The Lounge / Holey smokes..
« on: March 20, 2015, 10:20:39 AM »
Watching auctions yesterday and today...   WOW what people are paying for junk units... Just saw a unit that was  "company unit Items abandoned by tenents"   go for big money...  it was LARGE and Junk...  Trash, broken stuff in it... These people must be high on something... ot spending their tax return on anything... Locally this month mostly junk units all the way around...

Oh well, time to get off my butt and go do the live auctions!!  Not going to get any win's this month online...

What do you guys do with Cable and Satallete reciever boxes (DVR's, etc)

The are next to worthless, electronic scrap to me, but if you ever had to buy one they charge a mint for them..   I get them from time to time in units and just wondering...  newer ones have LARGER 1 to 2 gb drives in them...  but seems like a waste to scrap it for just that.

Weird & Wacky Finds / DVD's and Pirates
« on: February 25, 2015, 08:03:32 AM »
The DVD unit I got... Interesting unit...  Started sorting out the DVD's checking cases, etc..

The Person with the unit must have been making copies of them... Because every DVD I found that was a retail verison, almost always had at lease  one or Pirate copy made up..   And I'm talking pretty nice, cases with printed(home printer) covers and plastic sleeves for the covers.  At least the Retail DVDS are all in good shape.  I filled up a trash can with pirate disk and cases.

Anyone else ever run into this???  I run into pirate disks all the time...

Weird & Wacky Finds / False Teeth, scooter, walker, canes.. DVD's
« on: February 24, 2015, 01:24:09 PM »
Okay the false teeth were creepy..  found them in a bottom of a styrofoam cooler that was located in a small (NICE) Deep Freese..

The scooter was strange, nice shape, but the seat for it was in the other end of the unit..  Got to wonder about people packing stuff up...  It's a WINMED.. with no keys and flat tires...

And found enough laundry soap that I left it at the dumpster hopefully where someone that can use it will find it..  (not the brand my wife uses, and not something I want to try to sell)

Next Unit I got had a TON of DVD's in it,  some pirate, the first box I opened was ADULT style and was missing all the disks from the cases (FINE BY ME)  the other boxes were factory DVD's big movies (not the 3$ walmart bin movies).  one was filled with Pirate DVD's  headed for the dump...

My son got a Killer m17 style colt Airsoft rifle in it new in box, HE LOVES IT and he earned it helping me..  Just some strange combinations of stuff in units..

Weird & Wacky Finds / What I found...
« on: February 20, 2015, 03:12:44 PM »
It's snowy, icey, I drove to the latest online auction unit I won.. Opened the door up started sorting a little (just in my car so not taking much) Low and behold I found something I really really really needed...

Windshield wiper fluid - and Ice melt...

I was out of both, and they were in short supply in the store last time I went so I wound up doign without, and my windshield was dirty for the salt on the road..   I paid 60$ for the unit, I got about 30$ in ice melt, and several RAINEX windshield fluid gallons..

Now the rest of the unit is very promising... Motorized mibility cart for older people (nice one, looks complete)  Desk, dresser, about 4 new coolers, and several bigger coolers..  Tools, saw one Air powered cutting wheel..  LARGE SIZE Work boots.. couple nice luggage pieces, a nice large MAGLITE flashlight, and other flashlights..  Lots of car cleaning/detailing stuff..  and a Small Deep freeze, microwave.

and of course a bed frame and Ironing board...  I am starting to think these come as standard issue for people renting a storage unit..

The other unit is filled with BOXES of DVD's and toys... an old school LARGE TV, and mattress and box springs.. (of course the standard ironing board, and bed frame)  I have yet to find a good marked for some SPECIAL content DVD's..  but mosts of the lot is rated R and below.

I logged in this morning and got notice about ending times being extended... Sure I have lost auctions because of this last minute snipping... but It's all fair that way.. I don't really like the extended times.. All I can see that doing is driving up my costs...

Weird & Wacky Finds / Things that make you go Humm...
« on: September 16, 2014, 03:21:22 PM »
got a unit with Tools, and work stuff.. In a bucket along with a reciprocating saw (no blade on it) was a black negligee, all silk and lace..

Can't want to see what else this locker holds..

