New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Storage ideas

I agree with TC not necessary or smart to get yourself in debt before you've even started.

Chef, I guess too late now but who's to say you even like the storage business after buying your first locker, if you don't or if your not succesful all that money is basically wasted.

Start out with a padlock, a flashlight and a bankroll to buy a unit. If you get a big unit you can always rent a home depot truck for $24 for like 2 hours.

UHaul trailers aren't a bad deal either if you already have a suv or truck with a hitch, like $10 for the day no mileage like with trucks

Or worst case scenario make two dozen runs with your suv.

I would laso advise against spending money to get in. If your successful after a few units and like the business then use some of your profits to buy a traile and whatever other supplies you feel you need

As for storage I try to store stuff in my garage and attic above garage. I kind of have the philosophy I'd rather flip things quickly and not get max money than sit on things forever and have to worry about storage. trying to clear out everything i have quickly right now stuff is tacking up in my garage.

truth-or-consequences.com/idiots/zachchild/zachchild.html

Kinda long but a good read, a sellers rant about a buyer and their back and forth emails. Both of em seem like idiots to me.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: R6 motorcycle
« on: August 11, 2011, 05:06:29 PM »
Sounds like you know bikes if you know what parts go for but a tip for anyone out there who doesn't know bikes well. If you happen to just check CL just to get an idea of prices motorcycles are on of those things everyone WAY overprices and winds up comming WAY down on it.

I know its the same to an extent with cars and everything but very much so with bikes. It's almost like people price a bike a grand higher than they expect to get and when your taking about a bike that's normally worth 3k-7k a grand is a pretty hefty chunk percentage wise. Not sure why its that way just th way it is. I used to buy and sell bikes, mostly older goldwings and honda cb750's but also some newer stuff and a few sport bikes.

Another thing, if you don't know how  to work on bikes be prepared to spend a fortune to get one running. Most shops around me charge like $350 for a spring tuneup/oil change which essentially isn't much more than an oil change and making sure your chain is tight if you have a chain driven bike or the shaft dive oil change if you got a shaft drive.

Prett much best case scenario you got a running bike but no title and no key. Your probably looking at some minor work getting the carbs cleaned at very best case scenario so ther's some money gone. New ignition ther's a few hundred more nad plates and retitling probably a few hundred more. When you figure your probably sitting on a bike worth 4k most likely it cuts into your profits.

I've tried to get a few bikes at auctions for myself to ride not even to flip and its not even good prices for that. I think lots of people who don't knwo bikes just see a bike and say hey big ticket item and figure they can make a good buck nomatter what price they get in at, not the case at all.

One other thing to consider. Depending upon what region you in if your in an area that has a real winter plan on getting 15-20 percent less if you sell now vs waiting until next may.

Storage Heroes, like the new post you put up lol. Did some more reading, enjoying your blog. I like the angle you took with the letters, kind of an interesting take on things aside from the normal here's what I found or storage auction tips.

I'll have to start paying closer attention to paperwork, letters, etc, normally pretty much all paper I find immediately goes in the trash without a second look.

If your intersted in doing some guest blogging shoot me a pm I've been slacking on keeping up with my storage auction blog and I been finding yours very amusing. I, been tied up with another blog and a site I'm in the process of setting up to sell copper bullion. I'll give you some backlinks and you can have a free plug for your blog if your interested.

Keep on blogging enjoying reading it

Monkey business. Yeah I used to love to sell at flea markets but it's way too crowded with vendors this year. If you don't get there by like 5am they are out of spots and I have to work at least two saturdays a month these days so don't have the time to commit to a yearly spot where your guranteed a spot.

I have a few other flear markets in the area but one charges $160 for the weekend which is a little high for my blood and it's more high end stuff than my typical household stuff which is the majority of what I have. The other flea market in my area is a ways away.

Anyhow, flea markets havn't been as good this year for me as in  years past, mostly because of working teh saturdays.

I still like to hit the flea market up but a garage sale is so easy and conveneint, no traveling, no waking up early, no unloading and packing up, just sell right out of my garage full of stuff.

jross, now that you mention it i think I do recall you talking about that before although in the past i havn't read the garage sale seciton all that much, ill have to read soem of your old posts for tipsand info on crappy area garage sales though lol.

I live in a pretty ****ty neighborhood, its pretty ghetto, I'm the onlywhite guy on my block. I have had garage sales at previous places I lived and did well, all in nicer neighborhoods but people like going to those b/c nice neighorhoods tend to throw out nice and perfectly good stuff or sell it cheap at garage sales.

Just curious if anyone else lives in the ghetto and has garage sales. Im think I may be in a good area to sell a lot of stuff but really don't want all these people seeing all the stuff I got lol. I'm well armed and have a bulldog/pit mix but I'm not home all the time.

My living situation is temporary I'm going to either sell or rent the place and move on but stuck here for a few more months and dont want to let the summer pass me by without having a few garage sales.

There's a pair of panties sitting in the corner of my garage that's from a unit like 3 years ago. I'm always too lazy just to pick it up and throw it out, it's behind a couch and a bathroom vanity I have out there.

I'm giong to pick it up, with a stick of course lol, and take some pics and put it on ebay

Nasty Old Pair Of Panties "From Storage Auction" and see if it sells lol.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Wish people could just be honest

I suppose this is another topic that basically boils down to we all liked it better before the shows came on and the crowds came out. We kinda dislike newbies a lil bit because they are the reason the game has changed.

That said this is how things are gonna be for the forseeable future and things will probably never go back to like they used to.

Personally I don't really have anything against newbies though I do like the way things were before. As long as people are humble and nice Im happy to lend some advice and help at auctions, what bothers me is the people who show up to their first of second auction thinking they run the place or thinking they are great.

Kind of along those lines was the guy on a storage wars episode a while back who showed up to his first auction and had already decided he was quitting his job and doing this fulltime. He was a bigger dude with a beard.

Anybody get in on this? As a promo to sell the presidential dollar coins the mint was taking credit and debit cards online, selling dollar coins for face value and offering free shipping.

People could then buy up to $1000 at a time which they could then turn right back into the bank and pay off the credit card immediatly all while earning  bunch of credit card points.

The best part is they did this back in 2009 and this is what happened adn they did it again but this time put a $1000 cap on it so you just had to order more times which doesn't cost you any more than ordering in bulk lol.

One guy apparently bought over $325,000 and turned it all back into the bank all while earning 5% cash back from his american express card. I heard another story of a guy who bought over 800K however not sure if taht one is true.

Saw this today. Some guy is selling what he claims to be random or mystery boxes from storage units that are supposedly "unsorted" he has too much to go through.

Expect to get old dishrags, underwear and maybe some tupperware if your lucky lol.
