General Storage Auction Talk / Re: partnerships??? good or bad??

I guess there are always going to be people that want in on the action. ;)  I forgot to mention that this same friend of mine that wants to partner with me is severely claustrophobic.  I mentioned that sometimes the storage units are indoors and that when it is crowded it can feel a bit "stuffy."  Her response was that I could go in and bid for the unit without her.  So,  I even have to win the unit without her help!?  Really?

lol, advise her that this is not the kind of job for her. Things get stuffy even while cleaning out lockers. and IMO, you like the locker, you bid the locker, you win the locker, YOU CLEAN THE LOCKER. You can hire people to do all of that. Although personally, at this moment in time. I like to do everything from step one to the final step. Which is dumping the trash, donating to an organization of some type, or a final sale.

I have only purchased one locker and I have already had two people offer to do it "with" me.  I did manage to find some pretty great things in the locker, (gold jewelry, some instruments, nice furniture and a few antiques) so I think my friends want in on the action.  One of my friend is begging to go to the next auction with me and wants to split the price of a unit.  Part of me was thinking it would be nice to have help loading and unloading things but the more I think about it I have a funny feeling that I will end up doing ALL of the work.  The stuff will be put in my garage, where I will have to spend hours going through it and my trash cans will get full.  Then I will have to take pictures and post everything, since she said she doesn't know how to use the computer that well.  Then I will be driving all the good antiques to the dealer.  To top it off, she already mentioned that there were things in the locker I purchased that she would have liked so I have a feeling she would pick through everything first and guilt me into keeping it and then have me do the rest of the work to sell everything and then keep half of the profit!  Since I have a tendency to be WAY to nice, my husband has intervened and said, "NO WAY!"  I have not even told her yet but I am going to have to tell her tomorrow that the auction she wants to go to with me on Wednesday, she is on her own.  Why can't she just buy her own?  It is probably because she want's me to do the work and she gets paid for it.

I have had several people approach me to partner up with. Each time I have turned it down. Two of them were people I know from the neighborhood. I seen them go out a few times. Never seen them actually bid, even though they talked liek they were buying every unit. And to my surprise (hint of sarcasm) they are no longer doing it. My brother in law wanted to partner up with me, and yet again I have turned it down. He has never been out there. Then some guy my wife works with, he wanted to partner up with me. He would of been the only applause-able  one I would even consider, since he has a large bank roll, and does resell already with high end appliances. But yet again, I turn it down anyway. I dont like partners.

Well I have found alot of bad nasty things. Anything from used meth pipes, dirty needles, litterally piles of those. A pair of dirty underwear, one used tampon, 3 used rubbers, 2 *****s, 1 vibrator, 1 dirt diaper, one microwave full of rotten slimy ramen noodles, one fridge full of spoiled food, mmmm, that is all I can think of at the moment. My wife gets repulsed from it all. Me I only got sick from cleaning out the fridge and cleaning out the microwave. Which I kept because a week before that mine went out. Everything else didnt really sicken me to much. kind of expected to see all taht stuff. And expected to see dirty fridges and the like, but the smell, well ya, lets just say when it comes to strong odors like that I have a really weak stomach.

So words of wisdom newcomers, WEAR GLOVES, lol. Guarantee if you dont, when you come across some of this stuff, AND YOU WILL, you will wish you did have some gloves on.

Ive noticed, I have no explanation of why this is. Honestly, and anyone can call me out and say I am a hater or worthless selfish bastard. But I dont really care how mayn join or dont join. This is good for Drew, and this is good for active posters like myself, Rules, Teacher, Movieman, and TC. This way we are not just talking to each other all the time, lol. But I get a feeling, alot of these noobies that are coming in, wont be here for long. Although I have seen promise from a few that they will be here for a good while.

Well me personally, I see about $300 worth of goods. And more than likely there will be nothing more than general merchandise in those boxes. That and personals. The only thing that really lightens things up is in the far back. Cant really tell if that is an authenticate solid wood antique couch, or just a cheap remake. If it is real, then maybe $400 - $500 worth of goods can be seen. If he can find the right buyer for it. But if it is real, then it would leave about another 40% chance, IMO, that there will be at least one to two boxes full of antiques. But no way in hell would I pay what this guy bidded on it. Not a locker this light.

I also get a  feeling that this unit is staged. First you see a walker and wheel chair, then all the way in the back you see what could be an antique sofa wrapped in plastic, with a microwave from the 80s in front of it. Nothing else but an old lawn chair and boxes staked yay high.

Because pawn stars and americna pickers have content. Storage wars has a little bit of content but mostly fighting and bickering.

I am glad to hear this, so that even if they have several more different type of storage war type reality shows, it wont matter, people just are not interested in as much. So they will be jumping on the next BIG thing. Whatever that may be. Maybe exterminating with Billy or something, lol.

Oh almost forogt, I could actually care less about American Pckers, to me it has lost its Entertainment,. However I still love Pawn Stars. Even though I dont watch alot of it.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Too lucky on my first Unit?
« on: August 15, 2011, 11:15:39 PM »
Hi.  I decided to venture out and attend my very first auction a few weeks ago.  There were 6 units for sale and 9 bidders there.  The first two had nothing at all exciting in them (it looked like baby things and some boxes of paper work for a business) so I was surprised when they sold for about $50 each.  The third unit had tons of furniture but it did not look like very high quality furniture.  I was afraid of that for my first unit.  It sold for $180.  The fourth unit is where I bit.  It had an old steamer trunk, some musical instrument cases, a pottery barn type storage bench and various boxes and bags.  Even though it was my first auction ever I decided to go for it.  I made a few noob mistakes and bid against myself once (or twice.  I am not sure) but I won the unit for $280.  I was very excited since I thought I could make my money back just from what I saw in there.  Of course, as soon as I opened the first bag of drum cymbals and noticed that almost all of them were cracked my heart sank.  There was one good one in there though.

Anyways, at this point I spent $280 but I have made over $700 on the unit (only $420 in profit).  Some of my finds were $300 in gold and silver jewelry (which I sold to a jeweler but might sell to an auctioneer next time) some actual cash, $20 in foreign bills and $4 in change) the cymbal and some stands sold for almost $200, the furniture sold for $100 and some DVD's that sold as well.  (There were also a ton of empty DVD cases in a box too. Do people keep empty DVD cases?  That is weird to me) Anyways, I kept the steamer trunk because I really like it, as well as some collectible rocks and geodes.  Also, one antique Asian jewelry box is up for auction and might bring an additional $100 to $150 on top of all of this.

So, I am wondering if I am just really lucky or if if maybe I have a good eye for this?  I am not sure, but so far I am having way too much fun with this. :) Of course there was a bunch of trash and very strange items in the unit that I had to toss and go through (why in the world do people hold on to old batteries and sex toys?  Weird) but other than that it was not hard work at all.  Will the fun wear off, did I have some beginners luck?   I guess it waits to be seen . . .

For most people the fun wears out. For me, I get to excited during the bids, especially if I know I am winning at a good bargain. I get even more excited about going through the unit. I also get excited when I acquired something and end up selling it to someone that says that they have been looking for ever for one just like this. That makes my day.

The only part I have always hated, it hauling it all off. Everything else I love. This is the same with most people, however more than half of them start to hate it, just like they hate any other job they do. This can and does become hard work after awhile. So it depends on the individual's mind frame on this business.

As far as lucky, well truthfully, I do not know you, nor did I see what really went on at the auction, but even so, only time will tell if it is luck or skill.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: fire arms
« on: August 14, 2011, 08:13:16 PM »
I am new and attended my first auction a few days ago. I missed out on a couple $20 units because it sold so fast. I learned. My question tho is what is the law concerning firearms in the units? The auctioneer said that if he "sees it" he confiscates it and takes it to the police and whoever bought the unit loses out.

On the auction hunters show that I just watched this very thing happened and the auctioneer did in fact confiscate it, but he informed everyone (before bidding) that the winning bidder could go with him when he turns it in to a gun dealer and could keep the gun if it passed the gun check....and paying the fees for the check. That makes more sense to me. I don't know why they would even be responsible tho. It seems that the winning bidder would be responsible for doing all that.

The auctioneer where I went also said that the original owner could also reclaim it at the police station. Now that makes no sense to me at all. If that was the case, why couldn't the original owner reclaim anything and everything from the locker?
Your help is appreciated.

Really depends on state law. Some places confiscate and buyer loses out completely, others ig gets confiscated and checked then turned back to you if it clears. Others even if they see it, wont take it.

Something that may help you and others out as well. IS after you gathered the initial information from papers etc. The day before, like an hour or less before they close, call them and see how many lockers they have left, (even if it is listed with 15 lockers, still call, I didnt once and when I got there all of them but one was paid off, and there was a large crowd, 60+) If I would of known there was only one left I would not even have gone out there, and went to an alternative one taht was having at same time on the other side of town. So do call them either the day before, or if the auction is late enough, then on same day.

It is different for everyone. You just need to come up with your own business plan and stick with it.Don't take your last couple of hundred dollars and put it all in a locker.Have enough to last you several months to get going.Network you resources in your area so yo know where to sell your items.Don't be afraid to check out flea markets, estate sales etc to spplement your cash flow.It is hard work and you figured out your hourly income sometimes its not muck but other times....... Good luck.

I second this, it is going to be different from each individual. no real wrong or right way to do it. Some things work great for this person may not work for you. I went in this business with $800 cash, with my own personal truck. No trailer. Did not hire out, and did not rent space. As I progressed I rented trailers, hired help, and rented a inventory locker for myself.

I beg to differ with this statement. On auction hunters, you hear them say that they lose money on 80% of the lockers they buy.

Once again, I just don't see where this come from. You don't have to lose money in this business if you bid conservatively.

I can tell you where that came from. Look at that show, and lets jsut say for an example that they are completely 100% real. They toss and break stuff that is mediocre, which ya is not worth much, but IMO if it is worth something and dont hold onto to long, it becomes worth it since most stuff you find in lockers is general merchandise, not what has been keyed as a jackpot unit.

So to some it up, Auction Hunters over pays on lockers, then over estimates on WHAT THEY WILL get for it. And toss out all the general merchandise. So ya if I was buying like that, then 80% of my lockers would be losing money.

So it really all depends on how you plan to sort and sell the merchandise that you bought. At least that is how I look at it.

Lol - I'm a long way from a "gushing optimist".  Even raising my eyebrows at some of the other disclaimers and such I'm finding in papers.  Really starting to wonder how many storage places do bid on auctions if they reserve the right and also how many reject a bid.  I would think they would be happy to reclaim any money.  Shrug - it will be a learning expirence and soon I'll be able to stop asking so many questions.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice / comments.

In my area, all they really care about is if it just gets out of there space so they can rent it out again. Seen them go for only a dollar or 5 dollars at times. Just take notes of which facilities will rather hold onto a unit if it dont sell at a certain bid. Then also take not on auctioneers. Most of the time, the auctioneer wont let it go below x amount of dollars. I have one here who wont sell a unit if it does not go over 50 dollars. and another who wont let it go below 20 dollars. Which I can understand, since they are there to make money too.
