Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #1...January, 2012

I was able to hit my 2nd auction for the year.  This time about 40 people and 2 lockers.  Nothing fancy at all.  They went cheap enough 145  and 265  but stuff was just tossed in there.  Better luck next week.

The "barracuda" is back....

Barry rides in on a scooter and sets up free donuts for the crowd....

No Brandi and Jarrod.

****
First lkr...lot of stuff...quality ? Maybe not.
Dave bids Darrell up...Darrell gets it for $1.9K.

****
Nabila.....gets the next one for $500 after Dave bid her up a couple of times.

****
A 5x 10 with hardly anything in it. Barry gets it for $2.50....if all goes as usual it will have a $250 item in a drawer.

****
Darrel's $1950 lkr has....collectibles, lawn mower...some special bear...worth $1500. That's a lot of beanie babies.
Estimate for value....$3800.

Barry's cheapie...drawer contains...glass containers for catching flies....valued...$1,550 to $2,000. Hell I was only off on my value guess by a factor of 10...I guessed $250 before I knew what was in the drawer.

Nibala....scores an estimated value of $???....with currency and coins all in plastic !  All money worth...about $1900 and she made about $1,200 profit.

Is there a re-run of shipping wars on anywhere?  I enjoyed that more this evening !

Darrel's bear...worth $800.

I was surprised that barry's unit went for 2.50   I thought there was some good looking shelving in there that would have drove the price higher.

Flea Markets / Re: Startup Costs

You will not need a till. You keep your money in a cigar box.
You could find folding table for cheap at garage sales or for now put a blanket on the ground. It is better to have you stuff up so people don't have to bend over.
You need inventory (this will be you biggest start up cost)

How did you make out at your auction with 13 units ?     Just because there are a lot of units don't mean you will get one cheap.  You might have 60 people there thinking the same thing.

Don went to a 'new' auction today.  It was from moving and 'storage' facility and we really didn't know what to expect.  Turns out that many of the units are items that the people who hired the movers didn't want.  All junk.  Only two regulars, Don and another couple.

Well we know not to waste our time with that one again.

Tomorrow I hope he lands a unit, if not.....Tues, Weds, Thurs are all lookin' good! 8)

edit to amend~there were about 60+ people, with only a couple 'regulars'.

The last moving and storage facility I went to had some better stuff in them and would go back in a heartbeat. It was people who hired movers and put their stuff storage.  I like these better as this is stuffed that is stored long team and left alone.  Unlike storage lockers where the owner can be there 3 times a week if they like butting stuff in taking stuff out.

Todays crazy locker, Two bowling balls and two plastic totes that you could not see in $160.  I have no idea what people are thinking.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Is this for me?
« on: December 26, 2011, 07:37:33 AM »
One more way you could sell but it will cost you someware  around 25% t0 35% is an auction house.  It would be hard to give up that much.  But if you are going to sell just on e-bay alone this would not be for you.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: I'm also questioning this Business.

You could look at buying a trailer as well. (cheaper than a truck).

One thing when you expect a small crow it will be large.  ( I went to a Wednesday one 85 bidders about 250 people )
Buying is the easy part.
Might be better to just watch the first time. Unless you see a sweet deal.
I like your idea of getting to know who the players are, but this will take more than one auction.
Good luck !

Storage Auctioneers / Re: A Bidder as an Auctioneer
« on: December 17, 2011, 06:38:39 PM »
I would have no problem with that.  If you don't want a locker don't bid on it no matter who's it is.  We have a young guy here who buys lockers and has his own auction house.

In Pa. it depends on the storage company. I have seen where they cut the locks and take photos before anyone can look. Some that have storage company locks and tags on. I was at on auction and the locker owner came in and paid their  bill 5 mins. before the auction. Now if their lock was cut off or something is missing from their lockers someone would have some explaining to do. If someone does not trust storage auctions they should not go to them. Pretty simple really.

71

And how, PREY TELL, would you know it was the original lock ?  They could have cut off the real original and put on one of their own after they did whatever they wanted inside.

What if the owner came in and payed his bill and his lock did not work anymore ?

Better yet why do they charge you tax every month to rent a locker ?

I went to a pod auction today and I hope to go to more of theses. What I liked about this is all the units are stored inside and stacked. So this is more storage for long term and people are not going in and out them. A small crowd no more than 12 bidders. !st unit was the best. Some nice looking furniture sold for $340. 2nd a well stuffed with a little bit of everything went for $360. 3rd had a lot of wicker furniture that looked to be in good shape went for $550 and the last had good looking washer and dryer and other household items went for $625. Over all good units that went for decent prices.

74
The nice thing about this (if the price is right) is it is newer stuff.

It would appear that the new phrase is "Bring It"

I have already had it with "bring it" and it has only been on show. The dude with the cars and shoes is a joke as well.
