West / Re: Prices of Units in Small Towns
« on: November 13, 2012, 09:11:40 AM »
I'm in a medium sized town (500K) and its hit and miss. Some auctions are great and units sell for reasonable prices then the next day, prices go out of control. Bidding wars for trash.

medium is 500K??...well then I am in a tiny village 10K in this particular town.  ;D

I am from the other side of the country and see the opposite.  Small town auctions with very few buyers at some of them.  At an August auction me and only one other guy showed up he was a former buyer in poor health just looking really.  I got three units for $45 total.  Auction in early October me and 2 other buyers at start I got first 2 units for $125.  None were packed, but solid in profit on all of them.

That's terrific!! I wish we could get a little of that here :-)

West / Prices of Units in Small Towns
« on: November 13, 2012, 07:31:13 AM »
We are from a small town in Central Cal. We usually travel 2 hours at the most just to get to some auctions. That's fine for us been doing it for years this way and it works. Yesterday we went to an auction in our area and we couldn't believe the prices these simple nothing units went for. Couldn't figure out why at first and then realized most of the people that were there were locals and they don't travel out of the area to get to auctions so they bid outrageously just to get anything! One unit went for 725.00 and honestly was not worth (to us anyway) more than 300.00 max. Just a lot of bulk crammed in and not in a good way (some broken chairs etc) into a 5x10. I'm not saying they shouldn't heck if they spend that much and see they get junk maybe they will stop going. ;-) But, question is, does anyone else see this type of thing going to small towns?

If you are selling at a flea market each weekend you will need a license. In California at least, it is Calif State Board requires that info.

I can tell you on long island their auctions have been jerked around something fierce in the past year or so, different newpapers for the ads , different rules for the auctions , different order for the caravans  etc

Not sure of this is true but, I was told a lot of facilities are using smaller newspapers because the larger ones charge so much and they are also using CList along with that. I guess it's just up to us to do some research to find them all.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Picking at the Storage Auction

Your right. To me, the offer need to be fair otherwise I have no problem selling it on my own. If it is a item I don't want to move like a projection TV or refrigerator, even if the offer is 10-20% lower, I'll probably take it.
I agree completely with this. If I am selling something pretty cheap don't try to dicker me even lower.  Like I am asking 20.00 for a fishing pole and you offer me 5.  :'(  As the saying goes... "You don't come into my house and disrespect my family!"  ;D

Have you ever been approached by someone, after you purchased a storage unit, that was interested in buying a particular item in your unit? If so, then you've been picked. Does anyone use this strategy while attending storage auctions?

we were at a U-Haul on Glenrose (Sacto area) and got a unit with a guitar and a case. The guitar was made in China so no biggie and it was a beginner's type training guitar. Anyway, this kid comes up and offers us 25.00 for it and said he would probably just dicker around with it. We told him thank you but no, we did some research online and it would sell for 200.00 new..We got 150.00 when we sold it. Since the kid thought we were newbees (new to the area at the time but not new) ;-) he thought he could con us. I would love for someone to come up and ask if they could buy the mattresses, washers and driers etc. but noooooo they don't do that...  ;D If the price is right it's SOLD!! <doing my nest Jackie Sutton imitation>

Hello can someone tell me how much a 1922 singer sewing
Machine model 127 costs?

We had a 1942 or 47 a few years back in good condition, with paperwork, extra feet, bobbins, threads etc. and sold it for 150.00 and we had tried selling it for a few months when we decided to consign it ... it's tough to sell if you don't have the right resources to go to. IMHO

I just spent the last hour or so discussing the storage auction industry with, let's call him "Hank," a major player in the storage industry (owner in 100 +/- storage facilities across the country). While Hank didn't give a specific name, he did mention that 1 of the top 5 storage companies in the United States actually instructs their facility managers to misinform people about their upcoming storage auctions.

The information he was giving, was it good or bad for bidders? Were they saying the volume of units was more or less that what they actually had? Were they giving bad information about what the tenants did or how long they had been away from the units?  ??? Inquiring minds wanna know  ???    ;D

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Storage Wars Texas

Yeah, Walt is a really great guy and he is very down to earth. He truly deserves his success. He even has a link to this forum on his website, which is appreciated. ;)

Walt is one of those people who "pays it forward". Just remember: For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.
I have only met him twice and both times we got caught in some filming they were doing at Abby and another place. He had a big crowd but he knew he had never seen my husband and myself and visa versa. He made it a point to come over and shake hands with us and we all introduced ourselves. I was very impressed with the way he handled himself. The auctions we usually went to were Jackie S and Luther D. plus a couple others that I can't remember nowadays. I sure miss those auctions. In Central Calif now and they are too short of runs. Loved the 9a.m. to whatever runs in Dallas/Ft Worth areas.. :-)

I bet not too many more.  It seems to get a lot of negative comments. But, who knows, Sienfeld was going to get shelved once too.  :D

About a year ago, I remember seeing casting calls for Storage Wars New York and Miami. If they came out with a Storage Wars New York, I would probably watch it. I wonder if these shows are still in the works.

Last we heard they were having casting calls in Atlanta now. But, rumor mill (and we all know about rumors) is, since SW Texas is doing so poorly, they may just shelve it.  ???
