Flea Markets / Re: Flea Market Revenue ?
« on: November 05, 2011, 04:51:49 PM »
Doing my first flea market sale.  Father messed up and rented the 10x10 for Sat and Sun.  Cost per day is $12.  Made my $24 cost back and $60 so far.  Will have to see if do good or not Sunday.  Weather has turn chilly so not as many people as I had wished.

What was strange was none of my Christmas stuff is moving yet.  Many odds and ends did but not Christmas.

I'm so thankful that I've yet to attend an auction with a real auctioneer and the "buyers premium".

Thanks for the links.  I'm finding the auctionbytes website to be very informative.  Will be bookmarking that one.

Storage Auctions "In The News" / Re: Man Finds Wad of Cash in Old Suitcase
« on: November 02, 2011, 03:30:40 PM »
Never under-estimate the stupidity of people.  One of the regulars was talking about a locker he bought a year or so ago.  He paid like $200 for the locker and found $600 in cash inside the locker.  He was like, "wouldn't the person that put $600 in cash in the locker use it to pay for a $75 a month locker".

It's those finds that really set the hooks in.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: refinishing furniture
« on: November 02, 2011, 03:26:25 PM »
Refinishing a table, chair, or such is more time intensive then money.  Many times just removing the old paint and putting a new varnish on the item will make it look better.  I have a older drop-leaf table currently that has a buildup of green tarnish or something in one of the joints.  Just going to take some furniture cleaner and polish to it.  Will try and remember to do before / after shots.

Depending on what you are doing the tools you need are:
paint remover
stain
brushes
drop cloth
sand paper
hand or power sander
wood filler
lots of elbow greese

You can google and/or buy books on refinishing.

I always hope to find a pistol or coins to add to my collection.  I never count on it but am waiting for a nice surprise.  Jewelry is always good since it can pay for your locker.  I'm getting closer with each unit.  Started out with empty jewelry boxes, then started to get watches, then costume jewelry, and finally a ring with a US Gold tag on it.  Only downside is it's gold plated (magnet sticks to it) instead of 10k or 14k.  But I'm getting closer with each unit.

Paintings I like - purchased one just for the painting I saw to put in my house.

Other nice finds even if not worth much are:
Collections (comic, card, etc.)
Old Game Systems w/ games  -- busted N64 w/ no games so far
Tools
Weapons (all sorts of various things found so far)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: There are is couple that buys units
« on: November 02, 2011, 03:10:07 PM »
To me that is just nuts.  Of course I already had a truck and 10' utility trailer to my name.  If I didn't it would be all small units for me.  I do this part-time but try very hard to keep my cost low.  I keep track of how much I pay for a unit and how much I've sold.  I don't include items I keep for myself.  Nor do I keep track of gas since many times it's either on my way or I'm spending time with my oldest daughter doing this.

Like Cobia my biggest issue is space.  While I have a good amount of it in 2 sheds/barns.  Currently nothing is really organized and I am sitting on alot of metal waiting for the price to go back up.  Hopefully I clean some of it out this weekend at either a yard sale or the flea market.

Well had the silent auction on the 29th of Oct.  Out of the almost 20 units in 3 locations we were down to 4 units in 1 location on Saturday.  One very nice units, two blah units, and one that no one bid on and it was a silent auction.  Crowd was lower then before but still a good dozen people.  Between saturday 5th and friday 11th there are 7 different auctions.  Only going to be able to make 2 or 3 but am hopefull.

Man - wish I could luck up on some auctions like that.  Even my best auction had 6 bidders.  I'm with everyone else.  You stay home and send her out.  She seems to have the better luck.

Did a quick search but didn't find anything right off.  That is a cool painting however.  I'd most likely of kept in and hung it on the wall with my beach/ocean paintings.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Another question????
« on: November 02, 2011, 01:21:21 PM »
You would have to look in the laws in Texas.  For vehicles it is possible to get a salvaged title.  You have to first get the vehicle declared abandoned, etc.  This isn't Auction Hunters however, and the chances of you finding a car, etc. is very very slim.  Parts and pieces to a motorcycle or maybe even a non-running cycle are better odds.

Guns are the same thing.  For us in GA you don't have to register the firearm.  However, it would be very smart to have a police officer run the serial # to make sure the weapon isn't stolen before you sale it.  I know California has to go through a registered dealer for all sales.  Each state is different.

Unless you are real lucky in your first year you will not run into this issue.  I know people that have been buying lockers for 10+ years and can count on 1 hand the number of guns they have found.

Be more concern about other weapons like brass knuckles, chucks, etc., if those can be sold.  I've gotten a slapjack, pair of brass knuckles, a homemade pair of metal chucks, a set of wooden chucks, 2 thorwing stars, short sword, short spear, various pocket knives, etc.

Most places cut off the lock of the owner and put their own lock.  Some places in addition put on a little one-use breakaway tag.  It all depends on the laws in your state.  I would say 90% or more of the storage places you go to do not go into or through the unit.  They just pop the lock, do a sight inventory the way you do, and then put their lock and tag on.  One place near me takes a picture w/ a piece of paper showing the date, location, name on unit, and unit #.  Each facility is a little different.

You will quickly learn if a place is know to either stage units or search them.  If you go to a place that many of the regulars don't go to and it's the only auction going on that day...that can be a clue.  If the unit is old with dust covering most items but you see clear spots that can clue you in.  If every box you see looks to be open, tape (if taped) cut, etc. that can be a clue.  Many times it's the owner that has come in and grabbed what they want and discarded the trash.  Very few times is it the facility.

It only takes 1 bad apple to give the whole industry a bad wrap.  For myself I've not had a problem like this.  But I keep my eyes and ears open.

Lol - that is funny.  In my last unit I bought the "teacher" unit I found a two boxes full of yard sale items with prices already on them.  I had to laugh at what they wanted for the stuff.  Guess they had a school yard sale and this lady stored all the leftovers.

Have one auction Saturday that is a silent bid.  Called yesterday and she said it looks like most of the people are going to pay up.  Was 23 people listed for 28 lkrs.  When called I was told the 3 units at the first facility may pay up today.  The other two locations had 5 at one and 4 at the other.  So even if the 3 don't pay that is over 1/2 the lockers paying up.

Well I do keep most of the tools  ;)

I put the Buddah up on CL for $25.  You can buy it from various places online from $27 - $35 plus tax and S&H.
