Wouldn't classify her as the worlds dumbest...but one of the many inconsiderate people that are out their.  Too bad she wasn't in my area.  She would of come out of the auction to find a ticket on her window for parking in a handicap zone.  We have bike cops that go from shopping center to shopping center just writing these types of tickets all day long.  I love it since my grandmother was in a wheel chair and many times it was people like this lady that would prevent us from parking.  No big deal when it was me with them as I could push the chair.  When was just my mother and grandmother it's a big deal.

My monday auction was canceled which really sucked as I was working nights and could actually go to a 9:30 auction for a change.  Missed today's auctions due to work.  Thursday is my big caravan.  Just hope they have more units then did last month.  Friday also has a decent size auction but doubtfull I can go due to work.  Will report back thursday night now that auction goes.

I love finding stamps in units since they are just like cash to me.  Found a book of old .34 stamps in a $27 unit the other day.

Good luck with the unit Movieman.  Let us know what else the boxes contain.

Every auction I have been to in GA already has the owners lock cut off and the facility lock on it.  Some even have tags in addition to the lock.  Don't know about Athens but it may of just been normal or it could be fishy.  I know the last silent auction I went to there were only 4 units up.  The lady told us up front the first three were bad, with the fourth being decent/good.  I didn't see anything wrong with that.  As I know for a fact that they open the units, take a picture with a sign stating the day, unit #, and owner.  Then they close the unit and put their lock on.  If a person is active military they put their lock on but don't sell the unit which I thought was cool of them as many single guys get deployed on short notice and the locker is easy to forget about.

That really does sound like a "the fish was <----------> this big" type of story.  In any case he must not really have a clue what he is doing.  Even in a unit that looks like it's mostly trash you can still make some money.  Out of 8 units I've only made 1 trash run so far, and that was 1/2 full of my own trash from a re-roofing.  If he has purchased 8 units and has not at least made 1/2 of his money back he needs to just quit now.  Or better yet you should offer to clean up the locker for him and make some free money for yourself.  I love free and $1 lockers since they are easy money makers.  Your not going to make much money but every little bit helps.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Gotta love a good business locker..

Sounds like a great buy.  You just never know with those lockers.  I know a resteraunt locker that everyone came to see a few months back turned out to be a bust.  Another unit that looked to be a closed business turned out to be more paper, receipt books, and the like then profit.  You just never can tell.

I hope you do well with the locker but I'll be surprised if you make 3-5k on it.  Sports cards, comics, and other collectibles are mostly in the toilet currently.  When people can't pay the rent, or buy food, the hobbies get put on the backburner.  A guy down from me at the flea this weekend had a large sports collection.  He drew crowds to look but not many buyers.

It may pay to get that promo slabbed and graded if you think it's worth 100 or more.  That way the price for it will rise.

Good Luck

Each state has different laws.  For the majority of the states what a facility should be doing is removing the owners lock, opening the unit, take a picture and/or description of the unit for records, close and lock the unit with their lock, and then send a certified letter to the last known address of the owner.  In the legal notices many companies put the unit # for auction, maybe full name or first initial, last name, or just the last name of the ownder.  Then a small description of contents.

If the facility uses a auction company the auction company will put breakaway tabs in addition to the facility locks on doors after they have inspected the unit.

Very very few facilities rummage through the locker.  Those that do you can quickly tell and avoid.

This isn't Auction Hunter or Storage Wars.  Please don't come into this thinking you are going to buy a unit and make 4x your money.

BTW - welcome to the boards Mike.

The Lounge / Re: Beckett Online Price Guide
« on: November 07, 2011, 08:23:02 PM »
Only issue with the magazines are they are limited in space.  So they mostly have the more current sets and sub-sets.  I currently have cards for just about everything.

Magic, Warcraft, All sports (baseball, basketball, hockey, football, soccer), comic, various non-comic, etc.

