Ive been reading over this thread and find truth to many of the posts both positive and negative. Ive noticed the old men staring at the crowds in disgust as if someone found their hidden gold. Also heard rude comments about how stupid people are that are new to the auctions. Only time will weed out the people. The new generation will be here to stay in my opinion. Alot of the older more experienced buyers will be retiring. From what I have seen, many dont have the patience for the crowds and younger people. Some Ive met both new and old are nice, and some are cocky.. but mostly all seem to "know it all" Territorial??? most definitely!!!! Most of the guys and a few gals look at you like you are stealing eggs from their henhouse when you bid or win an auction. And the newbies.. well,. they go crazy over a concealed container or box. Around here if ya put 5 plastic storage bins in a locker, it will sell for $300. Throw some dust on it and it will sell for $600. I hope their pockets are deeper than their treasure hunting patience. Newbies seem to be everywhere in droves and the old timers just sit back in disbeliefat all the monies people are paying out. I think the old timers arent going to have the easy money anymore and 400 % profit on a good unit. More like 50%. I also see alot of uneducated people looking to spend crazy money on what they think is a treasure because of tv. They wont last long for sure. All in all, the auctioneers is the ones making out like a bandit. They dont even register here anymore becuase of the crowds...
Just my two cents worth. Not new and not old to the game.

ive never seen bins being sold 'by the bin' yet photographing individual pieces taken from the bins. Doesnt seem like very good business practice for the auction site to advertise that they know whats in the bins, several days before the auction, not to mention the individual pieces being photographed and advertised for auction. Its not their property and wont be til the put it on the 'block'... Appears as they are selling all the good stuff by the piece then selling the 'full bin' with the idea that valuables are in it. Maybe they should advertise "Safe in this locker but we dont know the contents because its still locked" and take a photo of it.

would suit me if the ones that arent even registered wasnt allowed in front of the auction. that would clear half of them out. ya see people walking straight thru the gates, then standing in fron of the locker when its being auctioned. I told the auctioneer that if he would back the people up that dont want to spend money, he'd make more. Hard to bid when ya cant see anything.Maybe a midget on stilts with night vision goggles isnt such a bad idea.

It just seems detrimental with all the crazy bidding on unknown lockers. If they pull out 'the valuable' pieces to get you there, whats to expect out of the rest of the stuff? housewares and matresses? Shouldnt be in there until the morning of the auction. I was at an auction the other week where a lady was running around all pissed off and called the police. Turns out, she was late on her rent, then she paid it up, and she was missing alot of tools. She was a manly woman so i dont doubt her having missing tools, especially after the police arrived. So she filed the police report while the auctions of other bins was going on. Her bin wasnt on auction that day, she said she was just there to remove some stuff and check on the rest of her belonging that was stored.

3418-A  S. New Hope Rd., Gastonia.   As of 1-31-11 we have 14 Bins which include items such as Tools, Furniture, Appliances, TV's, Electronics, an Antique Player Piano, Marble Tables, Kirby Vacumm Cleaner w/Shampoo Kit & manuals, a box of knifes and much much more to be auctioned off.    One large bin contains hundreds of High-End Mens & Ladies clothes in "Like-New" condition that would be perfect for a consignment store.   These will be Full Bin Sales.  We may have a couple bins that will be sold by the piece.

Whats wrong with this picture??? I wasnt aware that they could enter until the auction, much less advertise some good things and show photos of the things they mentioned. Ones only left to believe that they ramsacked every locker and picked thru them....I hope nobody shows up period.

Was well over 200 at a few auctions I attended here in Charlotte last week. Perhaps I need to start selling chairs and hot coffee and donut.

I am in Charlotte, NC. Its not a good sign when your number is 224 and still people registering. This was a different auction... what a mess. Hard too get to the unit much less see what inside.  The alleys arent big enough. Wished at least the lookers would go away or at least stand back. 'REGULATORS" is whats needed here. Think I will just stay home til the crowds thin. Went to a by the piece auction.. Hard to sell many of those boxes by the piece when they know whats inside. If they sold "mystery box", they would probably sell for $50 each, Then everyone would get some NatGeo magazines and pans. Maybe even some costume jewelry if their lucky.

General Storage Auction Talk / Over 200 at local auctions these days
« on: January 03, 2011, 01:14:57 AM »
I went to a few auctions the other day. over 200 people following the auctions over 4 different locations. They was so may people they ran out of bidding numbers and stopped registering people, just said if you buy, give them the info. This was a very cold day with ice all over.  Bad neighborhoods, run down storage units, doors that wouldnt open properly, Less fortunate person looked to have lived in one unit. Cheap rent i suppose but it sold for $45 for basically nothing but a efw ashtrays, blankets, and alarm clock laying on the floor  . Seen people paying insane prices for junk hoping to find a treasure. Closet sized bin sold for $185. Had two garbage bags with christmas decorations sticking out. Also looked to be 4 blue plastic sotrage containers. Id like to think there was gold bars in the bins but image with the christmas stuff on top. it couldnt have been anywhere near worth $185. Man paid $825 for a pile of EXPIRED in 08 Chinese food boxes and soft drink cases from a business. No actual rest. appliances. I watched the tv shows too, but didnt lose my mind. I used to attend these auctions 15 years ago where $20 would actually  get you a decent unit. Perhaps I should have stayed home.
