Flea Markets / Re: Had our best (and shortest) day ever!
« on: December 18, 2011, 07:11:58 AM »
Gratz Rockin - glad someone had a good day :)

I was bummed as when I called Thursday morning to get my normal spot at the flea they were already sold out.  I was like ah crap and it was going to be a very nice day just before a cold front.  Is what I get for not gambling and buying a spot 2 weeks ago when it was cold.

Been told December is a great month for new stuff, also for bikes and the like.  Jan and Feb are bad months, with March starting to pick up again.  Also have heard March is a great time to move furniture as everyone gets their refund checks back and go shopping.

Know the feeling craiglst. we keep putting off that paying for space and going too. Like having a job LOL Schedule and all. JK   Sorry you missed out. We are debating on selling over the new years weekend.  ???

What you have been told about the sell months are pretty good but now a days with the internet people start getting their refund checks in Jan. Real heavy in Feb. and trickles in in March.
If they have had only one job they can use their last pay check stub to file. Pay $9.99 and have their refund in two weeks. (Son and his wife) Oh crap telling my age.  :o

Oh and the furniture we have put in the thrift is flying out the door. Sold two sofa's in past two weeks. Went picked up another on Friday. She was out.

Picker's Paradise / Yard Sale Weekend of Dec. 16 & 17
« on: December 17, 2011, 04:41:38 PM »
Well we are beat. Some how we spent most of yesterday. Yard selling.  We did do our truck full dump run first thing.
Oh and rounded up all of our landscape pots, found a guy who would trade for plants. So I got some trees and mondo grass.

we spent $80 yesterday and got a recliner, sofa with two end recliners, tiller (looks brand new), 2 ten speed bikes. At the thrift for $310.

Today was up early to pick up a table and two chairs from classified ad. , Found a set of dishes, small night stand, Christmas music box spent $37.50. For sell for $145.

Total spent $117.50.
Projected sells $364 (that is with the 20% off).
Not bad

I found someone selling totes for about $3.00 each. Went to buy some from him he is Storage Auction Hunter. Says he throws the Kids clothes he gets away. New contact can have them for the cost of pick up.
;D ;D ;D All in all good two days except yesterday was too long.

Well Movieman don't blame you for not pushing the odds.  ;D

Sounds like the same kinda prices around here. Anything with a lot boxes and totes goes for a lot. I am glad we have an outlet that is paying off in the furniture department or we would be sitting idle too.

Went yard selling yesterday and spent $80. Delivered to thrift and came home with more money than we left with. Diversify.

Only a few Auctions next week like one or two with few lockers. Not sure we will make them or not. Still a lot of work on the last one to get finished.

opened thrift stores and my question is what is the sucees rate of these stores actually making it? With prices on the rise again and more and more people buying then ever before it seems luike opening a store would be hard with all the competion. One person opened a store across the street from a pawn shop and also across the street from a 65,000  sq foot thrift store. What are the odds of the new thrift store making it?

Well the thrift we use for consignment has been open for three months. Small community (four way stop). There is another thrift store there also. The difference is one is basically trash. The one we use is clean she decorates with the items for sale. Nice store, moves things around for fresh look. And thanks to us a pretty good inventory turn over. Plus her personality with her customers.  Her store almost looks like an antique / boutique.
And she is open from 9:00 till dark thirty 7 days a week. Family run so no payroll or taxes. I feel if she had to pay wages to employee's she may not make it. Oldest son is there everyday.

We thought that with Christmas right around the corner our sales would drop (mainly furniture down there) well in two days we have made over $300.00 after her 20%.  One Item was 50/50 split. Sofa given to us so we split the sale with her.

I feel the economy has changed how people shop. Thrift stores are a good business now. We have a dollar general on every corner. I did notice the thrifts in town (mainly charity) there prices went way up.

Guess what I am trying to say is there are a lot of variables in the equation. Another small town with a four lane highway running through it does not have a thrift. Seems like a good place to put one but one shut down about 6 months ago. So not sure.  Just my opinion.

Are there any states with laws that say the owners lock has to be cut at auction?

From Fl. and have only seen two facility cut the locks in front of you. Went to one and he had pictures of the units in his office. That one was new to me. Think more to cover his butt. This is what was there and I auctioned it. One of our auction company's also takes a picture of the unit.

Not a law on cutting locks. Just laws on when they can take the property. This is a cash business so some sticky stuff will occur.

