Just as I was thinking with no new episodes and most people have blown their tax money prices may start to drop.  Maybe it will be a good thing if I can't hit the auctions up due to this new boss.

I'll have to try and remember to watch it this Sunday.  Think I caught all of them from last season.  Got to the point I couldn't really stand to watch them except when kids wanted me to watch it with them.  If I could get $30 per black trash bag w/o looking even in it I could go on vacation this summer.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #2...February, 2012

Went to one close to home today that I had heard iffy things about.  Rumor is the facility manager has been fired from 2 other places and has her own thrift store in town.  Is said she goes into the units.  At 11am she had all 4 units (very rude on phone).  By 2pm for the auction she was down to 2.  The tool/tote unit paid up along with the other good on paper unit, go figure?  Locks on the units are also these special key locks that you have to get from the facility.  Friend of mine won both units.  First was $35 and had junk couch / recliner, but nice corner cabinet, mirror, and large display type case.  Second unit looked pretty old and was bit of a mystery - sold for $195.  Found some good stuff in the unit along with some so/so stuff.  Should be able to break even or make money.

Crowd was about a dozen people.  Very good compared to last few auctions.  No auctions again for me till the 9th.  Then start the 2 week frenzy again.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Returning personal items
« on: February 28, 2012, 08:15:45 AM »
There is nothing saying they have to return personals.  Most places do it as a "good will" gesture.  I think most of these places toss the boxes we return after a month or so.  Many times the person moved and didn't leave a forwarding address or such.  Why their unit goes up for auction.

I have had 1 person that I know of contact the facility about getting back personal items.  Facility manager called me about 1 item that I had already tossed or sold.  I had previously taken back a box full of pictures, baby books, etc.

It all is up to each individual and company to determine what is right.  In the case of this facility I wouldn't go looking for the owners.  Just opens you up to a bunch of stress.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Finding jewelry in a unit
« on: February 28, 2012, 08:07:22 AM »
I just recently found my 1st gold ring.  It is only a 10k ring with little spec diamonds in it.  What I plan to do is take it to my local jewelry place to get a free verbal appraisal and clean.  Then I'll list it up on ebay for sale.  Should be able to get more for it as a cheap ring for a gf then in scrap value.  IMO scrap is the last option.

Good luck Rockin.  This month has been good to me so I can't complain too much except about the crowds.  Hope you score a nice unit.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Community yard sales ?????
« on: February 27, 2012, 08:22:03 AM »
If they have it every month it may not be a "big" affair.  In my county they have a "county yard sale" at the fair grounds once or twice a year.  Normally that draws a large crowd since it's pretty big and is a rare event.

Large chruch yard sales and the like do ok as they draw the yard sale crowd first.  When you can hit 3-5 family yard sales in one location beats hitting 3-5 in seperate locations.

With gas prices going up even higher I suspect many of the group yardsales will get hit first/hardest by buyers in the future.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Firearms?
« on: February 27, 2012, 08:17:55 AM »
Myself - I would keep any guns that I find.

If did want to sell them I would put them in one of the local sell trade papers.  Before ebay and CL - we had the iwantta.  It is a trade magazine that is nothing but classified ads.  As an individual you can put in 2 free ads a week.  Cost to buy the magainze use to be $1 but is up to $1.75.  Can list anything and everything.

If you have pistols look for shooting ranges / gun clubs in your area.  Local newpapers may allow you to post a ad but those are iffy.

My local flea you can't sell weapons except pocket knifes.  Ammo clips, ammo, etc. is fine but no firearms.  As other's have said some flea markets allow you to.

If he is wanting to accept paypal and wants to ship he should just add 18% to what he wants to sell and use ebay.  This would give him more exposure.

Shipping via CL for buyer and seller is just asking for trouble.  Both can get scammed.  It wouldn't surprise me if one person saw his ads and purchased everything with paypal and then put in a complaint saying the items were not as described, broken, etc. and got their money back.