I do ebay price a few "key" names or anything someone put in a hardcase or such.  Mostly everything just keeps getting put in card boxes and added to all the others in my trunk.  I figured it would be just as easy to load the cards in excel or access and then cross-ref with a price guide later.

Gives me yet another thing I can tinker with once I get tired of my current project.

That is a nice ROI.  I have found I make my money back and/or some money from the under $100 lockers then my other lockers.

Good hunting this week.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Atlanta area auctions
« on: November 07, 2011, 07:02:38 AM »
I'm not in Atlanta (but will be up there Saturday for a concert) so take this with a grain of salt.  Most of your auctions are going to have 20+ people at them.  In my area we have anywhere from 12 to 20 bidders, not counting people.  The shows make it look simple and easy and thus more and more people come out to bid and drive the prices up.

While Atlanta has a huge population you also have a mega-ton of storage lockers to pick from.  So the size crowd and prices of say Gwinett area may be 1/2 that of like Covington or Rock City.  Your best bet is to find a few aucitons near you and just go to them.  Only take money that you can afford to loose if you want to try your hand at this.

If you don't want to use your time searching for auctions you can check out Drew's site.  He does all the legwork for you and sends emails out to his subscribers.  I don't use him since not in Atlanta but have heard good things about his site.  Also, he is the reason we have these forums.

Well some places go ahead and put their lock on and leave the other lock until it goes up for auction then they remove the owners lock and put a tab on w/ their lock.  So what prob happened if it was just 1 unit like that was the owner called and "gave-up" the unit.

Flea Markets / Re: Miscellaneous Flea Market Stories
« on: November 06, 2011, 06:01:31 PM »
Well this weekend was my first try at the flea market.  Had planned on just Saturday but dad had paid for both days so went back today.  Most people didn't bother to negotiate or anything.  A few of the mexicans did but I'm cool with that.  I for sure try to get a lower price when I buy.  Today someone was passing fake $20s.  The flea kept telling vendors over the loud speaker to check their $20s.  I purchased a pen/light just to do that just in case.

Only 1 story from this weekend.  It involves an asian (think chinese) lady.  Yesterday she liked a red (lodon fog) mid length jacket that I had for $10.  She offered me $1.  I was like no thanks.  She came back a few mins later and offered $2.  I was still like no thanks.  So today she comes back to my table.  I suck with names but am pretty good with faces so I recognized her.  I figured she would go for the coat again.  Instead she starts looking at this size 9 gold ring (still has original tag that says US Gold, Size 9, $79.95 on it).  She tried it on, turned it over and over, played with it for a good 5 mins and wanted me to sell it for a $1.  She then picks up a $1 clutch, and 3 items from my quarter bin and wants it all for $1.  I counter with a $1.50 and she can get another quarter item.  She hems and haws, paws through everything in the bin, tries to say a tape measure is broken, etc.  She finally pays up and scooper her pile into a bag.  I notice that in the process she also helps herself to another quarter item.  One of those horoscope keychains.  I just shook my head at her and explained everything to my daughter who was watching her also.  Not 5 mins later she comes back.  I quickly come around the table to hover over her.  She picks up the tape measure and another item which I sold to her for a quarter.  Should of ran her off but the quarter items I put up there just to attract interest and wasn't too worried about getting stolen.

Flea Markets / Re: Flea Market Revenue ?

Well made $76.25 today so the two days after expenses was $137 profit.  Crowds were about the same today as yesterday.  Don't know if it was due to being 5 degrees warmer or what.  I was surprised actually.  I figured would struggle until after chruch since in the bible belt.  When in fact I made most of my money before noon and after 2.

I in fact may of had most of my items under-value.  I know some things seemed to go quick and to other vendors.  But, I'm ok with that.  In the last week I've made $200 so not counting items that I've kept I'm only $197 in the red now, with a good amount of inventory still.  If I include the items I've kept I'm in the black.

3 safes in 7 lockers and all visable is just very long odds.  Sounds like your right and it's staged auctions.
