Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 12.....December, 2011
« on: December 09, 2011, 07:03:56 PM »
Well Craig we finally got going this morning. And we saw what you saw sure you weren't in Fl ?  ;)

We missed the first two auctions on the caravan but caught up. There was a car in the one before we caught up 1963 4 door Chevy impala sold for $1700. Everyone talking about it. Saw a few regulars and a bunch of Noobies. One was there just observing he was also at the one we went to on Tuesday, He ask questions but not over barring. He is doing his homework. Another regular that we see almost everywhere we go was there. He went to one I had on our list he said it was bad will mark off our list. He was chatty today normally very quite. He is a treasure hunter.

A 10X20 packed full sold for $350. To one of the regular treasure hunters.
A 5x10 with mattresses and a table $1 + .10bp +6%
A 10x20 full of old trash was an abandoned unit. Had a Beta player in it.. LOL Think it went for $25.

We were talking to one of the regulars and we have bought from him at an equipment auction.
He had bought a unit at the first stop (that we missed) Said there was some furniture in it not much but he did not want it. We offered to help him load it up. (husband did not want to drive to the other side of town) But we did. This guy was funny he has a large van and when we got to his 10 X 10 1/2 full that he paid $80 for, He handed us large garbage bags and everything went in the bags Glass and all then throw it in the van.  :o   The van was half full so we had to throw it to get it in.

So after helping him we filled our truck up with a recliner, coffee table and matching end tables, TV, dresser (not a good one), Kids large plastic toy box, two small wooden kids chairs, kids TV trays, like new ironing board, king size memory foam mattress, and two crib mattresses. And a cargo net (we were going to buy one). He was happy the unit was empty and he did not have ot come back to it. Took to the thrift sold the dresser for $5 and the toy box for $15. had not even finished unloading the truck.

Last stop on caravan it is out of town (on our way home). It was two hours from the last auction. We went just to see who was there. They were all Noobies. They saw us pull in with our truck full, It was funny seeing them looking and guessing what we had done in those two hours. They finally asked if we hit a different auction. We should have said yes but said no we helped someone. They were killing themselves trying to figure it all out. Brandi and Jarrod

"I still remember being new but I hope like hell I was never so raw and stupid as a few we had today"

10x10 nice upper end furniture. 1/2 full $450. To one of the nobs.

So we went out spent $15 at yard sales, came home with all or money and about $100 of sell able stuff. Did not buy a locker but did the work. It was a good day Even with all the new people.  ;D

My husband has slipped up a couple of times, Bragging I call it.   ;D

Usual response is we picked it up at a general auction.

But now the cat is out of the bag.

Not sure if what the outcome will be. Last yard sale, Lady came up oh it's the lady with the van, (big white Chevy conversion) now yard sale hauler.  It is why she stopped.

We are a little spoiled need to find other places to sell might help the situation.

On the gem not one yet the last two units kicked our butt... LOL To much furniture.

Heading out today if I can get my husband out of bed.  :D :D
Still on the prowl.

General Storage Auction Talk / "Wished I had the Money to do That"
« on: December 09, 2011, 05:49:00 AM »
That is what we were told by a retired gentlemen at the thrift store yesterday. Dropping off a truck and trailer load, He looks at us and the store owner and Said "these are your storage buyers? " She smiled and said "yes they are."
The guy looked at us like he was jealous. "Wished I had the Money to do That" I looked at him and said it is a lot of physical work. (no offence but he was walking with a cane).

So when we started this we decided we would not broadcast where we buy our items, not to inflate the shows.

Ok Background The thrift store is in a small rural community (everybody knows everybody except for my husband and I we keep to ourselves or at least trying too) This community is a four way stop with a gas station, small grocery, and of course a hardware / feed store.

So the store owner is broadcasting how she is getting her supply. In her defence she was given a hard time about us yard selling in front of her store. People were worried we were taking business away from her. She explained no you don't understand we are working together.  The last yard sale was better, people went in the store after shopping with us. If I don't have what they were looking for I would send them into her. We try real hard to only have the really low end stuff out there to sell. Most of our inventory is in the store. So why take away from ourselves.

