General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Going to my first auction tomorrow
« on: November 22, 2011, 03:49:36 AM »
I learned alot today didn't buy or bid i went more so just to watch and learn. About 15 people ther but they were mostly partners and families 5 units went for auction cheapest being 25 and the most beong 270. i did how ever make 50 bucks  there, an older man asked me if i would help load a heavy head board and other things into his truck then gave me $50 for helping so im a happy camper ;D
Glad you went and just watched... Sounds like a good place to hit. Prices sound very good and the crowd even better.... And making $50 for a helping hand FANTASTIC !!!!! And helping someone out will buy you more than the $50... Way to go bigred.  ;D

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Preferential Treatment

I'd move.

LOL  :D

But we really like it here...  ;D

When we started our Steel construction company I went and took the class the State offers for free. I understood everything... 6 months later found out I was doing something wrong... (not by the state).
If we built something in our shop and delivered it to the job site the Shop labor (employees time) was sales taxed...  ??? But if we built it in the field non of it was sales taxed.(except the raw material). We built everything in the field.... LOL

Whoa, that doesn't seem right. Paying tax should ONLY be on the items you bought, not additionally on the "service" provided by the auctioneer.  If I ever DO buy at a premium spot, I will argue this point with them to the death if they try it.

I know it does not seem right but Florida Sales tax is a real mess. If you take your car to be looked at and they don't add anything to it your Labor bill is not taxed, but if they add a screw then the entire bill is taxed, Part plus Labor.  I am not an auctioneer so not sure how the tax laws work for them... But they put a little tag on the unit so that would be the item then the whole encounter is taxed.

10% buyers premium is what the buyer (you) pays to the auctioneer.

If you bid $100.00 you pay $110. And if they collect sales tax you pay that on the $110.

not sure what "management's call" is. Could be if they don't like the bid they can refuse it.

Hope that helps

Thanks jrossjr79...

I was talking to a friend of mine and thought maybe they were made for decorative display.. One maybe bamboo, but the others seem pretty heavy and non flexible for fishing.

Thanks for the break down... Of what is moving...

3) Games / CDs / DVDs - w/ case $2

Think I would keep going up at $1.00 increments on those.. when the sales drop then go back down.

 6) Gloves -- I can't keep a pair of gloves, they always sale.  Mostly $1 - $5

I think I would have to send them to you... LOL   One I don't see many and we only wear them maybe once or twice a year. Down here.. ;D.

2) Blue Lightning Buddah - he draws tons of attention but no one wants him for $20.  Is ok as it helps draw people in to spot just so they can touch the neon ball.

Buddah Priceless .. We would come to your table to look at that...

Items that have not sold or gotten much interest:
1) Books - even kids disney books.  May have to display better.
2) Cloths - most people seem to pass them up and only look at the jackets.

Sell the books dirt cheap 5 for a $1.00 or .25 each
Clothes sell better if you could display them hanging... Hard to do at the flea

Sounds like you are getting a handle on your area Fleas. Finding out what sells at the different ones will be great knowledge. Three different piles for different Fleas...

It is YET ANOTHER STORAGE LIST PLUG which costs $15 a month or $140 a year.

Reported to Drew; up to him to see if he wants to move it to the appropriate thread area or delete it.

Thanks Movieman... That is what I figured.. Didn't even bother to try... LOL

The Blue willow plates a nice find... Even if reproductions can bring you some money.. My husband had to have a set. We found one for $45 or $50 I think been a while... They are a reproduction but he was happy.

The clothes do take time, but I feel worth it get every penny.. Our 1st Locker was $30.00. We have tripled our money on it..Mainly Kids clothes, we did find a laundry basket of dirty smelly clothes Nasty...  :)
We sorted and I did wash some mainly for the smell. I still have 5 containers left of the kid stuff. Thinking about going back through it and seeing if I can put small lots together for ebay.
I thought I had separated the sizes pretty good, Well on yard sale day spent a lot of time looking for sizes LOL
Most of the clothing was summer stuff and it was cold the day of yard sale... go figure... We are in Fl. So not cold very often LOL
Glad you found some goodies that sound like they will pay for your lockers and the rest is gravy.

Glad you made some money... We were planning on going this weekend also.... But could not pull it off with this equipment...  ;D

My Uncle brought some stuff for us to sell for him of course I had to clean it up. Then I started going through the stuff my husband bought at another auction. $5.00 for truck load of stuff.. Of course all guy stuff. Drill bits, Bolts, Bucket of old screw drivers ect.. Of course he was going to help but got called to do some other work for a good friend of ours.... Like I be leave that... LOL

After inventory check most is yard sale stuff not worth the trip to the flea.    We only need to make $3.00 more dollars to be in the green.. We need a full locker to build up our inventory...Auction's on Tuesday So hopefully we can get one at the right price. Our total cost for the flea would be around $60.00 for two days. (it is a little bit of a drive, so with gas and booth rent) Need a nice inventory to make that kind of money.

Back on topic.

judy79... keep your ears open. I have posted some-things I have overheard at auctions and some may have been BS to try and scare the Nobs away.. LOL But the other day we went to a new area and two regulars were talking one was an older gentlemen who likes to talk about the business. Anyway they talked about this auctioneer, who did not liked being asked how many units are here LOL Then they talked about another auction company and that they got into some trouble one of their auctioneers was being prosecuted for stealing. We did not get the auction company name (should be easy to find if there are criminal charges) But if we decide to go back to that area we will be on our toes.. Just by listening. Best to start out by just going and watching... and Listening. Good luck.

Not around where I'm at (Central TX). Goodwill wouldn't even come and pick the clothes up for free. I had to pull a night op and drop them off at their donation point after hours. And there was good stuff in there (GAP, Abercrombie & Fitch, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi 501 Jeans) all in very good condition. They didn't fit me or anyone I know and I couldn't sell them on Craigslist either with pics & detailed descriptions so I just unloaded the stuff to free up space.

That is throwing money away.. Hit the mass market of Ebay... We got two pair of Levis in last unit. Husband kept one the other is on Ebay.. Current bid $7.50.. the tag on these is illegible other wise in good shape. Went to a yard yesterday and picked up two pair for $4.00 going on Ebay today. Double my money if they sell for $4.00. I will list starting bid $5.00.. And using the flat rate envelope from USPS. Ships for $4.95 and I add a Dollar to that.
