Flea Markets / Re: Anyone in the Athens Ga area?
« on: March 21, 2012, 08:12:15 AM »
We may have one guy from the Athens area.  Not seen him around a bit.  UGA is up north of Atlanta if memory serves me.  Most people from GA are in/near Atlanta.  I'm about an hour and half or so drive away from Athens.

I only get $2-3 bucks for older system games.  So the price would have to be really great to be worth time/effort/gas.

I buy mostly non-working computers ($2-5) to recycle / fix.

If you have an inventory list, pictures, what you asking for, shoot me a PM.

Last night shows you how fake the shows are.  I think it was the pipe-tomahawk that was a commercial mass produced item - retial $150.  So they say he made $150 + the $40 he made from the newbie selling the locker he paid $30 for.

Then the unit with the washer, dryer, few other items that Rob paid $225 for they claim a $200 loss.  Made $25 for the old medal.  I was like if the washer/dryer worked could get 150 - 200 for the set since was an older model it looked like.  The medal I would try for the $25 just due to age but don't count on a quick sale.

Now I remember why I wasn't watching the show.

It was a roll of the dice and I lost  :(  The grill is one of those grill/cooler combos that came out a few years back.  Looked inside the cooler and it's trash.  Not sure if can sell the grill by itself as a "tailgate" grill or not.  Need to check it out still.  Tote only had hangers in it.  Other box is mostly ratty pillows and some personals.  Big ticket item will be the breadmaker if it works.  Then a few smalls and some scrap metal.  So figure a loss or break-even once finish testing and selling.  No biggie - even the walmart giftcard came up empty.

Today's auction saw even more people out and about.  Units today to me were poor.  Only two units interested me.  First had a 3-gallon and a 1-gallon air compressors in it and body parts of some car + seats.  I bid up to 50 max and it sold for like 180.  Can buy both of those size compressors new at Walmart for less then that.  Other unit I was interested in had lots of cloths, a window AC unit, and what looked like a old shiftrobe / chrio cabinet?  Back was turned to us.  This one went for just stupid money ($510).  Two newbies got in a bidding war.  All the regulars just sat back and shook our heads.  Last unit was a bigger unit with washer, dryer, furniture, etc.  I didn't stick around as needed to get back to work.

Flea Markets / Military Post Flea Market
« on: March 20, 2012, 06:35:22 AM »
Has anyone tried the semi-annual flea market that most military post have each spring / fall?  Just saw advertisement for the one near me.  Cost is much higher then normal flea but I wonder if traffic is higher also.  10x10 spot, corner spot is $55, outside drive-up and park $45 (one I'd get), and inside isle spot is $30.

I remember doing this one year when I was young and father was in the army.  So I know the crowds can be large.  Plus it's the first weekend of the month - so military will be paid.

Well today was my 3 facility late afternoon auction.  Only 6, 2, 4 units this month.  Crowd was pretty big again (30-50 people) but just about the same "bidders".  Units were priced a little better then what is "normal".  I picked up a gamble unit for $50.  Could of had it at $5 but a newbie jumped in to $10, so I jumped to $20, him $25 and then me to $50.  Has a grill, junk cooler, 2 boxes, and 2 totes (1 looked like cloths).  Just wanted to see what all would find so rolling the dice.

Buddy got a good tool unit for $310.

We had the same type of forcast, but it did rain that morning.  Rest of day was nice Sunday.  I took a break from flea to get house work done.  Next weekend is the flea again for me.  Same type forcast however as this weekend.  Mid 80s with a 30% chance of T-storms.

$48 isn't much but better then nothing.  Just sucks you spent how many hours out there selling.  Not counting the packing/un-packing.  Better luck this weekend Shmoopy.

That is great Fred.  I don't find much re-sell stuff in trash/dumpsters but I do scrap a bunch from it.  I check every dumpster when at the auctions.  Is amazing what you can find if someone just cleaned out their unit or was moving and couldn't take it all.

