General Storage Auction Talk / Re: iPad for research at remote locations

I recently just got an Ipad 2 16GB + WiFi 4G. The cool thing is I did not pay for it. I won it from a sweepsstake. :) Anyway, I wont be using it to do research on, just to big for me to do that, rather use a smart phone. Besides I am not paying for a data plan for the Ipad :)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Scrap metal - is it worth it?
« on: December 04, 2011, 10:55:42 AM »
Husband is a steel guy so scraping has been a part of life. Now he looks a little differently on the small stuff. And I am with you on the electric cords, and cutting the ends off extension cords. Never even crossed my mind.  :)

Heard a kid talking about the gold in cell phones. Said it is about .40 a phone, has a guy who will give him .50 phone. Sounded like to much work or total BS LOL

Gold is an excellent conductor, which is why they use them in phones and computers. It is only a trace amount, and is very tedious work to get the gold out.

I also am not sure on the legalities of this. But I would think it would be ok to sell pipes, lighters, and other objects that do not contain tobacco with out a problem as long as your not selling to minors. Now selling actual tobacco products, cigs, cigars, chew, dip, etc.... Is illegal to do so with out the proper license. However, like has been mentioned up above people do it all the time. I would not post on CL, but just look around for smokers to sell them to.

Did good with that locker, congrats :)

That was a nice find. I think I would laughed my ass off too if the first thing that falls out is 20yr old m&ms, lol

That's what drives me crazy about shows like this. They drive prices up all across the board. I go to yard sales and people inflate their prices because they saw it on tv.  The guy on Storage Wars the other night said he got a locker full of garbage for  a deal when he paid $850.

In my opinion it has gotten worse this season because now they are trying to justify why they overspent.  Pricing old worn out items at a super inflated cost.  On that episode where brandi and jarod purchased the locker for $3000, Jarod priced the glassware at $200. What?! The receiver he priced at virtually brand new prices.

These actors over price their items because they can probably get those prices now that they are famous. That's fine for them, but frustrating for store owners. People come in all day trying to pawn their old tube tv's off on me for $50 because they saw an episode of xxx that said they could sell them for that much.

Old tube TVs are hard for me to sale. Most of the time I throw them out after sitting on them for awhile. Highest I ever sold them for was $25

The Treasure Chest / Re: What's the Value? Challenge

Jross,

I've heard of people doing that with those old entertainment centers. Pretty smart if you ask me; with all the flat screen tv's no one will touch an entertainment center at auctions.

Was it difficult to do? Time consuming?

I just did a lamp. These industrial repurposing things people are coming up with blow my mind. http://www.restorationhardware.com/  is a good example of people repurposing. THey have some sweet items I would love to own, but dang, look at the price tags!

Sanding it just right was the most time consuming, think I got it all done in 3 days. That is with giving it time to dry and working it around my schedule.

Got a couple responses. I'm kind of stunned no one is really taking up the challenge.  I found an interesting item in a house yesterday. First time I ever bought a camel saddle!  Google them, I might make a little table out of the one I found.

Anyone ever repurpose, or rethink how to use items?

Im usually repurposing stuff. Sometimes it can make or break you. For an example. I got a locker that looked good from the door. But going through it, what a disaster. Nothing of real value. Either it was broken, or it was junk. However I did spot a solid wood entertainment center, but like I said everything was damaged. What I did was cut off the top part, sand it down from where I cut it. Then refinished it with a nice stain. Essentially turning it into a nice solid wood coffee table. This costed me a little extra money to get the stain. But well worth it.

I did not make a profit with this locker. But if it was not for me turning that Ent. Center into a coffee table, I would of lost alot more money then what I did lose. I almost broke even.

It's all my sisters fault!  Since having children, I've found 'alternative' ways to making $$.  From coppersmith to furniture refinishing.  My sis said I had to watch American Pickers & Pawn Stars.  I did and became a picker.  From there "you have to check out Storage Wars".  I did.  I dabbled and now am hooked.  Heck I don't even have time for my antiquing lately.

It's funny though....my first step in auctions was a storage auction where they sold individual lots.  My sis (she really is a driving force eh?) saw a little, lighted plastic lamb among a HUGE Christmas lot.  I told her no, as my Trooper can only haul so much.  There were two trees, about 8 tubs of lights, a couple boxes of ornaments and two flat boxes leaning against a wall.

Opening bid $25.  No takers.  $10.  No takers.  $5.  No takers.  $1 and for some reason, unknown to me, my bidders card turned in my hand and I bought it.

It did all fit in my trooper, but barely!

4 hours of sorting, testing and organizing lights found me with a lot that I sold on Craigslist (in July, in Tucson no less) for $75, enough lights to keep us twinkling for the next 20 holiday seasons and yes.....the little plastic lamb for my sister.

Oh the flat boxes contained board deer that had never been used and had $49.99 price stickers on them.  The lady that bought the lot really only wanted those as she trains horses and was going to set them up on her property to get the horses used to 'wildlife'.

When my husband was taking the 'dead' lights to our local transfer station the gal running the payment booth asked if she could have the lights to recycle......Great foray as I made money and nothing was wasted!

So yes.....I have my sister to 'blame' for all this!  And ya know.......she has never attended an auction herself.

Thanks sis~

Great story. Good Luck in your new endeavors :)

The Lounge / Re: Real Deal TV Show (what the heck ?)

This show is about as fun as watching paint dry.

I agree, the show has a good concept, but it is lagging in so much stuff. Or rather the Producers are trying to cram to much into a 30 mins show.

Got any research hospitals or universities near you? They might be interested in the slides and body parts which would relieve you of the disposal costs. Of course a disposal doesn't cost that much to run! ;)

I am not sure it would be legal to try and sell the body parts. The slides no problem, I think you should be able to get rid of them like Alloro said at a Medical University.
