General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Hybrid auction/picking/storage??
« on: September 03, 2013, 04:29:43 PM »
Closest barn auction to me is about an hour drive away, which isn't terrible.. but it's Saturdays starting at 7. My store closes at 7. No way to get there. I've been buying a lot on auctionzip's online auctions though. Some barn auction type places have their items listed on there. Did okay with smalls on there. Bought 3 really cool circus posters from there last week for $5 ea. I'm asking $35-$125 ea.

$100 is a hell of a deal! I don't blame you for taking them up on that offer to move the whole unit!

I've had select pieces up on craigslist. In fact, I do now.. (linked below)

I pick out clothes that look nice, group them together and price the same for all pieces.

Links no longer active.

Not a single bite!

I have not fallen to one of these scams. I will accept all forms of payment locally, but I will not ship off of craigslist. If someone wants me to ship from craigslist, the most I will do is post it to ebay and send them the link to the buy it now listing. When I do that, I typically don't hear from them again.

Wow.. not many people use professional movers because the cost is outrageous! If I used a professional mover, I'd have to factor in like $200 into my bidding budget, which prices me out of the action.

Craigslist / Using Craigslist services section for labor
« on: September 03, 2013, 12:37:20 PM »
How many of us use craigslist services section for manual labor? I have had to use it once because I bought a locker with an elliptical machine I couldn't move on my own, nor fit in my van. Hired a guy with a truck and we got it loaded up and moved. He charged me $25, we brought it straight to Play It Again sports (used sporting goods store) and sold it for $300. Best $25 I ever spent!

Ever use hired help through craigslist for bigger jobs? Use "rent a guy with a truck" services for smaller one or 2 piece specialty moves? Got a tip for sourcing these types of services?

I love the ads that say "OMG I loved your ad! Can you respond to my personal email [email protected]?" I wonder how many suckers they get with that?

Craigslist free around here is tough. You have to be a vulture swirling around the site waiting for updates and email as soon as you can. I had an app on my phone, and it alerts me when the free section has new listings. I don't get the alert quick enough to respond first. It's tough to get the nicer stuff that's free. Where I would start is bikes. Buy a bike for $10, put $20 in repairs in, flip for $60-$200. It's low up front, the reward doubles your investment at least. Than move up to bigger stuff like appliances, etc.

Contacts are important to maintain. I have a few. I have a guy that I can bring bedroom furniture to, he owns a mattress store and uses clean, newer furniture as displays, sells them out too. It's more of a consignment thing.. But he only charges 20%. Have another guy for vintage guitars. Another for sound equipment. The rest I take care of. I only really sell to my contacts if I have a tough time moving it though, or if I come across a room that's a major focus of one of my guys.

Craigslist / What Time Of Day Works Best?
« on: September 02, 2013, 04:43:55 PM »
I try to stagger my craigslist ad renewals and it seems that late afternoon seems to work the best for quick responses, but it really depends on the item.

For me, baby stuff responds faster in the late morning/early afternoon.. Most everything else is late afternoon/evening. Any different where you are?

I've never worried about it. But I do know a lady who does auctions who is a former police officer.. She keeps her money locked in her car until pay up time.

Craigslist / Re: Selling Smalls On Craigslist
« on: September 02, 2013, 04:28:44 PM »
This is just my personal opinion, and how I attack craigslist. Anything that you wouldnt sell for at least $20 dollars is not worth putting on craigslist. I dont think its so much the item (in reference to "smalls or bigs") as it is the value. People use craigslist to feel like there getting a good deal. Why would you drive anywhere else but Dollar General to buy a $10 blender as opposed to a $5 one.

I can understand that.. and you make a great point! The cheap household items would be a tough push on craigslist.. But what about collectibles? Like old bottles, sports collectibles, etc? Have any luck with those? I have a bunch of that stuff and even if it's not collectible, one of a kind items like hand painted Angry Birds canvases.. Nothing seems to be biting on that level either..

Stores / Re: Thrift Store Going Out Of Business
« on: September 02, 2013, 02:10:26 PM »
100% agree! I've owned businesses for a while now. I owned a cell phone store, the printing biz is still running and I have a thrift store. If I didn't have my print biz, I'd be out of biz with the thrift store. In fact, I wouldn't have even opened the store. I was doing fine with selling my auction stuff on the side, craigslist, flea market, etc. I opened the store, because it gives me a quiet environment to do business through my printing company, a 7 day a week chance to make a sale, and a public meeting place for my craigslist sales. My printing biz is paying the rent at home, the store does enough to hold itself up and refund my auction budget, but I'm not making money from it yet. Of course, I'd like to do that sooner than later, but I'm in a position where I don't have to worry about where my next rent check is coming from (yet).

I haven't had to ask family or friends for funds to open the store or keep it floating, but I work very hard at keeping a couple of people coming in a day and selling through craigslist, ebay, amazon, yadda yadda..

Yeah, I'm just looking around my shop and the stuff on the floor is getting stale.. Items like glassware, dish sets, Pyrex.. I'm priced competitively, just don't get enough traffic through to move it. We've already decided to go to the flea market 1-2 times a month and bring this kind of stuff.. We should unload a bunch and generate some more word of mouth about the shop. But, for October, the flea market shuts down for the state fair (the flea market's on the state fairgrounds)

Craigslist / Selling Smalls On Craigslist
« on: September 02, 2013, 12:29:44 PM »
Craigslist is a great place to sell your large pieces, like furniture, cars, large decor, etc. Or for niche stuff like baby stuff, toys, etc. But what about selling smalls like collectibles, small kitchen accessories, glassware, etc.? I haven't had much luck selling that kind of stuff.. Stuff that goes for under $10-$15..

One thing I'm thinking of doing is combining items... Like all small kitchenware in one ad for 1 price. What do you do to sell your smalls on craigslist?
