Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Human Cremains

Not saying I would do this personally, but I have known others to take urns to flea markets and dump the contents on the ground under the tables and use an old rag to wipe the inside out and put it on the table for sale.

I have pretty much given up on trying to separate the documents. As we all know every auctioneer says in the beginning of the auction to return all personal documents to the facility. I have learned that auctioneers just say that to protect themselves. I want to say almost 98% of the facilities will not take them back. I have tried over and over to give them back but nobody wants them.

I've about gotten to that point too. I still try to give back personals but I get the feeling many managers don't bother to try to contact the tenants.

Had one manager tell me after dropping off the personals that the former tenant had till the end of the day to pick up the contents or it was going in the dumpster. That pissed me off cause it takes a lot of time to sort out personals and we know in this biz time is money!

Had another manager tell me recently that "porn" is not considered personals to drop off. I was like "what the hell are you doing going through the personals boxes I dropped off!"

We wven have a some facilities that say do NOT under any circumstances bring personal items back!

I like to think I'm doing the right thing by returning the personal items but more and more I think I'm wasting my time.

Craigslist / Re: Do you deliver?

with items like furniture if you have a truck to move it its definately a selling point as its a huge hassle and expense to have to rent a truck to go buy a couch or something. one thing i often do with delivery is make the person come see the item in person and pay in person before delivery. i find sometimes people have you drive to their place and then try to renegotiate the deal and they have leverage at that point since you wasted time and gas money and want to get the deal done

That's exactly what I do!

I mean physically travel to your location. Not talking about Ebay sales overseas.  ;)

I had a guy make an approximate 520 mile round trip to buy some furniture from me last month!   :o

How about you?

Delivery is always an option. Ive only denied one delivery request because it would have been a 350 mile round trip over the mountains. The gas would have cost more then the piece I was selling.

Typically delivery is included in the price (furniture) or if it is a small less expensive piece then I will add in a delivery charge. Most people don't mind the extra delivery charge.

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Where is the Haff Ton Pawn Shop?

No wonder my flea market sales haven't been exploding, I don't have a sign that says "Vintage Bada$$ Stuff"! Pure marketing genius!  ::)

General Storage Auction Talk / Fingerprints

Do any of you all wipe your fingerprints off of certain items you sell on Ebay or at the flea market or whereever? Things like firearms, ammunition, knives, electronics, jewelry, etc.?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Animals in Storage Units

Only come across rats, mice, roaches, ants, spiders, wasps. Some facilities have a bunch of alley cats running around at night.

Got stung by a wasp one time. Another time I got bit by a spider. The side of my face swelled up and I was worried it was a black widow or brown recluse spider bite. Luckily the swelling went down the next day.

Did I mention spider bites as being another fringe benefit of storage auctions!  :)

Ton jones Funny .......we are not going to disclose the location at this time due to the fact it is a working shop

My customers: "Where are you located, I'd like to come by and see what you have for sale?"

Me: (In a snooty voice) "Sorry, my store is in an undisclosed location due to it being a working shop." "We wouldn't want just any old riff-raff showing up to buy my merchandise!"

LOL! Based on thier profits, it's either in Beverly Hills, or Dubai City!

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: $$rate of unit vs contents
« on: January 31, 2013, 09:59:16 AM »
Yes, I do use the quality of the facility and the rental costs  as a consideration, but not really as a direct impact on how I am bidding. Typically, what you see is what you get, but if there is a nice looking unit, at a nice higher rent facility, it might influence me to up my final bid limit by $25 or $50 if the bidding is getting close to my limit AND it looks like the bidding is winding down.

If the unit has already blown by my limit by a few hundred dollars, I'm not going to jump in just because we are at one of the nicer facilities.

I have to agree with the group on this one. Multiple cut locks inside the door make me more leary about bidding to high.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Disney Items In Lockers
« on: January 30, 2013, 07:45:54 AM »
Just found some plush toy cleaner (stuffed animals) in a locker. Think I will give it a try and see if I can sell some of these rascals instead of throwing them in the dump. I have about 10 "life size" plush toys I would rather sell than toss.

If that's the case, we need to work out a deal bringing furniture from the south up north because the profit margins are similar to illegal narcotics.

I can hear the headlines now. The war on drugs is over. Mexican drug lords have abandoned their former lifestyle to take up the more profitable transportation of dressers, bed frames and dining sets.  :D

I would imagine that quality furniture is in high demand after the flood.

No doubt, I would be lucky to get half Mike's asking price on his furniture around here, unless I opened a high end furniture store and had a clientel ready to pay those prices.

Great finds Mike! I wish I could get that much for furniture down south. Just a couple of observations from the "Southern Hustler".

That burled walnut dresser, $1000 with no mirror? Is the mirror missing? I would be surprised if it didn't originally come with one.

Might consider changing the format of your text so you downplay the estimated retail price, and enlarge your asking sale price.

I would check the photos a little more carefully. Maybe those prices are affordable in your area, but if I was asking $1000 for a dresser (and it is a very nice dresser) I would make sure there weren't cigerette butts in the foreground and junk scattered in the background.

Just sayin.... ;)

Like the Teacher said! Those are the funniest to run up! There is a auction house I go to that allows call in bids. I haven't used the service yet.
