Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / Re: hi from long island ny

Mike,

Welcome to the forum. How are you guys doing up there? Are you seeing a lot of water damaged units?

Damn.   Beat me to the question.

I was talking to a friend in Jersey and he lost his unit.  Lots of delinquent units but facilities are writing them off, not auctioning.   To much damage or condemned or in his case.....gone.   There is seriously just an empty lot.  It collapsed and owner or city bulldozed it.   He's still trying to figure it out so he can put in an insurance claim.....cause he was storing gold bricks there.....inside the Ferrari.....that was also made of gold.....      ;)

Yeah, keep us posted!

I'm in Dallas frequently and couple buddies got transferred to Fort Sill.

Always see just tons of storage facilities and wonder how they do.   Can't figure if its good or bad that you can rent a 20x20 for $75/month.     One way I think it's so affordable lots more business = lots more defaults.     But other side I think, whose going to loose there entire house contents by not paying $75?

Other up side I think of is I'm betting a lot are used or business storage (my favorite!) , as shops (like working on cars, boats...) and to store your "fun stuff". Like ATV's and what not.

Really interested in what the contents are and prices and personalities of the crowds.

Also, where are you finding the listings of auctions?    I've tried to find some but online resources haven't been very giving.    Tho I must admit I wasn't very dedicated to it.

I do have an antique store and pawn shop that I deal with.  Estimates and buying/consignment.
Neither gives the best prices but they always are reasonable and have cash on hand.  Also know about things that I have no clue about.

I do my own restoration and fix (small) appliances myself.

Best contact is a guy that owns a flatbed.  He'll tow a car just about anywhere in the state for $50-$100, sometimes flat, sometimes plus gas if its far.

Also good for moving those huge items like a six foot tall, 700  pound drill press.....

He will also scrap my stuff for a fee/cut.

Pros:

1). As you said....share gas expense.

2) You can borrow money/split locker.  (Tho I refuse to do either)

Cons:

1) if its not to your liking but is for them, your stuck.

2) they win, you don't....your stuck while they sort

3) you get stuck helping them move crap they've won

I put them on the curb and they usually disappear within an hour.

Same here.

I do so few auctions I've never had many.   No space to store if I did.
And most are crap or no lids.    Good ones I use for personal storage or they disappear to friends/family.

One time that I did have a quantity I donated to local 'Pea Patch'.
They use good ones to store people's gardening tools.  Bad ones for planters, compost bins, hold soil.....

The gun buy back programs in CA, WA nd NY have always been anonymous.   (Tho I'm sure the Feds track the card numbers. As soon as you buy a traceable purchase or use with club card number, your in a data base......god I loves me a good conspiracy theory!).

I'm sure the majority must be broken, stolen, used in homicide or worth less than $200 on legal market.

I know they put a limit on how many gift cards you can recieve because gun brokers were gathering up all thier under $200 pistols and trying to turn them in.

Turning in a stolen AR-15 seems weird to me.    You can get more than $200 for parts.   Strip the lower receiver (or upper on SIGS) and toss that.  Sell the rest.

I wonder if turning in just an AR15 lower receiver gets you the $200?   That the part that's considered the 'gun'.

I'm glad they got him!  and he confessed, but......

Doesn't anyone know how to say "I want my lawyer".    Shut the <blank> up!

Got a storage unit that had multiple people with access to it. Was opened to public.  Possible even opened before auctioned.  Contents transferred.

Man,  good lawyer could even squash a probable cause warrant and/or evidence gathered if that was the basis of the warrant.....

It's not what the cops *know* you did.  It's what they can *prove* you did.

That said, I'm glad he wasn't smart enough to do so.......

Hope, if he doesn't get life, they don't just house him.   That guy needs some help.

How is the Kmart gig?

I think I'd go nuts.   When I was 16 I worked holiday at Fred Meyers. Toy section!
It was horrible!

The next year I worked their Xmas tree lot.   That was actually better even tho the  store manager mde us stay in uniform!  Dress shoes, dress pants, white dress shirt and tie!   Totally destroyed several sets of clothes and a pair of shoes.   35 degrees and heavy rain.   All for $7/hr.  But better then dealing with the crowds.

After that I gave up on retail and went into resturant work thru school.

Yeah, .22s are big sellers right now.

"Gun Guys" turn up their nose but they have a use.

Survivalist think along the lines that small game is the most plentiful so a .22 is just fine.

Easy to learn on.  Cheap.  Cheap ammo.
Not to sound chauvinistic but a good deal of ladies don't shoot because of fear of the recoil, noise or "they are to heavy".   22 solves all that.

