Storage Auctions "In The News" / Re: This is REALLY BAD news!!
« on: October 27, 2011, 07:47:54 PM »
Ya - my father and I was just talking about this law yesterday.  I was like you got to be kidding me when he told me.  I figure it will also be used soon to try and do a sales tax or income tax to those people at yard sales / flea markets and such.

Really hope the law is overturned as it will set a bad example.  With more banks now charging fee's to use your debit/credit card, some people are going back to a cash economy.

Lol acman - ya I know I keep too much stuff.  Or my wife/kids keep too much stuff.  But then again I don't do this for a living.  Long as I have what I call my "gambling money" I'll buy lockers.  Once that is out I'm done till get more.  Is like I tell my oldest daughter.  Once the money is gone it's gone.  So if she wants to keep doing auctions with me she has to help sell stuff and only keep specific stuff.  So the electric globe Buddah is up for sale despite both girls wanting to keep it.

Don't feel bad we all do that.  Least yours was only a $40 mistake and not a $180 like mine.  You may even be able to make a profit depending on how the cloths sale.

Glad you are getting some return on investment.  My one unit I thought would be a "whole life" or "family" unit turned out to be a dud.  Furniture, fridge, vac, steam cleaner, etc. and a ton of boxes in a 10x30.  Was all cloths and such as they had an apartment fire.

Keep us informed on how well you do.  It's always nice to read how others are doing for a quick pick-me-up.

Many places don't charge a deposit.  Or only if you win do you pay a refundable deposit.  Now, if you can't afford to loose the money you are spending don't be doing this.  Like anything when you first start out you are more likely to loose money then make money.  Some people get lucky the first time out, while many don't.  Just a word of caution.

Not all area's do the swap meet thing however.  I know in my area it is either the flea market or yard sale.  Twice a year the local army post has a huge yard sale but the fee's will kill you.  The local county has one also but not sure what the fee will be next year for that.

You should be able to pay the fee and get a salvaged title.  Only motorcycle I've seen so far is a little battery operated kids one and a Harley Davidson seat.

I'm a poor example as I do this part-time and mostly for myself (ie items I want to keep).  As such I've purchased 8 lockers for a total so far of $808 spent.  I have only found cash, gift cards, stamps, or sold for $388.72 so I'm in the red for $419.28.

Now as far as the regulars in my area that do this full time.  I mean buy, sort, do flea market & auction sales, etc. they do pretty well.  Most of the regulars come in two sorts.  Those that are retired and do this as a way to keep busy.  They sale at the flea market and at auctions.  None of them get rich but they do come back every month and have been doing this for years.  The other group are the regular auction/store buyers.  They buy multiple lockers each week, have a crew, a physical location to sale, etc.  I don't know their figures of course but they seem to do well.

eBay / Re: Ebay Shipping via USPS Flat Rate
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:36:40 PM »
The item was delivered that I know.  It just was never scanned at the house.  Last entry was the scan at the post office that it was heading out for delivery.  I got feedback on ebay is how I know it got delivered.  Called my local post office and he was like you will have to call them.

I know from past experience that if the carrier is a sub or new there is no telling what may happen.  We had ordered some stuff from Vexcon for our daughter who loves the Billy exterminator show.  We tracked the package every day and knew when it was to be delivered.  Well per the tracking # it was delivered to our house.  We searched everywhere for it as many times they just drop and go.  Come to find out it was a sub driver who marked the package as delivered before she even left the post office and then delivered our package to the local medical prison.  We got the package in time for daughters b-day party but my wife was very pissed off.

I still use the USPS for almost all of my shipping.  I know those men and women work hard to get me my mail each day and I like to support them back.

Good idea ChefJ - didn't think about it.  I just built in the shipping, least amount of profit I wanted, and fee's in my asking price.  The item sold so I was happy.  Even w/ tracking however I had a 14 day hold on my cash.  USPS just now updated the tracking as being delivered 5 days after I got my money.

It's amazing that I paid for tracking and signature confirmation and the letter I get back finally from the USPS is that they were unable to locate any delivery info.

Garage Sales / Yard Sale Prices
« on: October 22, 2011, 06:34:18 PM »
My daughter should be done with soccer and everything else on the weekends at the end of the month.  So I'm hoping to do our first yard sale to unload all the inventory I've gotten in the last two months.  I have a ton of cloths, books, music items (Cds, tapes, and records), VHS tapes and DVDs, and all sorts of odds and ends.  I was wondering what some of you price your stuff at?  I was thinking for myself in a town outside of a city next to a military base I'd use the following:

older paperback books - $.50
newer paperback books - $1
VHS / tapes / records - $.25
CDs - $1
DVDs - $1 - $5
baby cloths - $.50
kids cloths - $1
adult cloths (shrits) - $2
adult cloths (pants) - $4

Just some general ideas.  Figure if I can come up with a general price list it would save me time from trying to mark everything w/ a price.  Things like the furniture, weapons, and such I'd price seperate.  Figure if I make $200 I'm doing great, $400 would put me back in the black even after keeping a ton of stuff.

I'd call an hour before the auction to see if everyone has paid up or not.

Most places around here have the blurp in the paper that they can refuse a bid.  I've yet to see it happen however.  Most locations just want the lockers cleaned out.  As one of the managers told me it cost them like $600 just to run the newspaper ad they must by law.  A buck a unit was great.  I'd of loved it.

Boxlot - don't get discouraged.  It's a little bit of a balancing act at first.  You don't want to spend to much or just not sure about your ability to sell xyz item so you don't bid.  But, due to not bidding you may be passing up some nice units.  What I did in June to pop my cherry so to speak was purchase a locker I wanted the stuff in for myself.  It was a small 5x5 indoor unit with about 1 and 1/2 truckloads of stuff.  Took me an hour to clean out w/ sweeping.  That same day I purchased my second unit due to my wife's prompting.  Again it was stuff she & (later my mother) wanted...plus it had a lockbox.  Even now most of the lockers I buy are ones I want an item or two out of.  Only 2 lockers have been on speculation.

Any of the auction whales can be retards or they can be great.  One of our local whales everyone jokes with, laughs at, etc.  Only time you don't like him is during the bidding.  As one of my girls asked about where one of my friends were, I laughed and said during the auction you have no friends.

As for the original topic - I would take the auction with the most units 2 hours or so before you leave for them.  City auctions will have more units and happen more often.  You can find good or bad stuff in both.
