the moment; kind of hard to come up with something interesting about a storage locker door !
But, someone will come up with some ideas. Easier for me with words than pics.  ;D

Sounds pretty decent for the price.  Were the cases visible or hidden in a box?  Must have been hidden or it would have sold for 2k plus!  How many people showed up at your auction today?

Box with empty pistol cases was along the back wall, and I had a moment of excitement until I picked up the first one, then the 2nd one, etc. I held out hope, but not much. The "rugs" were in a different box and my heart jumped a bit then, but I wasn't surprised when they were empty. I have guns and I would NEVER leave them in a locker...but, I have gotten some over the years, so some people do.

The crowd was not bad. This was a well-known auctioneer and crowd was about 40. Most newbies but 6 to 10 old-timers. Newbies WERE buying, but one old-timer got a lkr for $475 with a set of Klipsch La Scala speakers. He says they're valuable (I know Klipsh in general is). He knows this because he mistakenly sold a set at the flea to one of the big eBay guys....learned the hard way !

Seven years ago last month....my first locker.
Got it for $250; a 10 x 10 with good quality furn showing. The 3 things I remember about it are:

1) got a Coleman 1800 watt generator (kept it and used it for several years)
2) got a nice Craftsman roll-around with some Craftsman wrenches, etc
3) There was a computer desk, TV stand, but no computer, no TV. I truly think the property manager got those !

Edit: Feb 20, 2011

4) Reminded on a cold flea day that the Dyna-glo propane heater I've used all these years came from
    this locker.

Yep, you read it right 7 (count 'em 7) pistol cases....and all empty !

1 Ruger, 1 Colt, 1 S&W, 2 Glock, 2 non-name (Wal-Mart) and 2 pistol "rugs". I'll keep the rugs and sell the cases on eBay...they go from $10 to $20 or so depending on model. I also sell them in that range at the flea.

This was a 10 x 10 for $375; very clean looking with only 1 good mattress, no other furn. Lots of boxes, totes. Turns out the guy was a California Correctional Officer. One bag with his heavy jacket (with patch), pants, shirts, dress cap (with shield). Lots of black (thatch pattern) leather belts, baton holders, handcuff case (no cuffs), etc.
Did get a nice black baton (should be worth a few bucks).

Found a nice zippo (Harley Davidson) with HD black leather holder to go with it; all in a gift box. Other stuff of similar nature inluding two Bolo ties with silver and nice stone; $60 price tag on one.

On and on including boxes of papers, several boxes of criminology texts, 12 empty Nintendo DS game boxes.
I think this was a single dad with two daughters who visited, but kept the REAL goodies (like the DS box) with them when they went home to mom.

Wish the pistols had been there but....Happy with the locker  !

Finally watched this this morning.  What I learned:

1. Wear a mask
2.  Grenades are bad, m'kay?
3.  Don't put your dead relatives in storage.

Thanks is all....
Orlando
The running of buyers and film crew from the locker with the dummy grenades was hilarious. You would be in more danger from cockroaches and mice (hanta virus) than grenades, even if they were REAL. Grenades, like guns, don't kill people; people who don't know about them kill people.

Now a dropped glass gallon container of muriatic acid (or similar) in a confined space would work a number on your nervous system.

As Ironman said the most important thing is to NOT spend money you can't afford. If things go south you won't be a happy camper.

If prices moderate a bit you could get a pretty good locker for $200 to $300 and hopefully make some money off it.
Of course if you made a bad judgement about the contents and they aren't that good, now you're talking break even or worst case, losing money.

I don't think anyone can give you a $ amount that would work for seed money, but consider all the costs before you get into this game. As Ironman said, locker buy, dump run(s), storage (if needed), rental space at flea (if needed) and of course GASOLINE.  They all add up and have to be subtracted from whatever your total sales figure is before you know how much PROFIT you made.

I see the "wow" factor in the majority of the lockers.  They open the door and I go "WOW, look at all that CRAP"!

THIS (above quote) is the most accurate WOW factor made on any regular basis. The one in 10 (or one in 20 or 1 in 100) WOW  factor is a true rarity with most goods being of the ordinary household type. Sure they make money but that real WOW factor of a  cache of coins, stamps, rare collectibles, guns, high-end electronics, etc, etc is a RARE BIRD. Nope, I haven't found any rare birds, but I have gotten stuffed deer head, squirells, a pheasant !

haha I appreciate the effort.

One of the problems with my location is that I'm close enough to both Ohio and West Virginia that I could look up auctions in 3 states, with very few being close to me. It'll prob be awhile though until I venture to an out of state auction though

When I first started 7 years ago I went to auctions in multiple cities within 75 miles. Now I've cut that back to maybe 30 miles. I found quickly that JUNK is JUNK no matter where it's stored. Sure I miss a good one now and again, but think of the gas and TIME I've saved over the years by NOT going to every auction.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Weekend Auctions?
« on: February 16, 2011, 10:01:27 AM »
The short answer is YOU CAN'T tell if something has been removed.

The longer answer is that generally speaking a locker tenent can pay right up to the locker door being thrown open, so if THAT happened and then the lkr owner found something missing, it would be a problem for the property manager/staff to answer as to why something was missing.

It does't happen that much (imho) but it does happen.

The property managers can manipulate the time aspect of when auctions happen and they have a pretty good feeling about whether someone would show up or not (sometimes they have corresponded with people in jail for instance).

Also, if there are multiple cut locks on the ground it means they have paid up at least once, have gained access and may have removed quality items, then defaulted again. If there are three locks on the ground they've had access twice after defaulting and have defaulted a third time. What does THAT tell you?

There are so many combinations of possibilities that there is no ONE right answer. You have to trust what you SEE. If you are willing to gamble on anything else, that is on you.