Lol StorMe - think I'd like your dad.  Reminds me of an old gentleman that taught me a bunch of stuff when I was a kid.

On the profile thing - I mark my prices so they are pretty set for 80% of my items.  The few I don't have set I normally start high and then go lower if it's not selling.  As money said the profile of shoppers is about how they shop.  I use the profile more to determine what to take/layout at the table then the prices.

Also - in my area 70% of the units I buy have been black families.  So I need that ethnic group to show up at my table to sell select items.  Those items may sell to other ethnic people but chances of it are low.  So if it's a Sunday and I normally see white/hispanic people those items stay in the totes and others are displayed.  Now if I still have room left (never) or I sell a bunch of inventory - everything else in the totes come out just in case.

I actually enjoy the hagglers more then regular shoppers.  I've sold stuff for a buck or two less then what really wanted just cuz of the fact was haven a good time doing it.  That and barter/trade - I love doing that at the flea also with other vendors.

Nice Alias - I'm like Rockin and do it by hand.  Have the new puncture marks to prove it.  Was testing out a new way to strip degause cable.  Did really well till I bobbled and dropped the knife.  BTW - hook blades work well for stripping.  Better then the straight blades I'm finding.

I talked to him back in January about the show.  He said he HATED it and the shows.  Due to the increase in crowds, he now has to take longer to do 1 facility and can only do 2 or 3 a day.  Before he said he could do 4 or 5 facilities.  So while he may be getting more per unit he is spending 2 and 3x as long.

Your right Cheesehead - those CDs are worthless to anyone but person named on certificate.  You would need a certificate of death, and few other legal documents to get anything out of those CDs.

Hey Rockin - do you have a setup to strip the wire or you just do it by hand?

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Site for selling books
« on: March 18, 2012, 04:16:20 PM »
Well I checked it out and is about what I expected.  They offer very low prices for books you "may" be able to sell on half.com.  The upside is you know you have a buyer and get paid in a decent timeframe it looks like.  Downside is you don't get as much money as if you try half.com or such site.

Mass market paperbacks that I tried they are not buying.  About what I expected on that.

So I would suggest you try half.com for a few weeks if have room, and then sell to them if all else fails.

Example book (The Braves Encyclopedia) - Half.com lowest price is $8.00 -- so say try and sell at $7.50
The website is offering $2.75 for the same book.

Well I was wrong on the weight of this thing - is worth $57 bucks.  Finally broke down and bought a 3lb postal weight scale.  Still need to get a 50lb or larger one.

Today was a good day.  Did another Goodwill run, have a freaking ton of pants and few other cloths items to sale, and sold my 10k ring for $129 on ebay.  So that was $107 pure profit.  So can't wait for the auctions next week.  Hope to find some new surprises.

Oh and I check under the flaps of boxes, in pants pockets, etc.  Is a pain sometimes but has paid off in small ways before.  Is why when I get tired of cloths I just toss them up under the sort table for later.

Thats what you get for being down in Florida, Money.  As for profileing - think I talked about that in another post somewhere on the boards.  Maybe it was about the haggle.  I agree with most everything Cobia said on the mix.  In my area I see normally the following:

White - Older - 15% or so -- will haggle
White - Young to mid - 20% -- buy w/o second thought
Black - Older - 10% -- some haggle, others just buy
Black - Young to mid - 30% -- most just buy (CDs, what I call pimp shoes, etc.)
Hispanic (old or young) - 20% -- 90% of them haggle, have a few that don't but normally on $5 or less items
Oriental / Indian - 5% -- haggle,  I semi-hate this group as they want to haggle quarter items and one old lady that acts like she don't understand English is a thief you have to watch.

Saturday I get more black/hispanic customers.  On sunday it's mostly white / hispanic with very few black.  Most of the black churches don't get out till like 2 or 3pm and flea closes at 4.
