They should have a 2hour special behind the scenes and show the business from buying to selling.

I would watch that!
Its because they dont know how to. Its a tv show not a true reality show. Guess they could act it out?

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Finding jewelry in a unit
« on: March 01, 2012, 09:55:08 AM »
Most everything I've got I've sold intact or scrap with stones in.
Most that had real diamonds, the diamonds were very low grade.
Could do the above and save them up but I don't get enough to make it worth my time.

And I've gotten a lot of pieces that are 10-18k gold with synthetic diamonds.
Gem tester is still on my to-get list.
Why buy a tester when you can get it tested for free at any pawnshop or jewel store?

Just as I was thinking with no new episodes and most people have blown their tax money prices may start to drop.  Maybe it will be a good thing if I can't hit the auctions up due to this new boss.

I'll have to try and remember to watch it this Sunday.  Think I caught all of them from last season.  Got to the point I couldn't really stand to watch them except when kids wanted me to watch it with them.  If I could get $30 per black trash bag w/o looking even in it I could go on vacation this summer.
I will be watching the amazing race then catch a rerun or two later. 3rd season its the same old stuff ! The novelty has worn off. They find cloths, tools, cars and house old items. They sell and do it all over again. Guess I could try and watch the show in mute that cuts out all the drama which is what 90% of what the show has become.

Not sure if this topic has come up but someone had an intersting thread about do you care who wins a unit and talked about a "whale".

Anyhow, do you think there's an unspoken rule or etiquete about if someone's taken half the days units they should call it a day and go home or is it more this is business every man for himself and may the best man win?

I suppose this question is more suited towards the circuit type auctiosn where everyone is spending the day following one auctioneer around rather than just bouncing around to random auctions.

Part of me says yes extend a little courtesy to your fellow buyers but I can also see the argument if someone has the money and can get rid of that volume more power to them. If they suck they will run out of money soon enough and if they are that good they deserve to win and take all the units

I will say that when I see this on a circuit where everyone is following all day and everyone knows one particular guy has gotten 12 of the 15 units or something like that everyone groans when he bids and you start to see the whole auction following as a whole start running that person up.

Just curious your guys thoughts
That the risk you take? If a person has the money buy what you want . If you buy them all thats the way it goes.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Returning personal items
« on: March 01, 2012, 09:43:28 AM »
So I just got done going through everything out of the unit we bought.  Its a given that I am going to return all the pictures (ended up being a large suitcase, and 5 boxes full), college degrees, baby books, etc.

Here is my dilemma: How much do you really need to give back? I went through about 30 boxes of personal crap. These boxes looked as though they were damaged in a basement and then taken to storage. All the boxes were junk (and the smell was horrendous).  This lady had this storage locker since 2002. She relinquished the locker to the storage facility. conditions were pictures, personal items and some ceramic tree be returned. Found the tree (of course broken because it was just thrown into the locker, found it in the back under a bunch of crap) but it will be returned.

Personal items included all of her kids homework, artwork, etc. Mostly ruined. Receipts dating back to 1990.  I am going to burn all papers that have any SS#, and real personal info.  If I return ALL of the personal item, I pretty much paid for her back rent, cleaned out the locker and put all her crap in new boxes. To me, that is too much. I would need the truck to take it all back. The storage manager is pissed that the owner agreed to give back anything at all as the woman hasn't been in there in at least 2-3 years.

I think after all is said and done we will at least break even. Of course all those water damaged, disgusting boxes were first in the locker, so no way to see them on bidding. That's the chance you take.

There are taxes and stuff in there, ruined and stinking...but none later than 2001. So its beyond the 7 years you need to keep something. I think if the stuff meant that much, she wouldve come up with the money to get it out.

Am I wrong about not returning EVERYTHING personal? Most of the photo albums are junk because of water damage, but I am still returning them and the broken tree  ???

Why return?arent we all buying Abandoned storage units? You mean some people are exploiting off of others  mis fourntune. So why return if they have no idea due to  abandonment .

Storage Auctioneers / Re: charging admission ????

This is an ad from St. Louis auctioneer:       UPCOMING STORAGE SALE SCHEDULE

**NOTE** These numbers are very likely to change before sale times....For those of you who do not understand how this works , the tenants have right up until the time that the sale starts to come in and pay off their delinquent balances, so that locker would not be sold as advertised.

**NEW POLICY- Effective 1-25-12 ALL FACILITIES - Due to the ever increasing crowds showing up at storage auctions, there will be a $5.00 per person  ( that means every wife, child & friend) , not per buyer cover charge at each location, refundable with purchase. This money goes to the facility.

We are experiencing a large number of people that are there with no intention of buying lockers, bringing their children, which increases our time selling each unit.

All of our time is valuable. Where it was 5-10 minutes to show & sell a locker, it's now taking 20-25 minutes, and it's costing storage facilities several hours at each location from start to finish doing paperwork. **

WE STILL WELCOME EVERYONE TO ATTEND

I think this is a good idea but need a better idea so serious buyer arent affected! Maybe have a big screen in the lobby for the people that are starving for entertainment can watch or play reuns of storage bors?

I was browsing an antique mall over the weekend and saw a display case with a few zippos. I own about a dozen, so i was curious about what they had.

They had a new in box Zippo from 1973 from a national boy scout convention. The fact that lighters were part of a boy scout event just shows how much things have changed.

That is one problem with tobacco items, though. As smoking becomes less popular, so do the related "collectables."
Same with collectable cars! As with battery run cars becoming more and more the trend  so do the related collectables ::). Yes the lighters will be collectables!!
