What's it Worth?? / Re: Been holding onto them for awhile now
« on: August 12, 2011, 10:09:18 PM »
A little update, still have not found out what I have. Done alot of researching and emailing people. Only had one person email me back, from an art museum, and unfortunately he does not specialize in Japanese art. However he did give me two more leads to go after. Just sent them the photos. So hopefully I will hear back from them by Tuesday.

Wow MovieMan, 1214 post...you have been busy.

How many post have you seen here where folks are "complaining" about "the Storage place" or "the Auctioneer" has/is committing Fraud  by moving stuff, show casing stuff, cherrypicking etc....????

I stop by everyday and read(don't post much though)....and I cannot recall a day where there is not a thread or reply stating this....or when I'm onsite, I hear it each and every day from bidders....so yea, for me "ALWAYS" applies

So keep on looking for them "red flags".....maybe that will keep you too busy to bust on another's reply

You have yourself a good day

Roger, I am not saying Movieman or you is right or wrong. However me myself looks at more units going up to be a good thing. However this may always change when I am actually there to see it. For the ones that are actually built by the management for various reasons that you have said, I usually do not bid on. When it is announced anyway, and sometimes the facilities are upfront with bidders (not all the time) letting them know that this unit is here because of this or that.

Let me chime in again here. I was not saying you must go gain the respect of your other bidders, and not piss them off. I was answering the question the OP asked.

I for one dont care who is bidding on a unit. If it is something I want I am going for it till I reach my cap for that particular locker. I lose some, I win some. But at end of day Im not losing money. And that is where it is key for me. And I know I pissed off a few vests. Just like I know I impressed a few as well.

Those that I have pissed off, eventually got over it. The ones I impressed also have given me a few tips on various subjects in this business.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Another source of Junk Silver
« on: August 10, 2011, 11:20:08 PM »
Depending on where you are the chance of silver from roll searches is rare.  My kids and I do roll searches all the time.  Am active on another forum that is other coin collectors and roll searchers.  One issue you will run into if get into roll searching is where to dump your coins.  Tellers will start to hate you if you bring in rolls and rolls of half-dollars and such.  So if you can find a coin-counting machine that takes halves and doesn't charge you if you are an account holder it's a good to do in your downtime.

One thing I've hated about the auction hunter show (not seen many storage wars) is they find silver coins and just chunk them.  They are like silver - cool that's XX spot value.  I'm like - well depending on the type / year and if an error that coin(s) could be worth way more then spot value.

For silver here are the dates you need to know:

Dollar - Eisenhower dollar coins - the 1971 - 76 S mint marks are 40% silver.   Peace & Morgan dollars are 90% silver and worth more then spot depending.

Half-dollar -- 1965 - 1970 is 40% silver            1964 and back is 90% silver

Quarter and dime - 1964 and older

Nickle - 1942 - 1945 are 35% silver

Now this is good to know, since I am not a collector had much dealings with coins. I know some are worth more depending on various things, just didnt know exactly what. So big thanks.

Well to be honest with you, I was not going to read it. I really dont like reading blogs to much. However I did enjoy the 4 articles I have thus far. Really good work! Rewarding, educational for the lot of noobs that come and think that it is just piles of gold or whatever they are thinking will be in their "JackPot" unit. Everything written very nicely. Hope you do more photos and articles on a complete dig through.

Cheers!

I live in a pretty ****ty neighborhood, its pretty ghetto, I'm the onlywhite guy on my block. I have had garage sales at previous places I lived and did well, all in nicer neighborhoods but people like going to those b/c nice neighorhoods tend to throw out nice and perfectly good stuff or sell it cheap at garage sales.

Just curious if anyone else lives in the ghetto and has garage sales. Im think I may be in a good area to sell a lot of stuff but really don't want all these people seeing all the stuff I got lol. I'm well armed and have a bulldog/pit mix but I'm not home all the time.

