This most likely isn't so different than what Travis has been doing on VSA, but you still hate to think your just buying the owners old stuff! These old swindlers need to be called on their indiscretions and I'm going to explore the right avenues to do that.
[/color][/b]

When it comes down to getting justice on something like this there's not much that will be done by any agency. This is at the worst a white-collar crime (though a dirty white collar) without too much loss (if any) on the part of the person who got stung.

District attorneys aren't going to explore something so small....even if was an on-going enterprise by a facility it would be difficult to prove multiple instances....many buyers wouldn't even know they got hit by a setup.

Now pressure from customers might put a facility on notice, and an aggressive buyer who got stung might get satisfaction from the facility and the auctioneer if enough pressure was brought to bear. To wit:

Several years ago a buyer bought a beautiful looking locker for $4,000. Turned out the new, brand-name cardboard tool boxes were ALL empty!  He screamed enough that the got the $4k back and the facility got a bad rep which is only now coming back around due to new management.

But getting any government agency involved...IMO...it isn't going to happen with any ease or regularity....there are bigger fish to fry...violent crime, drugs, etc which will take priority. A car repair shop which is defrauding customers would be much easier to catch as an example.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #8.....August, 2013

I went to two auctions on Tuesday the 6th with a crowd of only 15 at the first one and five lockers up for sale. Of the 15 buyers, five were regulars....all with enough money to make it a contest. Only one of the regulars bought a locker as the better ones (but not great) went for twice what they should have.

A promising 5 x 10 showed a guitar case up front, two old record players and neatly stacked boxes which might have held other older items. I would have gone $300 but it went for $575. Turned out the guitar was not in the case.

*****

Second place the crowd had grown to 25 with same 5 regulars in the mix. Six lockers with the best one saved for last. It had 3 interestings rectangular (larger than foot locker) boxes squarely wrapped in blue or silver tarps. Looked like they wanted to protect those from the elements.

A regular got it for $350 and was nice enough to let me watch him go through it.  The largest trunk revealed a top level tray with.....old linens but nothing worth selling. The bottom contained....more blankets, etc. I guess the tarp was to keep all this crap dry.  Also contained two large artillary shells with carved figures...."trench art" but they were from 1975 so perhaps not as valuable as WWI or WWII.  Small jewelery box contained....6 audio cassettes! So pretty much a bust.

Next wrapped box was a standard size footlocker which contained ..... not too much. One sterling sugar bowl, forget what else, but not valuable for the bulk.  Two more footlockers....nada.  One of those contained legal documents from decades ago...guess it was importnant to the former locker owner.

One large hand-made box with maybe 10 rolls of electrical cable of some kind with connectors on each end. Turned out it was for a solar system. There was a "disconnect" breaker box which takes the electric company panel out of the equation when the solar system is engaged. No solar panels in the locker.

Miscellaneous tools, chop saw, old washer/dryer....he'll do ok but I was glad it wasn't me that got the locker. The mystery boxes were a bust.

That's how it goes sometimes.

More often than not as all newbies learn sooner or later; of course the larger the population base, the better the chances for running into good ones; unfortunately not everyone lives in Dalls/Ft Worth, Los Angeles or New York City.

No - that someone Travis is running also?

No, in regard to "pickin'.com"....as Travis woiuld say ...."just kidding".  Travis commented elsewhere that he would do it if he didn't have so many other things going...including buying lockers again.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Auction Scene #8.....August, 2013

A couple of days late getting this started, but August isn't going anywhere soon, so here it is.

This month holds a fair number of local auctions for me and I'm looking forward to ONE that was put on hold two months ago due to a listing issue. I'm hoping some of my regular associates won't remember this one, but since 4 of us spotted this special unit when it first came up, hope is slim that they will ALL forget about it.

When I was buying a locker a week (9 years ago) I of course got a lot of Christmas stuff. Most of it was low-end and if I got it in January through August I would go through and pick out the best stuff and save it, but the rest went to Goodwill, etc. I just couldn't justify saving it all for 11 months to the next buying season.

Some stuff went well and that's the stuff I saved, but I never really got a SUPER collection of good quality stuff. The other good seller was the really old (1950 and before) and that I sold on eBay.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Metal Milk Jug
« on: August 03, 2013, 12:20:27 AM »
Looks like a lot of people on eBay are putting bright paint jobs with pictures of flowers or cows on them and asking $100+.

Well, not totally accurate, some are asking $30.  More importantly....here's what they are actually selling (or not selling for)....the completeds...

Other Forms of Selling / Store Owners....How are you doing ?
« on: August 01, 2013, 10:05:27 AM »
Several folks on here have recently started stores and there are probably a few others who have never posted, so the question stands.  In the current economy are your thrift stores doing well or ok considering more people might be buying lightly used goods to save money?

Still plugging away at the auctions within 15 miles or so of my home and went to one about 5 miles away yesterday.

Good crowd....maybe 30...9 or so regulars.  None of the regulars bought any of the 11 lockers. Value just wasn't there. Quality of goods at auctions I go to has been LOW for a good 9 months to a year. People who are about to lose their lockers (with better quality stuff) are coming up with payments and clearing out. Meanwhile the marginal lockers (yes, I know you can still make money) are the prevalent kind available.

The prices at the auction were within reason...I guess...but the fact no regulars bought any is a sign. Maybe in my area things are starting to "normalize".

I talked to one regular who had bought one elsewhere for $1,700 and felt good about it. I saw half a dozen large items on his cList offerings and quality was there.  ON THE OTHER HAND, I talked to another regular who has a store who was AT THAT AUCTION and said he didn't see $1,700 in value there. Only time will tell on that one and the  buyer is an honest, regular guy who has admited to his mistakes before...unlike other buyers who have NEVER bought a bad locker or broken even.

Craigslist / Re: Any successful Craigslist sells?

Nice going, Movieman... $33.00 & a few hours time invested to score $480.00 that's terrific!... note to self "keep an eye out for respironic machine"  ;D

The oxygen machines (of several types) can't be sold on eBay, but I've done well with them on cList. Since they can't be sold on eBay I have no problem letting people here know about them. You have to learn about them of course to sell wisely.  I once had a guy drive from Los Angeles to my area (800 mile round trip) to buy one from me for $400. I couldn't believe he couldn't have found it down there, but he claimed not. He had used this particular one with good success in the past and HAD to have it. He made the round trip in one day and I was a happy camper.

Also, that $8 purchase was made at a piece by piece auction. Several people here have decried them for the time they take, but I have done quite well on some things I have bought there and have broken even on others. I once bought a part for $5 (didn't know what it was but it looked high end) and sold it for $185 on eBay. This was before I had an iPad to do remote research while at sales. The part was for a high-end piece of printing equipment.

Weird & Wacky Finds / Re: Opened the box and .... Awww Noooo!

You re-sold a unit you had already scanned over? Seems unethical.

What?  Just because he took out all the best stuff and left the rest for someone else?

Actually, there would be a market for the leftovers, but it would be marginal compared to the goodies that were removed. I didn't look  at the ad but if it wasn't misleading in either text or pictures, it is just another locker up for sale and the fact it was offered online is just another negative in my opinion.

...I've got about 40% of the stuff gone, although the "split" aint 50/50 I'm making a killing...plus he's given me 2 empty rooms to place & sell my storage items out of... life is good.

Sounds like a winner !  More big stuff than I would want to handle, but can't argue with the "green" !  ;D
