The "Other" Job / I work at a Honda dealership in central Fl
« on: July 06, 2011, 09:47:26 PM »
Hello all- I make pretty good money working 60+ hrs a week selling Hondas... this month is tough because hyundai is coming on strong offering tantalizing reason for going with their cars in these tough times... plus since the tsunami in japan back in march no new cars or parts are being made for Honda so sales and inventory have been way down.

I have dreams of leaving the biz and doing auctions full time and owning a thrift store so i can be independently wealthy, lol hehe seriously would like to not be micro managed everyday by my bosses and kicked in the teeth by customers.  I get enough abuse at home by my wife-- lol. so i would love nothing more than to make less money, help the community with inexpensive preowned items for sale, and be able to take time off whenever i want :)  (SO FAR NOT DOING TO WELL AT SELLING ON CRAIGSLIST OR EBAY...)
WISH I HAD THE TIME TO DEVOTE TO THE TWO LOCKERS OF GOODIES IN MY GARAGE--- WILL BE HAVING A YARD SALE SOON AND AM FORCASTING A TOTAL PROFIT OF 400+ DOLLARS FOR SPENDING $110.  THATS COOL WITH ME!

ENJOY YOUR NEXT DIG!

So I went to an auctioneer's caravan of facilities this morning until noon--- 21 units!
1st facility(uncle bob's SS) had about 50 people (no kidding) and crap went for 275+++ ugh.  supposed to have 6 units- 3 paid up.

2nd facility(uncle bob's SS) supposed to have 9 units, 4 doors were cut open and every one went for 300+!!!! WTF... i decided to hold onto my 400 and save it for a much smaller crowd--- figured the reason for the crowds is they search storage auctions online and get our local autioneers website which lists their upcoming caravans- sign up and get emails of upcoming auctions=tons of people=overpriced lockers.  believe me- today's lockers were not that impressive.

HERES THE TIP- IF YOU WANT INEXPENSIVE UNITS, GO OLD SCHOOL SEARCHING FOR STORAGE FACILITIES THAT DON'T USE AUCTIONEERS (PUBLIC SELF STORAGE, the big orange P, uses their district managers to caravan once a month and handle the bidding wars=boring bidding not trying to skyrocket the price for a cut of the profits=more money you and i save!)

A note about our local auctioneers that irritate me- they make us form a line and after only 10 or so people see the locker she starts the bidding at 100.00!   its usually up to 225 by the time everyone sees it...  anyone else have any thoughts or ideas--???

New to Storage Auctions? / got a unit for $10.00
« on: June 22, 2011, 09:15:08 PM »
Went to a corporate chain storage facility yesterday and they don't use an auctioneer so no email blast to thousands of hunters. 94 degrees and only 12 people there to bid on 8 units.  They went super cheap too. I even bid on a second one by yelling yep and turning away... guy didn't hear me and it was a stacked high in that 5x10I with old people stuff. Went for $10 also. Next time I make eye contact. I really wanted that one. Oh well. Thousands out there. Kind of like when a customer doesn't buy a car from me I don't get bummed. P.M.A. makes a difference in life!
So I won a locker with a run down entertainment center, $35 in stamps, $40 in unused gift cards, some nice clothes, a camcorder, ceramic Brazilian collectibles, coffee table and matching end tables, a hurricane survival backpack with 5 years supply of pouched water! Also an antique type of iron bowl and other knick knacks. Even a prom dress and cap and gown and a dehumidifier.  Echo unlimited heavy hooded jacket and lots of good yard sale clothes and items.  Couple of gold chains and watches too. So not bad. Still no bigtime treasure find but like I said....

Thousands more in front of me :)
Anyone on here thinking about owning a thrift store? Thoughts?

So after months of watching I finally got my first locker for 110 dollars. I was super pumped it was a 5 by 5... and I found a lot of nice dress clothes still on hangers... sold a lot at yard sale
... even sold the stinky dress shoes lol. I have some items I would like to ask you about but my favorite piece of clothing I won is a pair of 1986 levi corduroys. Worn once, washed once and then hanging on a hanger since 1986 I kid  you not. How can I tell? Well there's a slight line in the corduroy where it was on the hanger. But these pants are mint! Ill post a picture if you want me to. So where do I sell them?

My name is Johnny G and I have been observing, researching and reading about storage auctions since I saw Storage Wars. I admit, it was, and is, fun to watch. I don't really care if it is fake or real or if its  like what I toss im my coffee, half and half, I became mesmerized by the business aspect of it.
To make a long story short I've been in the car business for 2 years. I am always faced with the challenge of trying to overcome the instant objection that I am a slime ball trying to get into someones wallet. Last time I checked, PROFIT is not a dirty word. Isn't that what all sales is about? Isn't that how America became the most powerful country in a short time of 200 years? Buying and selling is what you do, is it not? So since my profession is based on the same concept of buying low and selling high as the SA business, I felt strongly connected to the end goal of making a profit.
The last three months I was just a lookie-loo observing with hopes of one dayteam having the extra cash and extra time to buy a unit. Last Thursday I graduated to newbie status and bought my first locker. I WAS PUMPED! I GOT excited to find items to sell that would be fun to sell since I wouldn't feel like I had gotten my teeth kicked in after the sale lol!

Can I post what has happened since the buy right here or do I need to go to another box.  This is my first time ever wanting to join a forum, so im new to this kind of thing. Don't get me wrong I just never ever found anything interesting enough to talk about on the internet with other folks. I almost didn't know how to post this laugh out loud... and no I am not computer illiterate I'm 37 years old not 87 Haha. Thanks for having me! Im looking forward to sharing my stories with you all and learning a lot from you too.  Did u know "a lot" is two words not one? Lol im also a grammar geek.
