Anyone eles notice that they have the same auctioner all the time! Even in Vegas. Don't know about you all but I get different ones each place I go. Also do they all travel in a pack and never go to any other auctions? THE SHOW IS SCRIPTED AND IS FOR PURE ENTRTAINMENT VALVE. Unless you beleive everything you see on TV. We did a poll on the radio and took 30 calls and 5 say its real and unscripted and 25 say fake and are getting board with the show. But hey if your out of work this will slove all problems and you will get rich and Robin leech will be doing a story on you.

i get tired of people saying this is worth this, this is worth that. Its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
Very true. You have the greatest find of all time and its only worth what someone will pay. If not it sits and no money is to be made. I found three Indiana Jones dolls in the box worth 250.00 each but they dont sell. So they sit

a buddy of mine said he saw a preview for it and there was some guy in an all white suit bidding on every unit just to spend his money and win them all... my buddy said it drove barry crazy and he yelled..."now its personal!!!"  lol, i cant wait!  i love/hate dave, love barry and darrell and jarrod and brandi are fun to watch. overall the best of the three on tv IMHO--

really dislike storage hunters- could only watch 7 mins of it before i thought it was horribly faked and written crappy cable tv.  delete!
ton and allen of auction hunters are at least entertaining
but SW seems the least scripted.

Enjoy the dig!
You mean the show has the good, the bad and the evil? A person for everyone to relate with. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm sound like basic ingridents for a tv show. Yes its scripted.

The "Other" Job / Re: My full time "other job" is
« on: July 27, 2011, 09:59:09 AM »
I've noticed no one including moderators have answered this question. Is anyone really making a decent living doing this full time? If So, what dollar ranges? If so, how long did it take you to get there? If so, what do you do about health insurance? It appears to me that there aren't that many members on here that it would make a difference if these questions got true answers. Realizing that this is someones livelihood (supposedly anyway) and you certainly don't want to adversely affect that revenue stream it is somewhat understandable that there would be some reluctance to answer up........That said.......................

Aside from the TV shows hype, those of us that are truly looking at this as a business venture and not just a passing fad or hobby would like to know..........and we also view those shows as entertainment not reality. At least I do. I have bought a dozen or so units and have done fairly well. I'm to the positive side even after all expenses. Biggest slow down is finding the downline to sell the stuff into besides the standard CL/EBAY/ etc. For me, I take less money on any one particular item in order to keep product turning over and cash flowing... Thoughts anyone??
This could be a decent job buying lockers but when everyone is starting to do the same thing there is too much supply and not enough demand.

The "Other" Job / Other job

I'm a Broadcast engineer at a radio station and a recent grade from a HVAC tech school. All my storage auction money comes from side jobs from HVAC jobs and nothing from work paycheck! Thats my rule. Of course money from sold lockers goes to buy the next locker.

Anybody watch Storage Wars and think Dave Hesters estimates for profits is crap.He always estimates high high retail and sells at a second hand store.
You do know the show is scripted?I work in radio and A&E and advertiser aren't going to throw money to the networks for a unscripted show. The odds of finding 7 people that are TV ready would be like one in billon. They are speak complete sentences that can be understood and know with the million dollar secret code they give out is a way to keep people watching its there gimmick. The show is slowing selling out. Watch the promo of them throwing money at the TV very scripted and if you look in the credits they have a writer, director and producer. But hey that's what A&E STANDS FOR ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT.
The cost for a 60 second spot on A&E for that time slot is 14,267 and its only watch by 5,000 people as per the link I posted eariler. The show started out number 2  with 18,000 viewers and has dropped to 9 place with 5,000 viewers and this is with the new season. Its the same show over and over. Watch they will throw more drama and add spice to the show to keep it as a soap opera. And that my friends is entertainment.

There are lots of auctions going on locally this week, two today, one tomorrow, and one friday.  I went to the first one this morning which was at a Uhaul location.  They had 2 units for auction, a 10x10, and a 5x5x4.  It was run by the employees of the location, which usually I like because there's usually smaller crowds and cheaper prices.  The crowd part was accurate. 6 bidders, 2 looky-loos (2 older ladies that were clearly influenced by the TV shows)  Anyway, as we're walking to the first unit (the 10x10) the woman running the auction announces that there is a minimum bid that they must get for this unit.  OK, never really heard them charging a minimum reserve bid before, but whatever.  She opens the door on the 10x10 and it's only about half full, neatly stacked cardboard boxes, some stuff on top that's open, looks like craft supplies, I see some fabric, and one side is piled with garbage bags that look like clothes/bedding.  Then she announces that the bidding must start at $700.   WHAT?!
There were 2 other guys there besides myself that I consider auction regulars around here, and the three of us kind of looked at each other, then one guy asks 'where's the next unit?'  The 2 older ladies I mentioned earlier were like 'how do you know what's in there?'  needless to say, it was a 'no sale'  One kinda funny note, before she shut the door, the employee asked 'does anyone want to throw out any offer?'  I said 'yeah, 5 bucks' which she didn't seem to appreciate, and one of the 2 older ladies said to me 'but then you'd have to clean all that out of there?'  I just smiled and told her that's what I do.

