Since 80% of my flea market stuff is under $5, I would have to say mostly $1 to $2 per item.  It just all depends on what sells that day.  A typical day is 80-$120 profit after food, rent, and stuff.  Some days most of that comes from the toy cars and world money I have.  Those sell at $.50 each or $2 for paper money.

My typical setup is this:

$.25 bin - mostly odds and ends people love to search in.  Draws people in.

$.50 bin - same as above but bigger stuff

$.50 matchbox/hot wheels/toy car bin - sold out 3 times, lucky found a large supply at a yardsale last summer

$.25 - $.50 - world coins -- these cost me only pennies as I buy in bulk for my collection and these are surplus

$2 - world bank notes -- these cost me $.25 each or less.  Lots of interest and many purchases some days.

$2 DVD / CD / Video Games - most of this stuff comes from units or yard sales.  If is yard sale I pay no more then $.50 per video as I buy in bulk.  Use to be a hot seller but has slowed down in last 3 months.

Glass case - has my high end coins, notes, basebal cards, etc.  Will sell something once a month or two.  Mostly a display item to bring people in.  They see the silver and stuff and then end up buying some world coins or other items.

Other tables have everything else I've hauled in that day.  Can be shoes ($5), purses ($5), tools, glasses, plates, who knows what.

I know my profit from the flea is less then most people.  That is mostly due to my lower price items vs others at the flea.  Plus, I only go when I feel like it - not every weekend.  Is difference between hobby and job.

Ya - I understand what your saying alloro.  What really gets me is how fast they put the purse down when I tell them it's a fake.  I get a number of "complements about my honesty".  Don't want those, I want your money :)

I finally just tossed the purses to Goodwill.  Should go in there one day and see how much they sell fakes for.

I did buy 2 $.99 kindle books when I first started.  Still have them on the kindle.  Was nothing on there that I didn't already know or had found out from reading this site.  In fact - if I was writing one of those books I'd focus on more of the selling of the merchandise then the buying.  Give people a feel for what is commonly found in 60% of the units you will see.  What is the best way to get rid of those items and make a profit, etc.

Only thing I keep finding is knock-off purses.  I've had a few of the "duck" purses...don't remember the name I'm a guy.   Have also had a few coach ones that you could tell were fake by the C pattern on them.  There is one in a unit I bought last night I'm 90% sure is fake.

I'm honest with my flea buyers.  I tell them up front I think the purse is a fake.  The only thing that pisses me off about it is instead of the $5 - $10 I'm asking they then want me to sell it for $1.  Yet - some of these same ladies will pay $50 and $100 in the big city for the same purse off a street vendor.  Sure lady - those street vendors are selling $800+ purses for $100 just cuz you look hot.

Shoes and stuff I've never paid much attention to.

Pirated music / movies get tossed in the trash.  Not going to get hit with one of those fines.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #2...February, 2013

Well I was correct - yesterday was just about a circus.  Lots of people at the 3 facility auction this month.  They did a early dec, no jan, and late feb auction.  So they had 114 units listed in the paper.  Told my wife everyone and their kid sister would be there.  Auction day has us 54 units (record), 60+ people (every old and new regular + good mix of newbies), rain/drizzle that let up, cold and windy conditions.  Took us 4 and 1/2 hours to do all 3 locations.

Unit prices were mixed.  A few units that sold undervalue, a mix of fair priced ones, and a bunch of overpriced units.  Units on a whole were poor to mid quality.  It wasn't till the last 5 units of the evening that we had some really nice furniture / whole house type units.  Those were in the 600 range.

My daughter got a crap unit for $10.  Had it at $1 but then a out-of-town thrift store guy that likes to toss his weight around started to bid.  2 matress, crap broken dresser, $5 toaster, a microwave and that is about it.  She didn't let him push her around and she can make a few bucks on the unit.  We had already bought a unit there so will be cleaning place out anyways.

I bought 3 units - 1 for my buddies store and is a mystery.  Could see a few chairs, table, and not much else due to twin mattress in the line of sight.  Also paid $35 for a scrap unit that may or may not be a dud (nice brass/glass 2' table, 2 electric weed whackers, bike w/ missing wheel, and the scrap)  Last unit I bought had 6 matresses in it (bonk head) - and other half of unit was just baskets of cloths, shoes, 5 PS2 games, etc.  Just had a "feel" on this unit for some reason so paid $70 for it.