My living situation is temporary I'm going to either sell or rent the place and move on but stuck here for a few more months and dont want to let the summer pass me by without having a few garage sales.

Lol, did ya read my previous posts in other threads. Ya I live in the hood, and have yard sales. I wont say successful, alot of people wont come to my neirgborhood because of its reputation. And with this heat, well lets just say I am not using up gas to go back and forth from my inventory unit and my house for a garage sale. No one is coming outside right now.

I am exploring other options while selling the remainder of my inventory mostly on CL. Which almost all of it is gone. I may be donating the rest the stuff.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Children at Auctions
« on: August 09, 2011, 09:38:21 PM »
I think of kids bidding at auctions as being proxies for thier parents/grandparents so I am not gonna fall for that gimmick. If a kid is bidding on a small unit with toys and stuffed animals I'm not gonna be a scrooge and run them up, but if they are bidding on 10x20s, 10x30s full of furniture and boxes, then it's game on! I don't care how cute they are!

Of course there is always strategy #2, send in my own cute kids to bid against the other guys and gals cute kids. Could you imagine seeing that at auctions, hilarious!

That would be mine settiments, I also do not pay attention to who is bidding as much as I should, I just go for it till I hit my peak.

My biggest learning curve is going to be how to size up a unit in the 5 mins or less that you get to view it.
Takes time to value things in a matter of seconds

Figure it will not be till december or such that prices will settle down some.  I could be wrong, if the weather stays at 100+ the other looky loo's may stay home.

And everyone will be thinking the same thing, which means everyone will show, lol.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: A Noobie's Selling Conundrum
« on: August 09, 2011, 09:32:51 PM »
Put them on ebay with a reserve price (or better yet some other auction site). That way if it does not get the bite you were anticipating for, then you can still make your money with the dealer. I did it that way with an old payphone from the 50s. I ended up getting more money for it (even after shipping) selling on ebay (with reserve) then I would have gotten from the 3 various collectors/dealers in my area.

I disagree with that. Are you telling me that you wouldn't spend a grand on a locker if you know you could make a quick $400 profit?

If I knew for a fact what I was looking at was an easy quick $400 profit sale (this is with all the other fees we end up paying, trash, gas, etc). Then ya I would do it.

Mmmmm, how to get a locker and not piss off your competitor, either noob crowds or vets. Near impossible. This is a double edged sword. To much or to little of either can make your competitors mad or rather not respect you. This is something that is earned over time.

On the show they seem to go with the experts "estimated" price.  Estimated and actual price at sale can be a huge difference.

More like estimated Retail value, and not RESELL value, those two number are always far from each other.

Well I'll be honest and admit I'm a hobbiest.  I've not even purchased my first unit yet.  Still doing my research and learning the trade...is how I found this site.  Also still working on my seed money, $300 down and growing.  I'm new to storage units but not to auctions.  Father and I go to a dozen or so auctions each year.  Mostly estate and equipment type auctions.

One issue I have is how easy the shows make it look.  While I love Auction Hunters for the entertainment factor I do prefer Storage Wars due to them showing the good and the bad.

As for my strategy to sell items I'll do like I've done in the past.  Mostly Flea bay and craigslist.  I will also prob hit up my sister-in-law for the smalls that I can't sell easily.  She is unemployed and doing lots of avon, yard sales, etc.  Figure offer her .25 or .50 cents on the dollar to sale my items on saturday to leave me free to do stuff w/ kids, etc.

While I'm close to Atlanta I figure I may stay away from the area.  Considering all the other newbies and professionals alike out bidding on units.

Well let me be the first to reply, this business is nothing like either one of those shows. 99.99% of storage auction goers are not that lucky to get those type of things you see on both of the shows. You have to take everything in the locker you bought, consequences can range from no deposit back, cant go back to THAT facility or CHAIN of that facility and bid on a unit, cant go to any of the facilities that the AUCTIONEER will be auctioning  at. This list goes on and on, but to me these are the two most things that stick right out the most.