I had someone local run me up on a unit, had some camping and fishing stuff, what I could see was worth about 300$ quick..  so  I bid, got ran up to 350, then someone else continued, it went for 420...  only thing is.. the buyer backed out that bid me up, now I stopped at 350..  The storage place emailed me via the web site to see if I wanted the unit at the 350...   I told the to auction it next month...  I should have go it for my first bid which was 150... I would have been happy they wanted to sell it for my last bid of 350...

Oh well.. not my issue...  I smell a RAT!!    I got out bid a few month on every unit from this storage location by another user, and saw them the next month listed again.. NICE TRY!!

Stories about Storage Auctions / I've got almost 20 units under my belt
« on: August 20, 2014, 07:50:57 AM »
All bought online, all made decent money..   I want to venture out and do a live auction now. I got a little research to do (finding them is not the real issue) More so for trying to find who owned the units, what their situation might have been..  I'm thinking about the live ones because you can actually see a little more detail than a few pictures, but the emotional aspect of bidding is a little frightening. Gotta tell myself only bid on what I can see like I do online, set my max and stick with it.

I would have probably avoided 2 units that I have bought this year if I just smelled them.  Actually though the second smelly one was loaded with very sale-able stuff. Tonos of Games, 2 game systems and several hand held games, and a complete Tattoo Kit (A business I can fall back on if all else fails, I just need to find a victim or two to practice the art on as I'm ink free and don't know anything about it). also found it in my own saw like they cut the locks off on the famous TV show.

Any tips for Live auctions?? Really I'm pretty good.. I've been to estate auctions and the like before. Just have to find the right auctions I want to go to, as they are mostly during the week and I will have to play hookie from work.

Stories about Storage Auctions / 4 Units
« on: August 14, 2014, 07:23:31 AM »
I just got 4 units yesterday,  Baby city it seems like, Multiple strollers, car seats, toys, Even got a brand new Double Brest pump(unopend box from UPS still and sealed box inside),  now that is not something I see everyday.  Couple NICE 10 speed bikes, Grills, womens shoes (new, nice boots, shoes, etc) Huges box of vhs tapes, remote control helicopter, a speaker box and amp for a car, and some huge power cables and fused junction boxes run it with, high end wires.   I guess my weekend will be filled with Craigslist and ebay.

One unit smells like a rat died in it, haven't done more than open the door, I see 4 computers, and a nice space heater in it that will pay for the unit by it's self. Whats further back scares me.

3 of the 4 had mattresses in them, I'm so glad I'm not a tenant and can uses their dumpster.

Oh, and it never fails, in a purse found someone's favorite TOY.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Okay... I got busy with LIFE
« on: July 21, 2014, 09:10:36 AM »
I just got a couple units.. Moved them into one and rented the unit..  Low and behold, I made money off a few items quickly..  Normally this would have been the end of the show.  Well then I got busy, Weddings, and Life, and the day job..  I forgot about the unit I rented..76$ rental unit a month (10x10)  okay... on the 21st of the month it cost me 110$...    I think I understand WHY people get caught up and lose their units..  Bill paid, notice to vacate the unit given..   Mental note made, "If I ever rent a unit put is on auto pay, or better yet, Don't get too busy to clear out the units as I get them"

Makes me feel for the people that can't afford them, and makes me wonder how FAST the bill would actually go up on them beyond that.  Now it was tempting to stage the unit a little better and let it go to auction!!

Stories about Storage Auctions / My Worst Unit ever
« on: May 13, 2014, 08:50:35 AM »
Got this unit over the winter..  So not only crappy but really Cold!

I got two items from it that I kept, A new Counter top rotisserie oven and a Blow up Christmas yard decoration.

Other than that this unit had NO value to me,  The cord was cut off the vacuum cleaner, the pamps were broken, the weed eaters were missing batteries and cords.

I however listed it FREE on craigslist and found someone to come take it all.. They got some scrap items, a baby car seat that was okay, a microwave that looked usable. I did help the load it up though.  They might have made their gas money back if the scrapped it properly.   I was glad not to have to deal with it, it had several NASTY mattresses hiding in there too..

Things I have learned from this unit has been priceless thought.

#1 People will take anything for free
#2 If items in a bin are pre-priced chances are you are getting fleamarket or yardsale rejects.
#3 If there is a Crapper in the unit it might just be a sign.

This unit gave me nightmares on getting rid of it.. I was tempted to just let them have the security fee..  I feel it was a set up unit and will not buy from this chain of storage providers again.