So has anyone else advertising they buy storage lockers? Is it helpful or does it hurt?

I did notice at last yard sale we had repeat customers, Which is good and they know we will have new items. Not the every weekend yard sale people with the same stuff every week. Did see an add for someone having the every weekend sale and they state they buy storage lockers. (don't want to be that person).

Not sure where the "Wished I had the Money to do That" came from.

So any thoughts appreciated

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Went to my first auction today and....
« on: December 09, 2011, 05:03:14 AM »

Everything went by so fast, I'm trying to remember the prices for the other two units.  I *think* one was $250 and the last one was $175.  The last one had one of those Sentry big file safes in there and a dirty basketball.

All in all, it was a learning experience.  There was a 10% buyers premium also.  The auctioneer gave out a list of scheduled auctions for the rest of this month and January.  I pretty much kept to myself with my hands in my pocket.
I tried to keep up with the prices and what was inside to post here and for our own records. I take a pen and little note pad now. LOL I am not alone an older gentlemen that is always around writes everything down (he has never bought think it gives him something to do). Guess I am the nerd at the Auctions  ;D

Now, I don't know if I'm overthinking things, but the fact that the vets didn't bid a lot on units said a lot to me.

Every time we find I new place to go I look for our regulars I get uneasy if I don't see them. Could be a bad place to buy.
"It's deja vu all over again."

Watching and listening is a good thing...if only more would do it before buying foolishly.

Best advice and we are with Movieman, wished more did

Welcome aboard.

Will find a lot of info here.  ;D

Well the minimum wage is defiantly not worth it. Don't think I have made minimum wage sense I was 15. We want discuss how long ago that was.  :)  Worth a shot while you finish school. I cleaned houses 4 days a week and went to school 3. I was much older than you when I went to school but making more money on a part time basis is the way to go. (Grammar was not my strong subject, To the regulars on here  :o)

storagetreasures is good. They offer a list of auctions for different places, not just one auction company. they do list some without auctioneers. Good place to start. But also look in the legal notices, you will get more information there. We have done our best with the auctions without auctioneers. Sometimes you don't know which ones they are until you show up. But go to as many as you can you learn a lot by just being there. (if you pay attention in class)  :D

If I were you I would plan your buying a locker around your school schedule. Buy one on a Friday so you have the weekend to get all the work done. It is part time but when you buy one non stop work until you get it loaded sorted and then selling. We spent 2.5 days on the last two we bought. Just a thought and good luck.

If you have the knowledge for furniture, or just as good - a good outlet to sell furniture that is where the money is many times.  However, I myself try to stay away from furniture unless it's a specific item someone has me looking for.  I just don't have the storage space, nor a good outlet to sell it.  That may change.

Today was my 7 facility auction.  Crowd actually surprised me - was less people then Monday which is backwards.  Plus, as the day went on people were leaving.  Normally the crowd increases as the day goes on.  Still a large number of newbies that were running the price up.

If we did not have the outlet for the furniture we would be shying away from them too. Sold the Foosball table for $30 = $24 to us. So at $59 total so getting closer to that $105.  :D
We did not make it to the auctions today. Late start it was cold here. LOL  No really went and dropped the rest of the furniture to the thrift,  and pulled our bed out of storage to take down there too. (What a pain).
Heading to an estate sale in the am then will hit the auction (same one different day) They do three days in our area. This is the one on Craigslist. So we will see.

Well said Cobia

@ Movieman glad things were a little normal for you yesterday. Digital cameras that is cheap. We sold a VHS video camera at the yard for $20, we did not have the battery charger, or the cord to see if it worked, have another one that is a Sony with everything and works, It did not sell  ???

@ Boxlot sounds like what we hit last month. We are going to the same one today will see if it has improved or not, not planning our day around it though.  ;D

Update on the not so good $105 Locker. Gave the couch away sold the chair and the TV for $35 to the person who took the couch. Still have a nice dining room table, foosball table, air hockey table, and two curved pieces to a sectional which make a half circle chair... LOL So not huge profit but at least not backwards. Oh and not buying furniture locker for a while.  :D.
Husband learned how much you can pack in a 5 x 10... Couch, two bookcases, dinning room table 4 chairs, recliner, two coffee tables, 2 end tables, play pen full of stuff, and big baby walker toy. This was the $150 locker.