And for home defense?   Well not much stopping power but a rile with 20-30 rounds t our disposal.....
ANY gun is better than no gun in a fight for your life situation.  And you have less worry on killing a family member or bullet going thru wall and hitting someone.

And you can buy silencers for .22s for about $150.   Defend your home AND not wake the children!  lol

Or you can just buy a big dog and name it DueceDuece.   Might work better......

Craigslist / Re: Are CL buyers really nuts or what?
« on: December 27, 2012, 02:34:40 PM »
 I had what I thought was a similar situation......and I screwed myself.

Had a bunch of iPod parts (from my fail at deciding to try and fix them)
All gotten free.  No one wants, been trying or months.

Last ditch effort before tossing I throw on CL for $50.

Kid from WSU calls.   He'll come get but can I hold until he takes his finals?   Since he was the only call, sure!

But I'm thinking that's a long ass drive!  300-ish miles.    I offer to send if he pays shipping. Cheaper then gas.   But he says he is in a dorm and packages often get "lost"

He shows and you can tell this guy is broke.  Crap car but well kept.  Dresses nice but Target stuff (not saying there is my thing wrong with that).  And just the nicest, politest kid.

Now thru all conversations and at meeting it sounded like this was why he came over.

So since it was all free, broke college kid.....I just gave it to him.

Then, in conversation, he says something that triggers my attention.

I ask:  did you drive all he way here just for this?

Him:  oh, no sir!  (Yeah, he called me "Sir"!).  I'm home on Xmas break.  My parents live just down the block.

Oh well.   It's Christmas.  I'm happy the kid can make some money.  And he was really appreciative.

Craigslist / Re: Craigslist buyers - no shows and backouts

Constantly!

I set a time and place but tell them three things.
1). If I don't hear from you by email/text/call the night before....deal is off.  Cause I'm making other plans.  (I do try and contact,  not totally on them)

2). I'll call/text in the morning.  If I don't hear back in a reasonable time, deals off.

3). I'll wait 15 minutes past set meet time.   If your lost, traffic, whatever.....you better call BEFORE the set time.   You call me ten minutes after set time and say your lost, I'm gone.

Tho.....all those rules can be thrown out the window depending on how long I've had the item and the profit margin.   ;)

eBay / Re: UPS, FedEx & USPS - How to know which one to use
« on: December 27, 2012, 01:48:43 PM »
Not being a shipper type, and i do 99% 'smalls', I just stick to the postal service.   I haven't checked in a while but when I did do comparisons, USPS ws always they cheapest.  I can track, insurance, all that....
And our postal guy is cool.   If I miss the 'pick up' deadline  I just leave a sticky note in mail box and he'll come up.

When I do need to go big it's always  UPS.   Don't even check elsewhere.   I've never had a (major) problem with UPS but I HAVE had problems with FedEx.  Plus the ups guy that comes to my house is awesome and the FedEx guy is a total d*ck.    The ups guy knows I work downstairs and can't hear the door and will come around back.  While the FedEx guy left a laptop (in a box clearly mark it contained a laptop) not only sitting on front steps but out in the rain!

I just do (did? havent gone in a while) small lockers, and with limited space at home i wont get more than 1or 2, so not very much.  Usually just $500-$1000.

There has been a few that I've only taken $500 and then it turns out there was many small lookers up.
I just ask if its cash only.  Always have debit card on me.   But it's never come to that.

The neighborhood, parking situation and amount of cash determines personal defense items carried.

One facility no longer allows firearms on the premises.  In reality they can't enforce it.  All they can do is ask you to leave and if you don't its trespassing.    But it's in a nice area, you pull in and they lock gate when auction begins and they have security on site.  Not armed security but by the looks of these guys I'm thinking they have guns close by.  lol

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Dumpster Diving
« on: December 27, 2012, 01:11:36 PM »
I don't dumpster dive specifically.  But I do keep my eyes open.

When ever I'm in a certain area I have spots I'll check out.   Car batteries, auto parts......just a few weeks ago I got a porsche 911 fender with a slight dent.  Rubbed it out and sold for $160 (tho I agreed to deliver and cost about $30 in gas so really $130).   Could most likely got more on eBay but shipping those things is. B*tch!!   And ya'll know by now tht I HATE shipping!

And the universities around the years end is good.

Don't know if the coupon or deal is still on but online there is (was?) a $75 off Phillips Norelco 3D razor.
Walmart has (had?) them on sale for $119.  Comes to $44, normally $149-$219 depending where you go.

Didn't even ebay.  Sold them all in a day on Craigslist for $100/ea.
