Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Worse locker ever
« on: March 11, 2011, 04:50:16 PM »
I guess I've been very lucky because my worse locker ever was one I only broke even on after labor costs and dump fees. I've managed to "SQQQQEEEEZZZZZZ" $$$$ out of almost everything. I keep a running log book and list the facility, locker number, purchase bid, and then a listing of each item that came from that locker. Then a column for sales 'asking' prices found on the net then a column for what I list it for amd finally a column for what I sell it for. All done in MS EXCEL. Now, I say I, but in reality it's my wife wife who does that and is a very organized lady due to her accounting background..................

Agreed, it'd be interesting to see the growth curve over six months but more ineresting to see the decline after the reality sinks in.

I have a full size pick up and an Avalanche along with a 10 foot trailer I have owned for 12 years and thats what I use to haul with. No extra costs except fuel. I used to sell from my house and after a few flakes came out I felt uncomfortable. Not for me (because I'm always carrying and am permitted to do so) but for my family so I rented a 10x15 unit that I sell stuff from that someone wants to pick up. I ship from the house but face to face is either in a parking lot or the storage unit. We put together a couple grand in seed money to start this venture and it has been self supporting since. The newbies and wannabees will get their tax refunds and blow it and hopfuly be gone in another 60 days..........

I look to this as more of a networking thing. You can't cover all the bases with ebay, cl, local fleas etc so if I have items to sell or items I may have a buyer for but don't have that item and or have items that aren't moving quickly enough locally I'll let it go to the group at a good price just to make a little and turn over my inventory so I can go for the next buy. As I had said previously, at least for me, my goal is to turn it over for a quick profit even if it is not the "full" profit I could make by hanging on to an item longer. Case in point I got over 100 Avon Collectible bottles (no duplicates) all in the original boxes out of my last locker. With the boxes the average retail price is somewhere near $10.00 a bottle. Thats some at 8 some as high as 20 a bottle. I'm good with selling the whole lot to one person for 4 a bottle plus actual shipping, no charge for handling or packing. For me, putting 400 back into my pocket now breaks me even for the locker then the other items are my profit and I'm flush to go buy more. Thats my take on it........OH BTW, anyone want to buy 100 plus avon bottles in original boxes and most of them are full for $400 plus shipping.....LOL

Fourth answer, none of the above or fifth answer just having some fun or sixth answer a newbies attempt at sales ....actually the correct answer is just having some fun as some of the topics and responses have been way too intense lately. Oh and maybe a little bit of the dumbest post category on the forum.

Willing to pay two tens or a single twenty for a fifty. Anyone interested?

Very cool but I think Mr. Newbies comment would be more of a meltdown reaction like "Oh ****, What THe F$@* do I do now, My wifes gonna kill me for spending so much money, how am I going to pay the bills cuz theres no gold in the locker....damn, I lost my three kids somewhere, gotta backtrack and find them!!" hahahahah ROTFLMAO///

Finding auctions to attend is easy with just a little legwork and a bit of networking. Buying units is even easier, just a matter of enough money. For any newbie, I'd concentrate on finding places to sell your "treasures" & "trash" after you buy a unit. The real work begins when the auctioneer says SOLD and thats where most people fail.

I too have used replacements.com as the high water mark for retail prices. In reality take those prices and cut them in half and you get closer to reality. I've even sent emails and pics into replacements.com offering to sell them china at half of what they had listed it for and they didn't even respond. Not sure how they stay in business..............JMHO

Never a good sign with bounced checks or a lot of legal suits. I guess I'm still lucky or its because I shy away from '****ty' lockers because I haven't yet hit a really bad one. A few that were less than desireable but still managed to get my $$ out with time and persevearance.

Maybe ebay is beginning to feel the pressure from other sites??  Hope so. I see where someone listed the ebay clasified site Kijji? Has anyone had any experience positive or negative with listing there?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 3....March, 2011
« on: March 02, 2011, 05:06:26 AM »
I'm with ya on the pain thing. I've got a screwed up back and have to go thru epidurals in my lower spine. HURTS LIKE $#!@*&^%$ when the injection starts but then the pain goes away and I'm good to go for a while. It's a real ***** doing the physical part of this business when your age and back and knees are shot. Luckily for me my Son and Wife are in this together. My son is a hoss and can work like three south of the borders and even though wife has had five back surgeries she fights thru it to. We all make a good team. I'm in this part time for now but who knows, that may change once the tv shows lose popularity and the crowds thin and the prices get reasonable and the lookey loos lose interest when the real work hits them and their income tax runs out and they don't get rich and they....oh nevermind, I'm singing to the choir here............

I'd say helped also because it gives you many more outlets for your 'stuff' and more importantly you can find out what that stuff is really worth and wha it is currently selling for so your expectations are in the right place. I recently got a ubit with almost 60 bottles of very old avon collectibles ALL IN ORIGINAL BOXES. At first I thought OK with the boxes $20 each but after researching it's half that and I'm just going to sell th whole lot outright to some at 5 or 6 a bottle. Technology is a love hae thing but mostly love.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Flip or hold?
« on: February 28, 2011, 07:48:35 AM »
I'm all into flipping it as quickly as possible and keeping my money working versus holding out for another few bucks. As we all know, the more lockers you buy and sell the greater the chance of running up on something good so turn and burn is my motto.
