It was dumb!  Not sure I understand the point. So he goes to look at a guys collection, goes out and finds a buyer to bring back and the buyer and seller work out a deal. So...he's a broker now?  Pretty boring.

eBay / Re: Shipping Debacle
« on: March 19, 2014, 09:15:17 PM »
I sell a ton of stuff (ok maybe not a ton but a lot) and often sell with shipping calculated by EBAY based on dimensions, weight and the buyers zip code. The only times I've been bitten has been my own fault, like wrong weight or didn't put in dimensions and the item is oversized. Or I did put everything in correctly but the last item I listed was free shipping and I forgot to uncheck the free shipping box so the new item gets listed as free shipping. Hate when I do that! Anyway, as long as you put in correct information you should be fine. I also put in a handling fee to help cover my materials costs. Not a huge amount, usually $2-$3 unless it's a big item or an item that will require a lot of packaging materials or a special box and then I might add $10+

Craigslist / Re: Craigslist Crazies...March, 2014 Edition

This reminds me of a guy that wanted to buy a trunk. It was a 20 mile drive for him (40 mile round trip) so he asked the measurements to make sure it was a good size for him. The measurements were in the ad but ok...told him the measurements. He comes to see it and says "oh, it's much bigger than I expected. I don't think it will fit". WTF we told you the measurements! Waste of time...

What's it Worth?? / Re: Mushroom stoneware set?

Looks like Arnel's (or Arner's...it seems to get listed either way). Any markings on the bottom of any pieces? Probably 1970's. Might get $50-$100 on EBAY although no fun to ship! Not a common enough item to break the pieces up so you would need to sell the complete set.  I'd take it to a local auction house and see what happens.

Hmmm, lets see....

Tacky Joe
Big John
Safeway John
Liar Liar
Les (Reminds me of Les on Hardcore Pawn)
Rubber boots
Fupa (never mind)

Used to be a lot more but as we learned everyone's names we forget the nicknames.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Deposits taken from attendees?
« on: March 02, 2014, 01:52:53 AM »
Went to one in Northern Cal a couple years back that was an old moving and storage company that went out of business and the auction was for 200 storage crates that were unclaimed over the past 30-40 years. They required 100.00 deposit to get a number. The deposit was returned when you turned in your number. Didn't seem to hold anyone back. Crowd was huge...but then it was 200 units so there was pretty much something for everyone.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Personal items

I try to return photos and personal papers but definitely have my limits regarding how much work I will put into sorting out their personal stuff. If I find a box full of family photos while at the unit then yes it goes back. If I find a packet of photos mixed in with a bunch of junk mail I might just toss it in the dump pile. And, like Travis, I am not driving back to return stuff if it's out of my way. I have held on to stuff for a month to return the next time that site has an auction. I also consider how much care the owner took in storing the stuff. I am more likely to return stuff if it looks like the owners cared enough to pack and label it. Basically if you treat your personal stuff like trash so will I. I had one where the owner was a woman with a 21ish year old son and 2 year old grandchild. The son had recently been killed by police officers in a gang related incident. All the son's stuff from his childhood were in the unit...trophys, school photos, yearbooks...also his baby's toys and baby photos. I really felt for that woman and really went out of my way to give her all of her memories back. I'm pretty sure she was homeless or close to it though so no clue if she had anywhere to put the stuff.

Like everyone else I avoid mattresses if possible. Visible mouse / rat droppings make me think twice. I'm not a big fan of produce boxes or stolen boxes. By stolen I mean those plastic USPS boxes and the plastic flip top boxes with store names on them (Safeway, Rite-Aid...)  Seems like whenever I see a bunch of boxes like that the stuff inside doesn't amount to much. I guess if you are low enough to steal boxes from the grocery store your possessions aren't generally worth much. And the produce boxes always seem to be clothes and cheap household stuff. I think it is because the people that use them are quite often the field workers who just don't have high end stuff. I prefer boxes that people had to pay for. I also avoid units with lots of press board furniture.

I think it would go $1000-$1200 pretty easily in my area. Maybe more. Those that said $200 really surprised me. People in my area pay $200 for a tiny locker filled with a few garbage bags.

I like that show. I think it's fun to see what they pick up. They definitely don't pick up the types of items I would but it does make me think about looking at different things.