Thanks for this thread.  ;D
Just got a LV bag and a couple of Coach bags in last locker. Pretty sure they are knock off's. Found one LV bag coming apart the seam was glued. (here is your sign). The other does have a serial # the inside is nice but the strap does not feel right. This women's intuition is off, would never spend hundreds on a handbag. LOL

Storage Facilities / Re: Why do storage companys charge tax
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:12:17 AM »
I hate to say it, but every single sales tax question is going to be state specific. Might be best for all of us to study the sales tax codes in each of our respective states, especially as small business operators.

I knew the California code pretty well when I was living there, and now have to re-learn the Texas laws.

So, my suggestion is to study up and, when asking questions, be sure to include the state you're in. Might even want to put the question in the regional forums.

You are right Matches.  Very State specific.

The site I use that is like CL  the site tells people not to support those who buy at storage auctions in there classified ads and to always ask where the item was bought.

Do they say why?

How many of you ever imagined you would be discussing how to sell porn??   :P

Not us. LOL  My momma would die. ROTFL.

Better yet why do they charge you tax every month to rent a locker ?

Because it is a rental. Here in Fl. If you rent an apartment for 6 months you pay sales tax. Don't remember why. But if you rent for 7 months you don't pay sales tax.

Falls on the service end I guess.  Don't get me started on the tourist tax.

Lol - you will get some looks on the Angels but this is a great time to sell them at the flea / yard sale.
Will have to go somewhere else to sell them where we sell I don't think I want the looks LOL

As for the purse - most of the high end stuff has serial #s in them from what I've learned.  Yet, to find anything like that - just 2 knock offs.

I found one knock off was falling apart the other has a serial # will see most likely knock off

As for pots/pans and such most that I find gets tossed in my scrap pile.  I take the handles off, or with large spoons and such I cut the metal from the plastic handle.  Will sort all the stainless later and take it to yard when prices go back up....hopefully in march.
The locker we got last week had sell-able pots in it.

Hope the frig works.

We did well with some pretty low end kids clothes so hoping most of them are kids. Broke down and bought some Totes. I will sell out of them. we did not even get started on them today. Cleaned up some of the furniture and cleaned up the shed from last locker. Took the furniture to the thrift. Tomorrow is garbage run and a few yard sales. And getting things in order and maybe get the rest of the furniture ready to sell. Not having a yard until after the holidays so plenty of time to get it done (yeah right).

Planning on finally going to the flea we want to sell at and see what the prices are running on some of the things we have. And just getting the scoop. Sunday is still far away LOL.

Stories about Storage Auctions / # 6 locker update
« on: December 14, 2011, 07:05:24 PM »
Had to run back and get another truck and trailer full.  Not many boxes of stuff.  We went through what we had all the gold had been pawned.  :(

This lady had four kids. We have lots of clothes will start that process tomorrow, and Friday, and Saturday.
About 30 large bags full.

So far the few clothing we have found is name brand. Some nice kids shoes too.
Don't have a lot of totes thinking about running to the liquor store to get boxes to help separate. Or just invest in some clear totes for all the clothing.

With $220 of furniture at the thrift we have a high bar table with 2 chairs, need to fix one of the chairs. A dresser we will spray some paint on to spruce up. Two low TV stands. So think if all that sells we should be in the green.  ;D

All the pots and pans are scrap---She used the H*ll out of them. A lot of plates think we have a box of china, did not get to that.  A few nick knacks (dollar store stuff) Will fill up the tables.

I will say this is the cleanest locker we have gotten.  ;D
It had not been there long had food (can goods, spices, and dry goods) in there thank goodness the rats did not find it. Industrial neighbourhood.

Might get some looks with the two Black Angles we have.. (craiglstauction let you know how it goes) LOL

Oh there were to front page news papers she saved. One was (Name of boyfriend) wanted for attempted murder. Glad we live in the sticks.
The other was man goes on shooting spree kills his father then himself and injured five people. Not sure who he was, brother, or one of the kids father?

We did have a lady approach us when we were loading the truck day of auction I was worried it was the owner, but it wasn't. She wanted to buy a bed. Then she asked if she could look in the unit. She was an older lady. She looked and said someone's whole life in there. I said yes ma'am. She said God bless them, as she walked away.

When we get into the clothes will update. Oh and we have a lot of purses. One says Louis Vuitton will go read the post about that I have no clue not into that stuff..Pretty sure it is a knock off.
