The Lounge / Re: How's everyone doing?

Yep, 2016 was a really bad year for me as well. Won't go into details. Trying to make this year better but the "game" (storage auctions) is still tough.

No cable for me either, but a friend told me things are a little more realistic now. Showed them buying junk units for less then $100

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: When do YOU cut your losses?
« on: June 11, 2017, 08:56:19 PM »
It depends on how much I have invested, if the unit the item came from is all ready in profit, & whats the most the item will realistically bring compared to how much storage space it takes up. A standard piece of furniture that wont bring $50 or more is gone after the first run through the flea market. The more space it takes up, the more inclined I am to chit'can it.

Generally, tax season is the best time to sell furniture, especially your nicer pieces. Tax season was really flat this year for furniture though. Don't know what's up with that.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Personal documents?
« on: June 11, 2017, 08:45:07 PM »
Yeah, in the "good ole days" I use to shred or burn important documents. Now, like everything else we, see so much of it & time is money so it just all goes in the recycling bin. More & more facilities don't even want to take back the personal items. There is only one chain that asks anymore to leave the personals & half the time or more I forget to do that. I never have a manager ask me about personals i've forgotten to bring back.

Uh, where I live that's a negatory. You can "gift" them though.

I'm of the opinion that the storage auction TV shows have turned the industry completely upside down! We've been waiting for things to get back  to the "good ole days", but I don't think it will ever be the same again. Sure , the number of people coming out to auctions has dropped back to near normal ( I remember a few years ago an auction with 350 bidders!) But other changes continue making this business more challenging then it use to be. Oh, I'm back, anybody miss me?  :93:

What's it Worth?? / Re: From a newbie about what might be a good buy

Box units have become less profitable over the last several years and the titles on the boxes less trustworthy, except the ones that say "yard sale" & "goodwill", believe those!

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: How much money do you bring?

So many facilities accept credit cards now there is no need for me to take a load of cash to auctions anymore and I actually seek out the auctions that accept cards and avoid cash only auctions.

1. Yes

2. Too long

3. Best piece of advice, DON'T!

4. Second best piece of advice before you start, either reduce your living expenses to zero or start with 1 million dollars in the bank!

5. Third best piece of advice (maybe first), if you have enough capital to invest in ANY other venture then start there first! Even starting a restaurant or a used car lot is probably a wiser venture then storage auctions. Most MLM businesses are probably wiser then storage auctions.

Some things I have noticed:

The more diversified the community the more likely you are going to see every type of quality unit no matter what the local neighborhood of the facility is. Meaning in a economically and culturally diverse city you are more likely to see a great unit at a facility in a poor part of the city. In areas that have a more homogeneous economic and cultural environment, your less likely to see a great unit even if the facility is in a fairly good part of town.

Facilities near commerce parks, commercial zones, etc. tend to have more business owned units.

Facilities with cheap rent, few amenities, and little security tend to have junky units.

Facilities in low land areas, covered in shade, lots of trees overhead, poor drainage; tend to have problems with mold.

80-90% of units will have contents of a typical American household in various degrees of quality. Look around your house and what you see is most likely what you will find in these units. Used furniture, used clothing, used appliances, used tools, scrap materials from home improvement or lawn & garden projects, recreational items (toys, books, movies, bicycles, etc.) paperwork & garbage.

I've not watched an episode of Storage Wars in years until just two days ago I watched some online. Just couldn't believe the BS horsesh*t of how they were finding $1000-$5000 items in the very back to save their a$$es on the units.

Yes, people bid that high at some auctions I go to. No, your not gonna find great items that don't fit the overall "look" of the unit very often. Maybe once or twice a year that happens, not every damn unit!

Typically if there is great stuff hidden in back, some of it is in plain view up front and off to the races we go!!!

Saturday auctions, especially ones listed on AuctionZip, are miserable. 40-60 people on average. Weekend warriors. Especially bad around tax refund season.

copy that.

Weird & Wacky Finds / Re: Opened the box and .... Awww Noooo!

Son, your not a storage auction hero until you've had to "two-finger" pick through the entire contents of a an HIV positive intravenous drug users unit. The kind where the owner was nice enough to leave used needles in every furniture drawer, in every other box, randomly thrown about.

Nothing says your in for a fun day like doing the initial clean out and seeing needles falling of boxes. The real fun comes about 1/4 or 1/2 way through when you start finding the HIV meds or the Health Department records.

I've had THREE of these little gems so far in my illustrious career, so suck it up! I'll grab used *****s all day long rather then deal with the aforementioned unit.  :72:
