I have bought them for $1 (with the auctioneer paying the $1) and for as much as $2,900.

How about you?

I used to go 50 miles or more, but when I saw the same stuff there that I saw in my immediate area I cut that out almost entirely.  I know result will vary based on how rural or metro an area you live in, but give this poll a shot anyway.

Flea Markets / Re: Anybody?
« on: February 08, 2011, 09:13:55 AM »
Yep, the flea is one of three ways I make money; flea, eBay, Craigslist. I don't do garage sales because I sell at the flea every Saturday. A flea will get more foot traffic than a garage sale...at least that's my opinion and seems reasonable assumption for most areas...your area may be different....and if there's no flea market, then garage sale is the only way to go!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Whole Bin or By the Piece?
« on: February 08, 2011, 09:07:20 AM »
There is one place here that does by the piece. They often do 30 to 50 units at a time and at one piece at a time it can take all day to get them done.

As the person brings the single items out of the locker, one thing we have noticed is that jewelry boxes go immediately to the little trailer they roll down the aisle....in other words THEY get the gold and silver.

I have never made it past 2 hours at these auctions I don't have the patience for an all day wait to maybe get a single item.

Guess I'm the only one who keeps ordinary daily needs items (let alone great electronics items).

I have a friend who says the only thing he ever buys in a store, is underwear, toilet paper and food; everything else comes in lockers !  (may be an exaggeration, but a lot of good stuff can be used for yourself). Today I got two un-opened boxes of dishwashing detergent.

In 7 years I've only been interested in bidding on 3 lockers with vehicles and they all came out good...2 motorcyles and 1 quad. Details on these can be seen by searching for Honda Quad on these threads.

I have seen guys buy 60s models cars...most in the lowest stage of restoration. They got them for anywhere from $50 to $500 and more than one of them had problems in licensing. One of them had $600 in back dues for some reason....guess the former owner didn't put it on NON-OP.

Another fellow got a HUGE big rig cab for just $50 !  It cost him about $350 to have it towed somewhere and I haven't heard from him yet what  he finally did with it, and this was 2 years ago.

Here's a cut and paste for a California bay area auction.

Not a huge amount of stuff here. May sell it all as
ONE LOT, BUYER TAKES WHAT HE WANTS, LEAVES THE REST,
TWO HOURS TO REMOVE. MIGHT SELL IT IN SEVERAL LOTS,
WE'LL HAVE TO SEE HOW PEOPLE FEEL ABOUT IT ON AUCTION DAY...

Craigslist / Re: Maybe sellign smaller stuff on ebay isn't all bad...

Your thread title says eBay, but your contents suggest CL. ?????  ???

If you've waited more than 10 minutes for someone to come make a CL pickup, that's on you.

If you leave after that time and they later call you to ask what happened, just tell them the truth. They weren't there, they didn't call you to say they would be late, and you left.

If you pick a place just 5 minutes away from your home it's not a big deal.

One guy stood me up and then called me about 30 minutes after I got back home wondering where I was. I had him come to a place only 2 minutes from my house and he made the 2nd meeting and bought the item...in the dark...that was on him.

Yes, some site owners will take cards. Since you said in another post that you would only pay 1k or more for locker with great big ticket items, I don't think you're in danger of using up your 5k limit.

I believe the cards are becoming more popular (slowly) because the auctioneers may convice the property owners that bidders are more likely to bid higher if able to use a card...the same argument any retailer would use...ease, conveniene, pay later when bill comes due.

Working for a auctioneer, I can tell you why this is done...to try and save your voice...
if you have let's say 10 units and you have been doing auctions for years, you kinda
know what the unit will bring...you may start a $100 because the crowd also know what it's worth
and if you get a bite at $100 and it sells for $250...you don't have to "call" so far ie: "saving your voice"

It's easier on your "voice" to go from $100 to $250, than to start a $1.00 and still have to "call"
all the way to $250.....make sense now?

To a certain extent yes, and even the better auctioneers we have here will TRY to start an auction high and go from there, but to start a junker at $100 is different than starting a really good locker at $200. The regular buyers know what a locker might go for and will play along to a certain extent. You would have to see this woman in action to understand what a fruitcake she is. Beleive me she's not doing it to save her voice.

Only way I'll pay over a thousand for a locker is if it's something I know I can easily turn around like a car, motorcycle, trailer, arcade games, etc. Basically a few larger ticket items, not a whole unit full of stuff no matter how great.

You can't sell from empty shelves and a big locker with high quality furniture showing is a good sign the 20 totes will hold good stuff too. It's always a gamble of course based on what you can see usually, but sometimes going with a gut feeling will pay off....or not.

Well, I'll tell you what I see in my area.  Some guys have a van AND a box truck (like FedEx, UPS, bread delivery).
This way they can load depending on the need. Pricey to have more than one though.

Others use a pickup either by itself or with a trailer of some kind. One guy even has a horse trailer which he uses for big items.

Renting a truck can be about $20 a day but you have to pay for gas and some charge for mileage. I think it's in the 70 cents a mile area.

Some locker places will let you use their truck for free (plus gas) if you rent a locker from them. They usually put a 30 mile cap on it and will charge for mileage above that.

Once again, each person has to decide what will work for them. Buying a vehicle involves licensing, insurance etc.
If you have a car you can pull a trailer. You need somewehre to put it though.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Medical Equipment
« on: February 07, 2011, 07:41:36 AM »
I got a nice stainless steel autoclave once and managed to get it through eBay. Made a nice piece of change on that one. I don't know if it just slipped through or wasn't on the hit list.

I also just saw a guy buy maybe 6 cases of some medical fluid packed in plastic bags (maybe associated with dialysis)....expiration date right on outside of boxes was like 1 year old....hard to sell that !

Things like gauze, scissors, clamps would probably make it if nothing else by using the right wording, but sounds like your item won't fly on eBay.

Teacher...neat story. Your catching on about half way through was great!

One of the two I talked about did the door closing thing the first time I ran into her too. How stupid can you get. She could have had $25 (or whatever) AND  the locker cleaned out too. As I recall she held on to it until the next auction (6 months later?) and it sold in the $25 area. What an idiot.
