Donations & Taxes / Re: Goodwill Prices
« on: March 28, 2013, 02:33:24 PM »
I don't now but seems Value Village sells the donations they get at the store they were donated to.

Go to VV stores in good neighborhoods and get quality stuff, poor area's have junk.....

The one by my house gets SO much stuff it's marked pretty low.   Another one not far way is in a not so nice part of town and not as much stuff and pricy!

One thing I noticed they all do now is split things up.
Want a lamp?  Lamp shade is separate.
Mixer?  Bowls are over there, priced separate.  Blades are on wall, priced separate.

Really adds up if you want to buy a complete unit......

Donations & Taxes / Goodwill Prices
« on: March 27, 2013, 10:03:06 PM »
Was on the Eastside today.  It's known for being a little more well off.  Stopped by Goodwill with the thinking that the donations might be a little higher end.

Wrong.

I do know goodwill sets up stores to be a certin kind.  Send furniture here, clothing there.....
We even have one that is all name brand clothing.

This was junk.

Few good items were priced SO high.   Old wash ringer was $75, broken.  See them at antique shops for that.  Working, cleaned and mounted.

Old chair that I thought I could get $100 for?  They wanted $200.  Redone and cleaned up it might go for $200-$250.

They were even asking $29.99 for a used deep fryer that I own the same one and got on sale at Target for $19.99!!  In fact all the small appliances were almost retail.

Fake Coach wallet was $29.99.    I got my sister the REAL one like it for $45 the outlet store two xmas's ago.

All the sofa's were $150-$200 and trashed.

I'm sticking to Value Village and Salvation Army.   They price to move inventory.
Goodwill puts all the good stuff on eBay.......

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Using Facebook to sell. Works great!
« on: March 27, 2013, 11:30:37 AM »
I never realized that trying to sell all this crap is like a full time job.

And there it is.

Add in time for auctions, picking, researching.....it IS a full time job.

I tend to rotate.   Pick, collect, get inventory however.  Then back off and just sell.
I'll still swing by thrift shops while in selling phase.  Randomly CL stuff while in collecting phase.
But for the most part if I'm hitting auctions and estates I'm not going to spend additional time listing and meeting people.   And while selling I spend my time researching and refurbishing, fixing.....dump runs.

Yesterday I saw two nice, old, possibly antique, chairs at an estate.
Tried to research but no luck.    They only wanted $25/ea.   Almost took gamble but decided I have enough chairs I've yet to sell.  (With furniture, I pretty much only buy things I will use/upgrade what i have. That way if they don't sell I'm not really out.)

I called my friend who just got a house.  Figured they would look nice in his entry way.
He liked them but today, being still in his truck, he swung by antique dealer just to see if he made a good buy.

Dealer offered him $300!

Passing on a deal is almost as bad as being stung.....

Nice.   Glad I could be of assistance.

Funny.  So many people have money from progressive.
Guess they don't bother evn trying to give refunds.  Just hold it then turn over to state.
Must be a cost thing.  Cheaper.

I fought with them for 6 months trying to get back money fom canceling insurance on a car I sold.
They denied...gave run around.....two years later it was in treasury.

Washington is the same.
Facility keeps back rent, cost (Ad, legal, certified mail...) and allowed a "Admin Fee" to cover expenses of personell doing paper work, inventory, running auction.....  Heard its up to $150 but not sure.

The rest is held in a trust account and previous owner can claim.   If not claimed its sent to the states Dept. of Revenue to be held in trust for whatever your states statues determine.  3-10 years.

You can see if you have anything in Washington at claimyourcash(dot)org

Texas is window(dot)state(dot)tx.us/up/

Those are the only two I know.
Anywhere else just google unclaimed property and <state>.   Should list out your treasurers office.....

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Selling Store Cards on eBay
« on: March 23, 2013, 09:56:10 PM »
you missed one scenario , person buys stuff at yard sale , auction, craigs list etc returns item to store and sells the store credit card

Guilty.   ;D

...........
Now that I've looked into it I'm  sad I've ever  paid full price. Dels all over.  And since they can't expire might s well grab while on sale.

Just found a visa deal.  Coupon so fee is only 99cents.   Safeway has a deal, buy 2 $50 prepaid vise, $15 off.   Buying them to pay my bills online and my doctors co-pays.  Hey, save a buck here, buck there.....adds up.

Sorry, I should have specified that they were excluded.

That's cool.
How about the Orangutans in Milwaukee using Skype?

Or these gorillas in the UK?

You should look into Yurts.    Pretty cool.    I'm sure your wife will love you for this change in life style.
Peace.  One with nature.   No room for storage unit finds.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: lost items
« on: March 23, 2013, 02:26:56 PM »
The messages I left did state for the manager to contact the new owners if possible and have them call me.

Around here if the old owner wants contact with new owner.....
Facility gives auctioneer contact info.  Auctioneer contacts bidder.  If new owner wants contact, up to them.
Only under one circumstance will auctioneer give new owners contact info out.
That's if there was personal effects in unit a AND auctioneer KNEW there was personal effects in unit AND he knows you made no effort to return personal effects.

What's funny is its legal to have "replicas" of older works (no copywrite's) and some have become become more sought after than the original!

I don't think law enforcement gives a $hit if you have a forgery.  Only if you try to sell it, that's fraud.
Most likely wouldn't even care if you were selling a forgery as a forgery.  As in, the buyer knows its a forgery.  I mean, the FBI has all of 14 agents to investigate art crime world wide.  Don't think they care much about investigating a $1000 forgery....

I just took 62 DVDs to a video store and they wanted to give me $20 store credit.   Ummm...what am I gonna do with a $20 credit at a video store?  I'm trying to get rid of DVDs!

Ended up giving them away to friends for dinner....buy lunch....

Some do.  The big ones that work for museums, auction houses.....

They give you a receipt and file report with police/FBI.  You can fight to get it back.
You either turn it over or they call the police.

These were obviously being put off as originals, had certificates of authenticity.   Different than just a really good reproduction.

Plus they were trying to sell them....and sell them as originals.  That's a crime even if you don't know our selling forgeries.
Might be different if you just had them hanging on wall and someone saw them.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Has anyone made any good picks lately?
« on: March 20, 2013, 01:18:45 PM »
All my picks have been for personal, not resale.

Got two suits.  An Armani and a Kenneth Cole.  Both in like new condition and fit perfect.
Armani was $17 and KC was $10.    Not sure original price on Armani but KC is was about $600.
I may try to sell the KC since its a style I don't have much use for.   It's the 'New York' line.  Kinda conservative.

Also got a copper sauté pan for $7.  Excellent condition.  New they are going for $75.

Only resale stuff is a bunch of iMac/PowerBook adapters. Like DVI to video stuff.  Got them for $3-$5 and sell for $15-$50.

Not much on the horizon this week for picking estates or for auctions so im just making the rounds to thrift stores and relisting smalls that haven't sold.

On the other side of this....

I went to an estate sale and the kids thought they really had something.
They found Salvador Dali art tucked away.  Even the estate company was advertising the great find.
Had them tagged in the thousands.

I went and looked.  They just didnt seem right....and I'm no art expert.
Went outside and started researching.   Went back and told them I was pretty sure they were fakes.

Man, they got pissed.  Saying they had a cert. of authenticity for each....

Went back on Sunday for the 50% off and asked about art.

Thy had called in an expert and sure enough.  Fake.   And he confiscated them.

Research everything.
