Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #5...May, 2013

Around here the prices have started coming down. But we're getting into that time of year where the "tax return rich" are bowing out of this new business venture they thought they'd be so successful at. I don't think I saw a room go over $500 last week.

I've seen the show. Great for repurposing ideas. It's entertaining.. but just like any other show, you have to be curious about those prices they're getting!

Etsy started out with a major focus on women. They still focus on women.. But there are biker dudes with Etsy accounts.

I've seen the app. Not enough people around here to make it worth my while yet. Although, if they develop (or have developed) a rating system, good to get in early.

Welcome! I'm from Raleigh, so you're not far. You're probably closer to Fayettenam. Lots of great auctions around. Many of which are on auctionzip.com, but those auctions bring the big crowds.

A couple of good auctioneers that work Eastern/Central NC..

Scott Millner
Butch Evans

Another is Elite Auctions. I haven't had an issue at these auctions, but I've heard things..

All 3 of them advertise their auctions on auctionzip.. but they're fair. Don't know if you have Security Self Storage out by you, but stay away.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: A Way to Sell Cell Phones
« on: May 25, 2013, 09:05:00 PM »
Basic cell phones do sell, lots of prepaid accounts out there that need a replacement. Cheaper to buy a used phone at the flea market or on craigslist than go back to the store and pay full retail.

The advantage to buying a used phone for replacement on a prepaid, you get to keep your number. If someone loses a phone, or breaks their phone, they can always go back to the store and get a new "deal" on a prepaid.. But they'll lose their number and any voicemails that were saved.

However, as the seller, it's always a good idea to call the carrier and find out if the ESN (serial number) has been blacklisted for nonpayment or reported as a lost/stolen phone.

I think Travis' idea for you is good. When you do warehouse yard sales, you have to blitz the community with good old fashioned home made signs. I wouldn't bother with fancy signs if you're in a financially depressed area. I live in Raleigh/Durham and there are some seriously poor areas, but there's areas that are more affluent. If I were you, and I don't know what part of the country you're in, I would advertise delivery and post ads in better parts of town. Also, check Facebook for yard sale groups locally.

If you don't have a website, get one. Then get on all the online directories about your areas "things to do" or flea market, yard sales, etc. Whatever has to do with your business. That's where people are looking!

The TV looks like an older LCD.. When DLP's were popular too.. Not that this is a DLP.. But I don't think it's a plasma.

This is true. Always better to scrap than throw away. However, I'm about 40 minutes from the nearest scrap yard. I don't really have the storage to save up enough scrap to make it worth my while to travel to the scrap yard. Nor do I have the time..

In my area the crowds are going down somewhat; if the prices start to fall too that will be great, but the regulars are hungry for inventory and some are paying for it.

Couldn't be more true. The regulars are itching for inventory and are willing to give up some profit margin to get their bin! I think this will change with time.. as the crowds shrink and the regulars start thinking profit margins again.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Staged?

I don't think it looks staged. I think it's just logically packed. The thing about online auctions is you always run the risk of managers "cleaning up" for a good pic. They do want to show you as much as possible, which is a good thing. But are their ethical standards such as that they won't go through the boxes as they're straightening up?

Yeah I was figuring on putting it up for $75 and hope someone is a Philco enthusiast and picks it up. I'm afraid I'm holding onto a big boat anchor.

I know that there are a ton of people into vintage and antique radios.. But I also have the feeling that those people are typically cheap.. Repurposing it isn't a bad idea, but my knowledge of repurposing electronics is limited.. The case isn't in terrible shape. The bottom is fraying a bit and the screen is stressed. Not ripped anywhere, you can just see where some pressure had be put on it.

Nice! Congrats on your find! But there should be a disclaimer.. Results not typical.. I'm all about the $5 units! If you can't make money on a $5 unit, than you should just go flip burgers.
