We all know where the money is really going....

Be sure to vote in the poll above.

Last week, a competitor of ours and I got into a debate over what the most appropriate term was for our industry. Ironically, he argued that "online storage auctions" was the most appropriate term, while I argued that "online self-storage auctions" was the correct term.

My reason for selecting "online self-storage auctions," is simple. Our industry doesn't cater to the storage industry, it caters to the self-storage industry. The term "storage" is too broad. There are all types of storage industries eg. data storage, organizational storage, oil & gas storage, etc. This is most likely why the self-storage industry chose the more specific term self-storage.

Self-storage, self-storage auctions, online self-storage auctions. It's a natural progression.

Another thing to consider is that the term "storage auction" is a misnomer. The auction isn't for "storage," it's for the contents of the storage unit. Perhaps the term "online self-storage lien sales" is more appropriate.

So what do you guys think? Does one term make more sense than another? If so, why?

Legal Issues / Re: Online Storage Auctions Now Legal in Missouri
« on: July 04, 2015, 02:27:35 PM »
I think the rules in Australia are slightly different. They really should do a season of storage wars down under some time haha! But to address the topic, I think as long as you make sure you've done your proper due diligence and announcements, it's pretty much okay to go right?

You would think so, but without reviewing your lien laws, it's hard to say. Would you mind posting a copy?

The people who are successful in this business all have one thing in common: they find creative ways to extract as much money as they can from most everything in their inventory. They waste very little because their perception of trash is different than others. They see the value in things most of us see as insignificant. If you've ever started with nothing and worked your way up, you can relate. Those who keep this mentality, even when life is comfortable, are the ones who do well in this business and in life.

Listing items in the free section of Craigslist is a great way to get rid of things quickly, but before you give anything away, determine whether it has value. If the answer is yes, I recommend pricing the item slightly below the item's minimum value. For example, let's say you have a refrigerator from 1985 in fair condition. Any running refrigerator, regardless of age, will usually sell quickly at $80 on Craigslist. Just compare asking prices of similar appliances for sale on Craigslist, (if there isn't anything similar in your area, expand your search to the nearest major city,) then price yours 10-20% below the average, and your phone will ring off the hook. This way, you get rid of the unwanted item(s) and still put a little cash in your pocket.

if the owner is auctioning on a public platform, he should not have control of who bids. Once you win, it's pretty much paperwork from there!

What if the online auction site you're using has a feedback system, and the highest bidder has horrible feedback? eg. multiple reviews  "Buyer is a no show," or "Left trash in the unit" or "Buyer never paid." or "Took to long to clean out the unit."......You get the picture.

Now, with OSA, the seller can review the feedback of anyone who bids. Let's say the runner up bidder's feedback is excellent. Wouldn't it make sense, in a situation like this, to cancel the highest bid and allow runner up to purchase the unit? After all, there's only a $10 difference between the bids of the winner and the runner up. If I were a storage operator, I'd be more than willing to recover $10 less, if it ensured a professional transaction. Just my two cents.

Meet Bo, my daughter's new Palomino. (You have to be logged in to see the photo.) They're both 5 years old. Man, they grow up quick don't they? Next, she'll be asking for some ponies under the hood. And I'm the sucker who always falls for those big blue eyes and will inevitably say  :72: Aren't her boots cute?   ???  Never thought I'd hear myself say those words out loud.

when it comes to cloud storage

Cloud storage? Am I missing something?

Wait a second Mark, you probably thought our forum was about "Online Storage" based upon our name, right? Sorry, bud, you're in the wrong place for tech talk.

South West / AuctionsTX.com Upgrade Underway
« on: June 22, 2015, 03:32:07 AM »
Up late tonight getting ready for tomorrow's upgrade. Wish I was  :a012:

We're launching some awesome new features on AuctionsTX.com. For the past 5 years we've provided the most comprehensive storage auction schedule for the 5 largest cities in Texas, but I have to admit, up until now, the actual schedule was pretty basic. Just a spreadsheet converted to a PDF. Despite it's simplicity, it has a great following. Plus, we have the best advertising team that money can't buy.... our loyal members!

That being said, we're improving the site by adding some great new features for our members like a calendar view, integrating Google maps and beginning the next week, auctions will be added to the calendar as we locate them. This will give members the ability to view auctions up to a month in advance. We're also considering adding a few other features like content descriptions, additional facility details, and turn by turn directions.

The changes will be implemented this evening and hopefully everything will go smoothly so we can finally get our beauty sleep.  :bedtime2:

I think I'd rather take my chances on a $5 lottery ticket. At least I don't have to pay dump fees if the ticket is a loser.

He's wonderful isn't he Ann?  ;) And I agree, 48 hours seems to be the industry norm, although I have been seeing a lot of facilities moving to a 24 hour or even same day clean out. In reference to the unit above, that should be more than enough time to clean out the unit.

Does this remind you of anyone? Yourself perhaps?

Gas isn't cheap these days and if you can make it home safely in one trip...keep stacking!

We used to pack our box trucks the same way, floor to ceiling, every space got filled.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Arcade Machines?
« on: June 05, 2015, 03:49:07 PM »
I would love to be able to find a storage with some old school arcade machines. Like Street Fighter Arcades. Has anyone found any of those in storage units?

They're rare, but not uncommon. Every month or so, I read a legal notice advertising a unit full of arcade games or gaming equipment.
