Picker's Paradise / Re: Ranch Sale #1...junk and treasures

Man alive - wish we had something like that.  I'd spend a few hours going over all of it and return on the last day for super deals.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Garage/Yard Sale Leftovers
« on: October 26, 2013, 07:07:12 PM »
There is many people in my area that advertise "buy all your leftover yard sale items".  See the signs on trucks, on craiglist, etc.  For myself I start in the morning and keep trying till noon when most yard sales are done.  For the most part it just all depends on the seller.  If they want the stuff gone and you come in and offer X for a bunch of stuff they will take it.  If they LOVE their stuff they don't take any offers except retail or even higher.

Now - we have many people bring leftover stuff to the store for us to buy.  We love this as we get to pick and choose what we want, and pay the price we want.  Don't get to buy every time but 9 out of 10 people that come in sell to us at our prices.

eBay / Re: Learn your shipping options <story>
« on: October 26, 2013, 06:54:26 PM »
Lol - always check your options on shipping.  For small stuff the first class, ebay labels are perfect.  Even in the flat rate items - sometimes a Region flat rate is cheaper than the small / mid / large flat rate depending on where the item is going.  I sold some new cast iron gas stove grills on ebay.  First class due to weight was more expensive than the flat rate box.  Then one of the people was only 180 miles away.  The regional box was even cheaper.

eBay / Re: China set
« on: October 26, 2013, 06:48:24 PM »
I've not had much luck but I keep trying.  I have some china, American Embassy coffee mugs, etc. all to sell.  I pick odds and ends up at yardsales all the time for $.25 each.  Figure it's worth the risk or at least a tax write-off from Goodwill.

PayPal / Re: I HATE PAYPAL!!! Reserves are killing my business!!!

That sucks to hear Rules - but I'm glad you HAVE that issue.  It's like when my mother said when her and my dad were haven to write $26k checks to the IRS and stuff from the company we had formed.  It sucks to do it but it's good that we have to do it.

Keep up the good work.

I've never found that much money in stamps but I've not had to buy stamps in a good amount of time either.  Think the most I've found is a little over $10 in value from 2 different partial books.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #10...October, 2013
« on: October 26, 2013, 06:33:33 PM »
Just turned cold for the past 2 days but that didn't stop the newbies.  In fact we had more of what I call "blue hat ladies" at the auction today than old timers.  Lockers must be getting pretty sparse.  One guy came 2 hours to get to this auction.  15 units at 3 locations total today, silent bid which sucks.  I finally scored one unit and it was a low ball bid on a trash unit.

I paid $26.50 for a 10x10 mostly full with busted furniture and stuff.  I saw one good wood chair that would go along with 2 others we had at the store why wrote a bid down.  As expected most of it is garbage.  Have some scrap metal, lots of cloths, more firewood, but a few good items.  Already sold one item that covered most of my expenses for the day.  Still have the chair, a number of xmas stuff (normally toss but since it's that time), and a decent particle board dresser w/ mirror ($35-40).  So not a total loss of a day, but nothing great either.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Do's and Don'ts for taking pics
« on: August 06, 2013, 07:27:17 PM »
I only have a few places that say "no pictures".  Now - I do take pictures of any unit(s) that I win.  A few before I enter, a few during, any special item I find, etc.

No - that someone Travis is running also?

Many of them have moved south and come to auctions down here now.  We still have 3-4 new people show up each month.  They don't last too long.  Prices are better than they have been but still not super.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Gold in Electronics
« on: August 05, 2013, 05:58:51 PM »
The most common electronics with gold will be your computers and cell phones.  Some printers that have memory boards have a little gold.

If you are interested I can point you to some good buyers and a site.

I've made a little over $1k from scrap electronics.  When gold was at it's highest I could buy a complete desktop for $5 and make $20-$30 from it.

Things that I scrap:
computer parts
cell phones
xbox/playstation/etc consules - mid or high-grade boards
DVRs - for the hard drives

Most of the VCR, DVD, etc. players are all low grade.  Not worth pulling unless has some eproms.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Books
« on: August 05, 2013, 05:47:23 PM »
On books that old I can't really help you.  For newer books I pull out any cookbooks or childeren books.  The rest go to second and charles for store credit.  2 tubes of books netted me a little over $100 in store credit.  The stuff they don't want I just let them toss in the "free books" bin.  So I don't have to mess with them.  I then use the credit to buy stuff I want or can re-sell in store.  I'm sure I could make more money researching each book, listing them, etc.  But I don't have time for all of that anymore.

My buddies store has a room full of xmas stuff still.  This after we trashed a good many things last year.  Santa stuff, some lights, etc. will sell.  The fake trees are hit and miss.  Still in box, or new in box - $25 or so.  People try and get real cheap on some of the stuff.  We keep more of the unusual or really nice xmas stuff.

It's Feb/March that we really try and gear up for.  Come Oct we try and buy any furniture we can get our hands on and store.

Ah - I'm glad I was missed.  :)

I'm still around but not as active posting.  Got a promotion so been working more hours at work.  Plus with the summer we did some vacations.  My auction days have declined.  I only make 2-3 auctions a month now.  Do most of my buying from estate sales, yard sales, and people that come up to the store when I work on sat.  Do have an auciton this friday and saturday.

I still buy one or two units a month.  Mostly smaller ones unless I have time.  I did finally give in and purchased a 7x14' enclosed trailer.  Can fit all sorts of stuff in that baby.

I'll try and check in more often....

Storage Facilities / Re: "In House Buyer"
« on: August 05, 2013, 05:31:36 PM »
Just keep trying to be "that guy" for the facility.  My buddy had to spend a year working a contact to get some units.  We finally ended up buying 6 units from the place before they moved to the next guy.
