General Storage Auction Talk / Staged Units have me Pissed Off
« on: March 20, 2011, 03:50:00 AM »
Went to a large independant privately owned facility yesterday that has over 500 units and had 26 up for sale. Auction starts, normal auctioneer (owner) instructions he asked if there were any questions. Lady asked if they were going to cut locks, guy says the already did. Lady asked if they went into units, guy says at first no then says we just raised the doors and took pictures, lady asks if they took anything out of units, guy says no just took pictures. OK so suspicion is high among the crowd of over 200 people. Auctioneer (owner Guy) asks how many people were there for their first auction, two thirds of the crowd raise their hands. OK auction starts, first two units and they are full of broken crap furniture. Overhear an asisstant talking about the first three units being compiled. Well what that means here is that it's compiled of crap people left behind when they moved out. Guy never said that to anyone before we started. Of course he's not obligated to do so but I believe in being honest, guess others don't and no I'm not looking thru rosey glasses. So thats bad enough, get to third unit and it is so neat and plastic boxes stacked so you could see thru each plastic box lined up in a horseshoe configuraion down the left side across the back and up the right side of the locker. Only plastic see thru containers in it about 20 and it went for 400 bucks! Hackles are now up. Well I'll cut to the chase, the units IN MY OPINION and other regulars were STAGED. In nearly every locker 3 or 4 "attractive" items were 'placed' up front in plain view. An unopened jewelry box (leather and gold studded) sitting on the floor in the front of the locker as soon as you open the door.  In another unit a tool box set in the middle of the foor with half dozen power tools laid out on it in a row for display. An XBOX taken out of the box and sitting on it right in front, a organ elecronic keyboard leaning against the front wall. Boxes opened and the 'good stuff sitting up front in plain sight. The final straw was the two boxes up front side by side with noritake china in them. Not too odd until you consider that the plate on top of each box was unwrapped, turned upside down in  the box with the Noritake label facing up and forward at the front of the locker so it could easly be read. Newbies saw this **** and took it hook line and sinker and were bidding their asses off. Units that should have gone for 100 to 300 bucks went for 500 to 700 and up. I personally think staging like that is unethical at best and should be illegal as the property is not yet sold and shoudn't be touched even by the owner/auctioneer/guy especially to set the stage for the sale.........ok I'm thru venting and sorry for the long post. Just spent 6 hours of my life as an almost total waste........... >:(

I'd dare say that often enough the facility owners or even managers check out defaulted units the day before the auction. I'm in N. Ga, North of Atlanta and VERY SELDOM do I see a unit owners lock being cut off when the auction starts. Almost 90% of the locks had already been cut AND put inside the unit so you know the managers have been in there already. Thats when I get very suspicious and actually bid less. Yes I lose some potentially good lockers but if the owners and managers have pulled out some BLING already then that sucks. No way to tell for sure but I'd bet it happens more than we know.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: New unit won today
« on: March 16, 2011, 04:27:22 AM »
I have to agree with Teacher ebay is last and most expensive. CL wprks and you have to build relationships with used book stores, thrift and consignment shops, picture frame shops and I even have an antique dealer that I work with on the rare real antique find. I haven't tried auction houses ye but it's on my list. In Atlanta we have some flea markets but overall they are very low end selling lots of cheap knock offs so I seldom sell there. Teacher or anybody, do you have an actual ebay store or do you just list on ebay. I put up a basic store which saves on fees but it costs 15.95 a month. I've also started a store on the free site    webstore.com but they don't have enough exposure yet to be real viable.

Waterford Millennium Crystal there are 4 of the five 2 champagne glass sets in the original boxes and the silver water goblets (Sterling 880 marked on bottoms) three of them all from the same unit. I paid 460 for the unit and will make that back off the average stuff. These items are selling (not asking) on ebay in the 400 range for the three silver goblets and the 100 range per set for the Crystal. The silver weighs in @ 450 grams for all three. Made by Myron E. Freeman and Bro. Had to do 2 posts due to picture size.........let me know what you think.

I posted some comments on this before on another thread here. To a newbie or uneducated buyer this may look good but not to me. Looks to me like a way for someone to make quick money (read the owners/operators of storage auction depot). Heres what I see as problems for me as a buyer for this site and concept.

1. The $5.00 registration fee. For what? It does nothing but give 5 bucks to the owner, and you get what? the priviledge to bid online?

2. The minimum bid increment is $25.00......now I know some auctioneers set a minimum bid increment usually $5.00 not 25. Ask yourself why $25, look at my last comment (5) below and figure out why the higher bid increment requirement.

3. You don't get to see other than a picture whats inside the unit. At least in the traditional way you get some time to get up close and personal (from the door) to see what you are bidding on. In this case a picture is not worth a thousand bucks....err words...LOL. Yes I do see in the FAQ where the seller may arrange a viewing of the locker.

4. What's to prevent the seller from removing items after it is sold on line? You aren't there and don't get to lock it up on the spot when bought. Yes, I do see in the FAQ where storage depot "holds" the buyers money for 72 hours before the seller gets paid. Also a nice way for storage depot to 'float' someone elses money for a short period.

5. Lastly, storage depot charges a 13% commission on the sale!!!! Again, for what? Only to make money for themselves which is fine as it is a business venture but for me the buyer why would I pay 13% more than I have to? Yes you can say its paying for a service and you don't have the travel costs of going to a live auction  unless you go to the 'viewing' but at least at a live auction I can see what I am getting into better.

Not for me, not for me......

Man I have a ****LOAD of old 78's and some 45's that my wife is catalouging this weekend. Some with sleeves and or dust jackets. I'll send you a list of what I have including artist and songs. As you are the collector, how do you go about rating condition? Obviously if it's scratched or pitted or obvious excessive wear I'd say thats poor condition. At any rate, tell me how to determine condition by your standards and I'll include a column of that on the spreadsheet I'll send you. You good with that to start?

My experience so far -

1. Break even on all lockers, haven't lost yet (but eventually I will I'm sure)
2. 1 in 4 - I double plus.
3. 1 in 18 - I make 5 times the money on average.
4. 1 in 53 - is a grand slam ten times plus the money.

Thats taken from my spreadsheets (see my other posts) so its as accurate as I can be....................

The Lounge / To refinish or not????
« on: March 11, 2011, 05:11:44 PM »
Ok so I have a for sale posted here on the forum, an antique circa 1930/40 twin bed. It has the original paint on it which is worn and showing it's age. I'm considering stripping it down and finishing it with a light cherry stain and poly wipe on finsih to add some luster. In most cases I'd follow the rule of never removing the original finish on an antique but with almost no interest on the piece anywhere I think it may be the thing to do.

I'd like the groups opinion on whether I should:

1. Leave it alone
2. Repaint it as is?
3. Strip it and refinish it.

I'm an avid woodworker, I build custom furniture, book cases, built ins etc so doing a very good job on it isn't an issue.
Sorry I don't know how to set up a poll or I would............Thanks in advance for your opinions!!

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 3....March, 2011
« on: March 11, 2011, 04:55:08 PM »
I for one won't buy that way because you don't have a clue what you are getting after yo win. Playing devils advocae here, who's to say that the seller doesn't do a little sorting thru that locker once the aucion is over? It's not like you are there and immediately put your lock on the door so no one can get in there but you. I think the newbies and lookie loos who are plain stupid will buy into doing that but not me. When I look into a unit and win it, it's mine and I lock it on the spot so no question as to what was in there when I won it will still be there when I empty it............
