I've been storage auction buying since 2011. When I have alot of smalls I take them to the flea market for a quick flip. However sometimes I take a big item or two to draw in a crowd. When I do I stick to my prices on the big stuff, that way if I sell it I get what I want, if I sell it too cheap then I also lose the attraction. But lets say I have a really good window A/C. I find out its retail is $179, and I ask $100 on it. All day long people will low ball me. At the end of the day another vendor will offer me $90 on it and at that point I'll give in so that I don't have to lug it back home. But then in less than 10 mins they always flip it and get more than I was asking. Weird!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: my first loss

Yesterday I got 2 units, 5 x 10's. I love the smaller units and do very well with them snatching them up for $200 or less. One of my units came loaded with new baby furniture and other high end stuff, the other unit not so bad. I paid $95 for the second unit because it looked really good with plenty of boxes to go through. (l love volume in smalls) Anyhow after opening all 40+ boxes they were all boxed with junk and trash, nothing good. Just a projection TV which I sold for $100 to save my butt.

On the other hand I took my sister in laws with me for their first time. There was a unit which was 5x10 and filled up max with black trash bags. Everyone just passed it up, I did too because it looked like dirty close and I already had two units. My sister inlaw bid on it to my surprise and got it all for $5. After helping her get in there was over 100 trash bags fill with all kinds of stuff. Her first pull was a little purse which had over 50 buffalo nickels, a gold class ring, and silver. I laughed cause everyone just passed it up.

It's been a long while since I went to an auction but I had some time yesterday to go to one in the morning. I got a unit for $100. To start out with it has over 300 dvd movies, some sliver jewelry, and large amount of tools. But the surprise came under a blanket. I found what I thought was 2 old siren horns. In fact they are vintage speakers. After google check I found out they are pretty rare electro voice T250 speakers that collectors look for. A single one sold for $750 on ebay. I have 2 of them in working order and hope to fetch the same.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Fooled by an optical illusion

I didn't but I need to share this story. I went to an auction last month and there was a 10x10 unit filled with about 20 big plastic bins all nice and neat stacked. I love bidding on units with boxes and bins and this one was making me ansy. Once it went over $400 I backed out. After the auction I waited for the winning bidder to get to his unit and asked if I could just look what he got so I wouldn't be wondering later. To my amazement they were all empty!! :-\ He won it at $600. Normally I kinda love the feeling of someone who out bidded me to get nothing but damn. I couldn't feel good about it. My heart went out to him.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Ever find anything you can't sell?
« on: April 27, 2014, 05:55:24 PM »
This week was a crazy week. I went to some auctions at my local public storage's and to start off the day as we were going to one of the units in a indoor one we noticed many doors open with things falling out. Once we saw about 5 down the way and the camera in the corner pushed up we knew it was a break in. It was kind of an odd feeling knowing it just happened.

Well after the auction ended I paid for my unit and came across some items that seem to be gently used medical equip. Some like new with Retail prices at around $2000 each. But noticed they are not permitted on ebay, and then later found out that you can't really resell them. I called up a company that does sell them and he told me that the only thing I can do is donate it to a company like his so he can sell it. LOL well I don't think I'll be rushing to do that just yet. They are cpap machines and I'm not sure what I am going to do with them. I also came across some paintings that were ruined, later I found out if they had not been ruined they would have been worth a pretty penny.

I've also found lots of great brand name furniture that looks like kids took a blade to so they could engrave their names in.. URGH!!

Not to mention the stack of DVR boxes that range up to a couple of hundred or so but have balances on them so they become useless.

Anyone else sitting on items of good value but can't because of bad luck?

Flea Markets / Re: How much does your flea market charge you to sell there?
« on: December 05, 2013, 03:31:36 PM »
There is one place I go to that charges $5 for a space that can fit two cars for the day. There's also another place I go to that is the size of one car parking space and they charge $25 for half a day. It is a not a pretty place thats for sure but I do make quite abit there. When I go to the flea market I normally take all the junk from my auctions and sell it at $1.00 each. With the amount I take I normally come back with around $300-$400 for a 6 hour day. It's normally household stuff, nothing big so that it all fits in plastic bins in the back of my truck nice and neat.

Garage Sales / Garage Sales seems to be the best
« on: December 04, 2013, 11:35:48 AM »
I've been auction hunting since the summer and when I do my reselling I knew of 3 options. A place called traders village, flea market, and yard sale. When I go to traders village I get a nice big spot for only $5 for the day. It is a nice place, very clean with lots of traffic. However this place is where I make the least amount of money. The second option is our local flea market. It cost $25 for a small spot, dirt roads, not a great place but I always pull in a couple hundred or more, and it ends early around noon so your whole day isn't wasted. Then there's my yard sales. I'm only allowed to have them 4 times a year but they normally pull in $1000 over a weekend. My wife and I started auction hunting last summer and we do it to make extra money and have been able to find awesome pieces of furniture to furnish what was once our empty apartment. We now have lots of like new name brand furniture and electronics. We also pull in almost an extra $2000 a month. We buy one unit a week and normally get units that are under $100. We love doing it.

The Treasure Chest / Beginners luck
« on: October 08, 2013, 09:48:47 AM »
I'm new to the forums and have been going to auctions for 4 months now and wanted to share my find this past week.

I recently went to an auction were there was said to be 8 units for sale but when we got there there was now only 1 unit for sale. With so many people showing up I didn't think I was going to get one. When the door went up it was really hard to tell what was inside because there were two large tables blocking the view. Half the crowd left and the bidding started. To my amazement I won the locker at just $200. Once I got in the locker it started to look like a office or business of some kind and it was. It use to be a EMS first responders company. Inside were a dozen boxes of patient records, computers, office equipment, furniture, etc. As soon as I had the unit cleaned out the front desk called me and told me the original owner wanted to speak with me about the unit. I didn't want the owner to know my number in case they were going to hassle me so I emailed them from a new email account. The owner wanted to get back the documents and computers but said I could keep the rest. She asked how much I wanted for those items I really wanted to at least get my money back plus some so I was going to ask for $300 but didn't noticed a typo and put $3000 instead. She agreed to the price and I was shocked, but figured something on these computers must have been worth it. So I delivered the computers and docs, picked up my cash, and head back home to see the rest. I then cam across 2 chairs known as fairfield chairs. I took them to a guy I know who owns a high end furniture shop and he told me they retail at $700-800 each. He offered me $1000 for the pair and I took it. With everything else in the unit I made another $1000. So all together I made $5000 from that one unit. That will probably not happen again for a long while. But hope it does.