For myself, and my area it is a bit of a mix.  We have 3 people / whales that may have the pockets to buy most of the units we see.  They like large units with lots of furniture and things.  Mostly it is the 3 of them going head to head on these units.  If we have less then 5 units it's more of a free-for-all.  If we have a dozen or more units things start to get parsed out so to speak.  If the whales have already bought 3-4 units they will back off on each other and the rest of the regulars.  We sort of all do that to a degree.  Most of the dozen regulars we have all have certain niche units we like.  So while we bid on each other if we all already have a unit or two for the day we don't bid as agressively I would say.

Now - for the newbies that come in.  That is a different story.  We don't hold a grudge if a guy wins a unit or two as normally the price is way higher then any of us want to pay.  However, when a new guy comes in and starts to bid/win every unit the field changes.  We had this happen last monday.  3 facility caravan with a large number of units (18 / 6 / 16).  First unit is open, nothing great, sells to new guy in yellow shirt.  Second unit, again to yellow shirt.  Third unit - he keeps bidding but looses to another newbie.  Fourth unit he bids and wins against a regular.  So he has set the pattern of bidding on every unit.  So from then on he got run up.  He bought 5 units total at the first facility.  He didn't show up at the 2nd or 3rd place.  Makes me wonder if he even paid as you pay for the 1st facility at the 2nd (main hq).

Now if there is (very RARE) only 4-5 of us and 10+ units we sort of make sure everyone walks away with at least one unit.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Newb gets a great unit!
« on: February 27, 2012, 07:43:15 AM »
That sounds like a great unit - congrats.  If the various items are new you may want to look at doing ebay vs a yard sale.  Yard sale people are looking for good/decent quality at the CHEAP.  So instead of $10-$20 for an item they will only want to pay $1-$2.  So the crystal and such needs to be on CL, a consignment store, or ebay.

Good luck.

I have a few of those little velvet boxes.  Even found a large Zales necklace box that had the sales receipt in it.  So I knew how much the necklace that USE to be in there cost.

Did find my first 10k gold ring finally in the most unlikely unit / place.  Found it in a man unit on the floor next to a shoe I was about to pick up.  Only worth 20-30 bucks but still a nice find for a $90 unit.  Where as the female unit that my daughter picked out has only resulted in costume jewelry and one .925 italy sterling silver gold color bracelet.

Flea Markets / Re: Flea Sales 02/24/2012
« on: February 25, 2012, 07:02:46 AM »
Well that is about an avg day for me at the flea Money.  Lowest day was $76, with the highest being $130 in the 5 times I've gone out to sell.  Like you I'm still working to learn what sells at my flea.  Some days it's the movie/games, and other days old world coins.

Next weekend I'll be out of town with the kids competetion.  I'm planning to hit the flea on the 10th.  I may head to the other one 2 miles from the big one.  Is little smaller but $5 a spot instead of $12.  Talking with people they say a good 80% of people that hit one comes down to the other.  Those I suspect may be more willing to buy.  Get a ton of "walkers" at the first flea.

One of the units I bought this month (bags of cloths) turned out to be 4 bags of kids (infant - toddler) sidze cloths.  So I'm going to take them, all my jeans, selection of books and put them all out on one spot.  Then my normal flea setup in the other spot.  See how that works.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: whats (one) the most useful tool u have?
« on: February 25, 2012, 06:51:24 AM »
My Avalanche  -  used to power my phone, laptop, kindle.  Used to haul loads from the unit and out to the flea.  Storage space for all the other tools of the trade (duct tape, trash bags, broom & dust pan, etc.).

Least your finding some gold Movieman.  I just keep getting the gold plated rings, fake avon jewelry, or a small gold color sterling silver necklace out of my last unit.  I know most of the rings / necklace will sell for a few bucks at the flea.  No idea what to do with earrings - they don't sell.

Was going to hit Savannah today with 3 large auctions but that got canceled on me by the wife and mother.  Each of them have things for me to do/help with today starting with taking my girls to ice skating practice.  Oh well - hope to hit a few auctions next week before get moved and transfered to the new boss.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Car Title in Storage Unit
« on: February 24, 2012, 10:24:16 AM »
I'm not sure about storage places.  With car repair places they have to jump some legal hurdles before they can auction the cars off.  I would think the storage place would have the same or simular issues.

With the title it could be he can then sell the car as a vehicle instead of the car as "parts only / no title".  Salvaged titles bring in less money then the original IMO.
