General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Two auctions today and no lockers for.
« on: October 22, 2011, 03:19:45 PM »
Well I've passed on some $1 and $5 units since didn't see anything of value or that I liked.  I have cleaned out a locker that I got for free just for the metal shelf.  Of course I had just won a locker right next to it.  I'll risk $10 or less on a trash locker but only if I'm already going to be at that facility and the locker don't stink to bad.

If you buy a large unit or stuff that has a ton of heavy items in it just talk to the local manager if it's the regional or state manager doing the auction.  Many times the person doing the selling will say 2 days to a week.  Where once he is gone if you ask the local person he may give you an extension.  I found this out the hard way.  Passed on a nice full unit that I liked as it was a ton of boxes, totes, and some tools.  It sold for $250 or something like that.  I didn't bid as we only had 2 days to clean it out and I had work.  Mentioned it to one of the regulars and he was like once the regional guy is gone you could of talked to the local guy and he would of given you a week or more.  Depends on if they have other lockers that size to sale.

For me it's about 1 in 4 units.  I'll get a few toys, cloths, etc. but not a ton of it.  My latest unit had 2 strollers, toys, kids cloths, etc.  I mostly seem to find units with a freaking ton of cloths and paper.  I keep receipts for a year or two but after that I burn them.  I've found stuff from 10 years ago.....

As for car seats and cribs I just toss them.  In GA they passed a law about those two I think.  For me it's just not worth the risk.  Figure I can sale the strollers but after I check the make/model for a recall.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What i sthe average cost you spend
« on: October 22, 2011, 03:02:05 PM »
Hmm - for me I don't really calculate things since I do this as a hobby.  I'll be doing my first dump run this week.  Can't calculate the cost since it is going to be a mix of unit trash (from 8 different units), shingles from a re-roofing of the shed, and other misc trash from around the house.  If I had to do an approx it would be:

$75 week for 1 tank gas.  For most part the auctions / winning units are on my way to/from work.  Was 1 week I actually had to do an extra fill-up that week due to a ton of running around and even part of that was a trip to my sisters house.

Storage - $0 -- have 2 barns/sheds that I have all my junk and now storage buys in.

Labor - $0 -- I stay to small units or units I can clean myself w/ the appliance dolly.  If more then that call father or brother-in-law.

If I actually start to make money doing this or father starts to do it full-time after he retires yet again then we will keep tallies and such.  Currently I only keep a buy / sale excel file that mostly stays in the red.  All the things I keep I don't calculate as a sale unless it's cash.  With most units I buy to keep then sale.

Hmm - that would sound fishy to me.  I can see walking into the unit.  We have a facility here that allows us to walk in.  But to not see at least one washer/dryer out of 2 dozen unit is a stretch.  Sounds like they may of taken all the metal and such out.  Did any of the units have alot of dust?  Is the floor clean but the other items really dusty.  That can be a tip off.

That is a decent locker for a nice price.  I agree with jrossjr that the clubs should fetch 1/2 your price paid or may even turn a profit.  It all depends on if a complete set, # of golfers in your area, etc.  The china cabinet is a iffy.  They don't sell well in my area.  Many of the regulars complain about it also since we have seen at least 1 in every 10 or so lockers for some reason this month.  The walker can sell.  Xmas tree's are iffy for me also.  Good luck to you.

For the most part the answer is no.  If you find contraband you just call the local police to come and do a recovered property.  They give you a receipt for the items and take them to be destroyed or what not.  They will ask you a few questions, take down your driver license #, etc. and that be it.  I had to do that recently for a bunch of SSN cards and 5 credit cards from the same bank but different names.  None of them matched the last name of the unit renter.  I do suggest keep good records if you purchase multiple units.  I write down the date, place, and unit # on each box I pull out of a unit.  That way if I find something I can seperate that stuff from my other units.

The big issue would be if you had "BOXES" of drugs and such.  I always take a quick look in boxes and bins even if don't dig right away for that.

If you are worried call your local police department.  They can give you guidelines.  Unless you have an arrest record for drugs or such the average citizen is pretty well covered.

If it's not a credit card I check them out.  Found a Lowe's merchant card with 6.87 on it.  I check each and every gift card that I find.  Have a dillards card I have to take to the store to see if it has any cash on it.  Doubt it but next time I'm at the mall is worth a check.

Sounds like the type of unit I stay away from.  I just don't have room for furniture and those TVs would cost me $10 each to dispose of if they don't work.

Hope you do well with the unit however.  May the unit fairy leave you a goodie or two behind sofa #1.

The pod auctions do normally bring in some major cash like everyone has said.  Only been one in my area and I didn't get to go.  You can get them to deliver the POD to a location but you got to pay of course and basicly rent the POD for it to be delivered.

Lol - looks like some nice auctions if they all come up.  But what the hell would I do with a vending machine??????

Good luck if you go.

I know it's happened to many more then a few times.  Either I just don't have the cash for a locker or I like many items but don't have the place or time for the rest.  Even today I saw a really good locker with lots of heavy tools and such but only had $400 in cash as I've purchased 4 units in the last week.  Unit sold for $520 (silent bid).  For myself if there are a matress/boxspring and lots of furniture I mostly pass on the unit no matter how much I like it.  Don't have the time or storage space to deal with lots of furniture.  Once you build up contacts and such to move things like that you can jump on them.  Till then you have to decide on price vs your time & effort vs profit.

For myself if the unit has more then 1 piece of furniture that I can't unload unless it goes for a really nice price I'll skip it.  With the heavy hitters we have around here most of those units go for $300+ anyways.

#5 sounds about correct - I paid $175 for a 5x5 that had a guitar showing.  Other lockers with them go for higher in your $300 range.  Who ever got the weights for $1 was lucky.  He can make money just scrapping the stuff.  I will toss out a $5 bid for scrap many times.  As for your second location that is about average now a days.  In my area we have many $200-$300 lockers but full house types go for $500 - $1k.  Depends how many of the auction house / pawn shop / thirft store people are at the auction.

974
That is going to be an interesting auction.  Wish it was close to me I'd go just to watch.

Dang Movieman all the nice lockers must be out in Cally.  I've only seen 3 really nice lockers out of a good 100+.

As for the coins you already have some good info.  For the common wheat cents you can make $2-4 a roll pretty easy.  I buy them at the local flea at $2 a roll.  Most of the guys try to sell them for $4+.  It all depends on your area.  People buy them by the pound on ebay all the time.

The steel cent I'd sell for $1 at a yard sale if it is in a 2x2 already.  Some person will buy it for a starter collection.

As for auctions - went to a silent bid auction today that had 6 units up for bid.  Was 9 of us bidding.  Only one pretty good unit with some heavy duty tools.  One of the former owners was there telling everyone a sob story.  His stuff was mostly junk imo and only good for scrap.