Will keep you posted on our auction run today.

You forgot to read the rest of my sentence.  I said when I am making barely enough to survive.  If the money is good, then I'm all for it.  If I'm not being paid what I think I'm worth, then it's not worth doing.  It's going to be different with this, since I will be my own boss.  Heh.  I will definitely let you know how she is.  :)  Thanks for the welcome.

So what do you think you are worth???? ;D
My Dad and his brothers use to scrounge around the dump when they were young they found a 6' cabinet, Still in the family we think it is a doctors or surveyors, has a lot of cubbyholes in it, but really have no idea what it was used for. LOL
So are you hitting auctions on your days off?
Being nosey here we have talked about hitting the Tampa area for auctions.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: storage auction pay listings
« on: December 07, 2011, 02:27:01 PM »
Can't blame a gal for trying~

And I pray you didn't take me seriously.......

Funny rockin... We have not found pushing and shoving, Well my husband is 6'2" so nobody really pushes him. And I don't go in with the crowd. Stand on opposite side of unit if there is an incline I can see pretty good, or just wait for the crowd to back away. When I do get in there I usually step on some one when trying to get out of the way. LOL Then Like Craiglstauction said "I'm sorry or pardon me".

On the pay thing I don't, not one that does my area and have found most of them on my own. But with our current prices  the search on outside areas and putting them all together to decide where to go gets time consuming. And we are still noobies trying out different places and comparing them to the ones we know.

Welcome fellow Floridian.

The Auctioneer you are using is ok. Nyle Wells does most of ours. Don't care for him to much. Last Auction he spent 15 minutes advertising an Auction in Orlando. We had to stand there and listen before he got started with the auction. And he is usually late. Hopefully Tammie will be beter.

So you want to get out of customer service?  "I hate dealing with multitudes of people every day"[/b]
How do you plan on selling the goods out of your lockers?
And attending Auctions there are all kinds of people, The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly.

Good luck

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Junk or 'gems'? Which do you prefer?

Well I hope your next unit yields some serious 'bling'!

We just sold our biggest gem.  The Pablita Velarde painting that I mentioned in the "What's it worth" forum.  It did take the trip to Santa Fe, but the $3500 check in my husbands pocket more than pays for the gas.

Glad you got it sold.. And thanks we are going out again tomorrow looking for Gems. Got the low in stuff today...  :D

Went to a new facility for us. Was quite interesting the owner of the facility hates doing Auctions... He knew all the regulars by name. Advertised 13 Lockers down to 8 at auction time. Said he had to cancel this auction last month.  6 regulars and 6 lookey loo's. Prices were really good.

We bought 2
1st one 5x10 full $150 So far looking pretty good have not gone though the small stuff, But the furniture should double our money.
#2 just furniture $105 Not looking to good sofa and matching chair garbage once we got to look at it. dinning room table may bring us $60. So we should break even. With the other things in there.
The guy said this is the last one so people started leaving then he remembered he had one left...LOL They came running back.
There was a couple that we had seen with the news paper auctions. They bought some nice units at that auction. They bought 3 today. We had to take a load and come back with a trailer to get the rest. This couple was there and they were complaining about stupid stuff and called one of the regulars DAVE. Anyway they decided to leave stuff behind because really they did not want it. Wished we had room to take the stuff so the guy would not get left with it. He did not charge a deposit.

We would like both. But currently we have been getting Junk... No gems... LOL  Do like the turn and burn on the lower end stuff.

We have a great outlet for lower end furniture. Thrift Store,  I let her price it (she is in the market of what she can get out of it).

This is interesting we took her a blonde bookcase that we found at a yard sale We paid $5 for it, She sold it for $30. Took her two of the same size book shelf's they are black she priced them at $20.00 each. So guess color has something to do with it. Why we pay her 20% commission. Plus we buy and deliver no storage.  ;D

As soon as we find some gems will let you know. LOL
