Craigslist / Re: Craigslist buyers - no shows and backouts
« on: December 27, 2012, 11:26:23 AM »
teacher, i was curious do you list all 100 listings manually or do you have a software that does them? if you have software you mind sharing? ive been looking for a multiposting multi city software for a while now but they are very expensive and there's really no gurantee craigslist wont shut it down a day after you buy it

Glad you had a good time at the auction. As to your questions I started out storing stuff in my garage never brought anything in my house too scared of bedbugs, roaches, mice, rats, etc so even garage probably isn't a fantastic idea but better than house. If you plan on doing this long term maybe put up a storage shed in the backyard. Personally I rent a unit I keep my stuff in or in really large units will just take over the unit for a month or two until I unload my stuff.

As for transporting items Home Depot actually rents trucks for $24.95 for few hours. That's not only way cheaper than uhaul but its also a much quicker checkout process vs sitting in uhaul for 45 minutes filling out paperwork to get your truck.

some storage facilities have their own box truck or rent  box trucks, if you get in good with the storage facility manager they will normally let you use their truck for free, I normally bring them a subway sandwhich or something when I go to auctions so works as a little bribe/relationship builder.

Also Here's a great book to help storage auction newbies only $2.99 for all the info you need to get started. http://www.amazon.com/Make-Money-Storage-Auctions-ebook/dp/B00A0245Z4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356628478&sr=8-1&keywords=how+to+make+money+with+storage+unit+auctions is a good book for beginnerrs with everything you need to know to make money buying units.

Storage Facilities / Re: Are sealed bid auctions common in your area?
« on: December 08, 2012, 04:25:16 PM »
i love sealed bid auctions prefer them to typical style auctions. yeah sometimes you may "overpay" for a unit in the sense you bid 300 and closest person to you is 150 some may say you overpaid 150 but thats not really true. if you bid a number your comfortable getting in at to make a profit who cares what you coulda got it for.

i think sometimes with traditional auctions people get caught up in the competition or competitiveness of the whole thing and sometimes bid higher than they would like. sealed bid takes that im gonna beat this guy factor out of it and you can just bid what ur comfortable having to make back.

i actually did a blog post about this topic about 2 years back freestorageauctionlists(dot)blogspot(dot)com/2011/04/silent-sealed-bid-auctions-vs-live.html if your into these auctions you may find it interesting

i watch that show from time to time. yeah most of  those guys are pretty handy and use scrap items to make prepping supplies, tools, machines. i imagine there's alot of stuff in units most of us would consider either scrap or junk that they can refashion into something usable for their prepping lifestyle

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: im sure this isnt my place but
« on: December 08, 2012, 03:43:02 PM »
I'm not crazy about the new layout but anytime any website comes out with a new layout I wind up hating it and then I get used to it and then a ways down the road when I'm used to the new one and they change it again I hate it again lol.

I'm very resistant to change. I dont like it just cuz before I kinda had it memorized where all the buttons were and was just second nature to post now i have to look around for stuff im looking for.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Are you a Storage Auction Gambler?
« on: December 08, 2012, 03:39:27 PM »
I remember one time years ago back when flat screen tv's had real value like in the thousands i gambled on a unit thinking there was atv in the box, was happy to see it was in the box, the unit did have plenty of good stuff and would have amde a killing even without the tv.

normallly my rule of thumb is only pay for the value i can see, no guessing or hoping.

One thing we have noticed is that "some" people do not want to do the dirty work. They look for the obvious and never deal with the digging in handling of all boxes, tubs, etc. They haven't a clue that this job can be backbreaking, hard, dirty, nasty work! I told a young man yesterday, we were going through all these dirty purses checking like normal and in a child's tiny purse in a zipper area were two gold and diamond rings. Haven't a clue why they would hide them there but they must have forgotten, (our luck). Also, was about to dump a bunch of dirty socks and something clinked, found one tied at the end and it had old coins packed in it. You just never know what you will find in the oddest places, so you have to get dirty at times. :-) JMHO

I agree I think most people are happy to sell the flat screen tv on craigslist and bring the louis vuitton purse to a high end resale shop or sell it on ebay but most people aren't willing to do the work to sell the plastic ikea trashcan for 0.50cents or a buck.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Cost of units in your area?
« on: November 18, 2012, 02:19:12 PM »
Totally depends on units. The really really large units that hold an entire household are going for like $1500 and that's without any big ticket items even really being visiblee such as appliances, car, lawnmowers, tv's etc. Smaller units that are full are going for $300-$500.

Hard to really nail down prices though as sometimes one visible item people want can drive the price up several hundred bucks

Just curious if anyone is planning on hitting up the black friday deals and either re-selling on ebay, your own website or maybe the flea market,

Not a bad strategy, there are some good deals, only problem being you can only be so many places at once so the really great deals your probably limited to one. My strategy has always been go for the items others aren't going to go for. For example everyone is going for the Nintendo DS, the flat screen tv, Ipad, etc. I like to go for the DVD's and other smaller ticket items like that. Great deals, there's generally no limits on how many you canget so go clean off the shelves, and easier to resell something like that on ebay.

Also, here is the K-Mart Black Friday Ad Circular Leaked, not supposed to go out until this Sunday 11/18. Looks like some good deals on flat screen tv's, tablets, laptop, etc.

I like the shaved head dude and his wife from the origional storage wars. I don't really like the dude as he's just not that likable but I like how they seem like a down to earth couple who work hard and are kind of the underdog.

eBay / Re: eBay selling up and down
« on: November 16, 2012, 12:44:43 PM »
I can't really pick out certain dates and times that business is up and down but my ebay business is very streaky. Some days I'll have 20-30 orders come thru in a day and other times I won't have orders come thru for a few days at a time then sometimes volume isn't great but I consistantly do a few orders a day. I notice ebay is very streaky.

I have found you definately have to find that balance between maximizing profit out of every item vs being willing to sit on items for months at a time and spending time searching out the right buyers. Maybe I can get an extra $50 for an item but if that means I'm sitting on the item for 6 months and spending additonal time seeking out buyers maybe I'm better off just selling it for a little less. That's a call everyone has to make for themselves though.

Well, I think the first person to make a mistake on this transaction was you.

That's a lot of A**L beads to lose !  ;)

My mistake was trusting that a large company like Fedex is competent enough to follow their own policies. Fedex COD is meant to be used for products up to 50k in value so in the grand scheme of things this is actually a relatively small transaction. It's still a big hit to take though.

Pardon my bluntness, but you're an idiot for sending $7,000 worth of merchandise COD. I don't care who the shipper is or what kind of reputation they might have. If it's not paid for, never ever ship it out!

You really have no idea what I'm sending or the industry I'm in. This is standard practice for the industry and if you're not willing to do it as a seller your going to lose out on business as many people want COD.

Also, I did everything I needed to do, I can't help that Fedex drivers are incompetent. It's not uncommon for my competitors to send upwards of 50k worth of merchandise this way. I was actually advised by my supplier to use it and start offering it as he said he's never had any problems. Now however I just have my supplier handle these larger orders for me and I take a cut albeit a smaller cut but no worries on my side.
