The flea market at the state fairgrounds here is busy year round. It doesn't slow down because of the hot summer temps. Although, the vendors don't typically stay as late in the day in the summer.

From what I got from the report was this was kind of the last straw for her. When they showed her youtube clip complaining about her pay, I was shocked they didn't let her go then.

Garage Sales / Re: Top 10 Reasons Garage Sales Fail
« on: July 30, 2013, 03:54:51 PM »
I think poor advertising is tops on the list. But some other reasons why they fail could be..

Poor setup (presentation)
Bad location (narrow streets, no parking)
Bad mix of products (too many smalls/bigs)
Poor quality (sometimes crap is crap)
Quirky hours (one guy locally did a yard sale from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Sunday)
Bad attitude (it's a yard sale, you should expect to haggle. Don't be a jerk!)

The Lounge / Re: How do you feel about Obama Care
« on: July 29, 2013, 08:30:20 AM »
As a business owner I can honestly say you have no clue as to what you're talking about.

As a business owner myself, I can tell you that a majority of this country considers Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and other pundits (John Stewart, Rachel Maddow) actual news. We've lost sight of what news commentaries or editorials are. It's been tough, because these people, with the exception of John Stewart, purport themselves as actual news.. and when they report things wrong they run behind their "entertainment" badge. They know that they influence people in the country including and especially politicians.

So when they say,  "The government plan is so expensive, it adds $1.79 per hour to the cost of a full-time employee." - Rush Limbaugh 11/2012, that's really frightening to all business owners, me included. $3723.20 per employee, per year, the day the plan goes into effect. Just taking this statement at face value.

But let's look at how it really works...

If employers who employ over 50 people decide to provide a low cost health insurance option for their employees, they pay nothing. No tax, no demands to pay portions of the cost of the health care. They just have to "offer" it. Of course, if the business decides to pay a portion of the cost, they would incur that charge. But it's totally up to the business to decide whether that makes sense for the business.

If an employer who employs over 50 people decides AGAINST providing a low cost health insurance option for their employees, they would incur a tax penalty of $2000 per employee, or .97/hour for a full time employee. A far cry from the $3723.20/$1.79. IF that employee decides to get health insurance on their own, because their employee does not offer anything, there is supposed to be a system in place (the reason for this 1 year delay) for the government to tax an additional $1000 for that specific employee. So an employer could see a tax burden of up to $3000/year per employee who purchases health insurance, only when their company does not offer it.

If an employee decides to purchase health insurance because they don't like their employer's options, or for whatever reason, but the employer DOES offer insurance; that employer pays nothing.

Small businesses who employ less than 25 people could actually earn a tax credit for offering insurance. The tax credit, I assume is to offset any cost to pay a portion of the cost for the employee. But I don't see anything that states that any employer MUST pay a portion of the insurance cost. They just have to OFFER it.

Pundits rely on fear to continue to bring the ratings in. They want to keep you afraid and mad so that they can pretend to be mad with you and offer "facts and solutions" to problems that really don't exist, in most cases. They rip apart statements, take them out of context, to prove a point. They provide commentary, opinions, very little facts and call it "news".

I really think it's a stepping stone to universal health care and something that this country needs to do to reign in the ridiculous costs of health care. I believe that employers are being sold a bag of terrified goods by the likes of Fox News and others (Rush Limbaugh, etc.) The costs to business owners should not be that extensive, if they do what they're supposed to. The problem is, these major corporations and medium sized businesses (who aim to be large corporations) are only focused on the dollar and not on the person behind it.

I'm not shocked to see this story. It's typical of a Fox News affiliate to report on something that hit its peak a year ago..

Craigslist / Re: Texting late at night.

Personally I think it's smart to put your number on cl. People will email offers and say they want stuff all day through email and not show up, however someone who is going to pick up the phone is a much more serious buyer. You cut out 90% of the bs dealing over phone and not email. Many people completely take away the option of contacting via email and only post a phone number. Also, if you dont want to give out your personal number download one of those free text call apps they give you a fake number you can take or receive calls on or take or rec texts on

To me, it doesn't matter if the phone number is fake, or temporary, while I have the number my phone is going to ring. I'd rather not be bombarded by telemarketers, prank calls, etc.

Craigslist / Re: You know what I hate most about Craigslist?
« on: July 26, 2013, 08:41:48 AM »
I don't seem to have that problem (people not showing up when they say they will). Since renting my store, I don't go anywhere to meet people, they come to me. If they don't come, it goes back out on the floor, or it gets retagged. If I have multiple interested, I just move onto the next person. I'm just starting out on ebay (again), and I think it is much harder for a noob to sell on ebay than it is for an established seller. I've listed more products that didn't sell than ones that did. I'd much rather just stick with craigslist, however certain items just do not sell on there, in my area. Items like collectibles, fine china, and small antiquey type items don't move on craigslist, around here.

Craigslist / Re: Providing Dimensions

I've been getting lazy with it, but now that I've got some more furniture pieces up there, I'm noticing that I'm getting tons of emails asking for dimensions. Gotta get back into the habit of doing that again.

Friend of mine bought an 82 Winnebago at an auction and had to scrap it. He got $600. It was a big one too!

Depends on the size of the RV. I'd say from $400-$600 scrap.

We all know that there are elements of these shows that are put on, or embellished for ratings. Reality TV has really become the most unreal parts of our society. Nobody wants to see real, reality because that would be boring. Imagine if a TV crew were following your auctions in your area. Nobody would watch it! They want the drama that guys like Big Steve brings to the NY show, or whatever form of sex appeal that the girls bring to any of the shows. You know how big of a sex symbol Brandi has become? It's huge how much sex sells TV shows.

Her face is dog ugly and that gap between her teeth looks like a girl only a truck driver could love. YUCKKKKKKKKKK

There's someone out there for everybody. I'm not dogging her looks because I try not to get into subjective arguments. What's pretty to you probably is not to me. However, something objective, like her boobs saying "hey" out of the top of her shirt.. Now there's something to discuss!

The Lounge / Re: Baby born in London
« on: July 24, 2013, 02:22:19 PM »
That's an amusing cover. I don't get the hype over the birth. I understand it's an heir to the throne. However, how relevant is the throne? It's not since they became a democracy. Now the Cambridge family (the real last name of the royal family) is just England's most rich and famous family. The things that keeps the throne alive is history and tradition. Tradition will be broken eventually, and history.. well, it's good for books..

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: My cheapest unit yet.

Judging the pics, I'd say you're about at a break even depending on what avenues you have to sell. At a flea market, or on craigslist, these pieces MAY go for $600-$700 in a best case scenario. Looking at that first pic, that parlor bench needs a full restoration, assuming the chair is in the same situation, it's going to cost you about what you'll garner for the set. You may be better off flipping it for a quick $150-$200 to someone looking for a restore project to keep.

Of course, more information would be excellent. I'm thinking the 2 pieces are from the 40s-50s. Restored, it'll be a fantastic set! It looks like the wood is in decent shape, and like Alias said, don't do anything until you know what it is! If you get the upholstery done, work on the structure and leave the wood distressed, you'll be in a safe position to sell and not damage or devalue the furniture.