So we go to the 5x5, again, minimum bid: $300.  The employee kept apologizing saying she was only doing what she was told to do, etc.  The 5x5 looked better, I could see a couple of computers, and I saw some newer Gi Joe toys which caught my interest.  One of the other regulars said he could offer $100, which I thought would have been fair for the room, but again it was turned down.  She did mention something about the bids being a percentage of what was owed, and what they wanted to recoup...but that just seems wrong, like get the stuff out at whatever cost and start renting it again to someone else.  At the end, they did tell us that they were looking into working with an auctioneer for future sales, so maybe they'll get it together later, but they didn't seem to know what they were doing at this one.
waste of time, hopefully the rest of the auctions this week will be better.

has anyone else run into this extreme minimum bid scenario?

I have seen this over and over and I cant say I blame the owner! If people are going to get caught up in the tv shows and they have no clue what is going on except what they are spoon feed from tv then I say start the units at &)),people are going to pay the high prices so why waste time from started at 10 bucks when the tv fans are going to jump the bid to 10000 or more.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: WHY are some lockers empty?
« on: July 26, 2011, 04:51:49 PM »
For the most part storage facilities do not look in the units when they place them on auction, they see the lock, tenant has not paid, so they end up auctioning it off, not knowing it was empty.
Well my friend is a manger of a storage unit and he looks in them  to see whats in them. He calls me and says its a waste of your time or its worth the time.

That was a good buy !

Looks like the sealed bid outfit is currently only in Utah and Las Vegas though, leaving out 96% of the country based on 2 states out of 50.

Its pretty new. Don't know if they will expand. I like it cause I have a week to deceide and they seem to have better lockers. Look at the completed and see what I mean buy high prices.

The way people bid there is really no room for big profit. Also now for every 10 of something there are now 1000. I use a site ksl.com which is local to my state and is free to post classifieds and there is too much of everything. Trying to sell a wash machine there are 1000 now. After the show goes away people will move on to the next fad.here are the ratings for the week 9 Storage Wars A&E Wed 10:30P-11:00P 5,089 and here is the link- look for cable top 25 for the week. Storage wars is sinking fast.http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2011/07/26/cable-top-25-pawn-stars-the-closer-rizzoli-isles-top-weekly-cable-viewing/98876/.

Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / New here from Utah
« on: July 26, 2011, 09:59:22 AM »
Been doing this for 6 years now from UTAH. I go to live auctions and also to a website we have here in Utah called sealedbidsonline.com. I sell my self on a website called ksl.com which is local and better than ebay and cl. I try to go to as many live auctions as I can but as everyone knows price are crazy and I beleive most people are buying for themselves and not trying to resell what they buy. Cause how can you pay 800-to 1300 bucks for what you cant see and make a profit. Thought the idea was buy low and sell high. Guess the bussiness is  a Competition is a contest between individuals, groups, animals, etc. for territory, a niche, or a location of resources. It arises whenever two or more parties strive for a goal which cannot be shared. Competition occurs naturally between living organisms which co-exist in the same environment. For example, animals compete over water supplies, food, and mates, etc. Humans compete for water, food, and mates, though when these needs are met deep rivalries often arise over the pursuit of wealth, prestige, and fame. Business is often associated with competition as most companies are in competition with at least one other firm over the same group of customers).

to see who can waste the most money. Which isnt bad cause my wallet gets so pack that yes it hurts my back to sit at times so wasting money helps to shrink the wallet. (lol) Comon sense people common sense. Take into account gas money, your time to load and unload, wear and tear on truck etc. Profit margin. Well thats all I had to say. Glad to meet everyone here.

Just remember we are the guest on the storage faculty property and know one forces us to be there! You can walk away at anytime and know one forces you to bid on a unit. If you get burned, yes it sucks but that's how ya learn! NOTHING AND I MEAN NOTHING BEATS A GOOD EDUCATION.