What was real nice was the guy gave us 2 weeks this time since there was so many units to sale.  Did say he would also take CC this time which made most of us groan.  Final note - one of the ladies is taking over the calling out of the auction.  She isn't as entertaining as the owner but I like her style.  She didn't waste time trying to draw out bids.  It was once, twice,.... sold.  Think the owner slowed her down after the first dozen units a tad but she was still quick.  Plus, she had the helper open up the next unit for sale so the people not interested in bidding could go ahead and look at the next unit for sale.  Sped things up.

Oh that just stinks.  I saw the boxes, the wrap, and the bottles and was hoping they were all new.  Who really puts the bottles back in the boxes and closes them up...and then stores them.

I agree with the plastic to hide the Power5x boxes.  Also, many places would consider that explosive.  The one renters contract that I saw had stuff like that on the prohibited list.

This may of been one of the few times a little name search on your local PD website may of helped.  Of course I hardly ever do it unless have some time to kill myself.  Never find a match.

That was a nice mystery unit for the guy.  I'm like you however - I'd not gone over $150 myself if had no clue what was in the boxes.  In fact my first thought when I saw the way they were wrapped was drugs.

Did the trash bags have lighters or other related items in them?

Your inadvertent clue of course made life easier.  However, narrowed it down even further with the 1st box picture.  You have to do a search on the word.  Don't think I have an exact match.....yet.  May have to do some more searching tonight.

Lol Cobia - and now everyone is looking in my cube to see why I was laughing so hard.   :)

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Won bid then denial purchance

I've had "canceled sells" do to the owner coming in during the auction and paying.  Until you pay for the unit some places will allow that.  We also have one location that has gotten greedy.  They do silent bids.  One of the newer auction guys I know was told he won a unit.  Got a call back 3 hours or so later saying he didn't get the unit.  The owner of the facility decdied to keep the unit.  I suspect it will be back on sale in a few months.

That $5 unit in your picture Movieman I would of bid the $5 on.  I've had some good finds/sales in the under $50 units.  That and my daughter just loves them.

As for a store only open 3 days a week - it is doable.  My buddies store that I help with is only open Thur and Friday 10 - 5 and Sat 9 - 5.  He also has a used car lot 1/2 block away that he works at monday and tuesday.  Wed he will sometimes open if he is there working on inventory or such.  So far they have been open 14 months and are in the black.  Not a bunch of money but between the two it keeps food on the table.  Biggest advantage IMO they have is rent and location.  Rent is $900 month compared to the $1200+ at other locations and they are just outside the city limits on a busy road 1/2 mile before it splits off.  Then a Hardies opened up across from them.  Been in there a few times and heard "we should stop in there" or "look - they have a washer/dryer".

For the most part he has stopped going to auctions as many people bring him stuff to buy and he can pick/choose.

There is enough info in the picture.  Was even MORE info in it till Movieman updated the pictures.  Use the first box picture as it's the best.  That and google will put you right on the money so to speak.

Sent you one back MM.  More I look at the pictures the more I think I've nailed it on the head.  Now - if my math is right for the 1536 items he can get around $3840 - $4608 (non-ebay price).  May just take some time to move it all.  So unless he paid some outrageous price this is one mystery unit that is going to pay well if can move all the items.

Now - I am interested in knowing what was in the bags.

I voted 1.  I may be a member on 2 or 3 but don't ask me what site, my username, or anything.

Only one I post on is this one.

I know one of the old timers use to have a partner.  I think over time one or the other just gets tired of doing it and quits.

I've not really had a partner but I have split a few units with one of my buddies.  Most of the time I've already bought the unit.  I then give him a call if he isn't already at the auction and say I have this unit, this price paid so 1/2 that, want in?  He was "part owner" at my other buddies store.  We would sell everything in the unit at the store and split profit.  If we wanted to keep something for ourselves we had to both agree.  Worked pretty well but he has now quit the store / auctions.

I've split a few other unit cost on specific units.  Normally it's I want only x,y,z items or vice versa.  I get help cleaning unit, get what I want, rest goes to other guy.  Or the flip of that where they get what item(s) they wanted specificly and help me clean unit, with everything else going to me.  Lower cost of items for labor equity so to speak.

I like Cobia's guess but I think I know what they are.  Will PM you Movieman.

I could see a mystery unit like this going for 400-500 easy in my area.
