South East / Atlanta Pods Auction

Is anyone going to the pods auction up near Atlanta?  New to unit auctions and wondered if it would be worth the time/effort to attend.

@tclane,

By the way, if I see a 12 year old kid bidding on a decent unit at auction; he or she ain't gonna win it as long as I am there! Just sayin'  ;D

Lol  -  then you could be bidding against my oldest.  She loves auctions.  At the school auctions it's my girls that bid on pretty much every one of the baskets.  My oldest bids at the hockey jersey auctions (she is still mad at my company president for outbidding her).  For them I tell them the highest price willing to pay and they bid up to that point.  Figure it's good to teach them young if they have an interest.  It can even be a good strategy.  Daughter won a auction at one of the estate auctions due to the other bidder just couldn't bring themselves to bid against her.  She was 10 and had that childish energy about her.  Of course the item was something she had picked out for her so that prob helped.

On the show they seem to go with the experts "estimated" price.  Estimated and actual price at sale can be a huge difference.

Total noob at this so take my wards with some salt.

If you and your father get along and communicate well it can be a great boon.  My father and I do many estate auctions and such together.  He has more cash then I, where I have the tech, truck and trailer, etc.

In your case it sounds like you will do all of the physical labor.  However, he can do alot of the actual selling, sorting, picture taking, etc.  Mostly the computer and network work that you may or may not want to take time to do.  Or that is time you could do other stuff.

For storage units in my case I'm doing most of the research to find auctions, calling places, etc.  My father will hit a few of the auctions and stuff that run while I'm at my full time job.  If we win anything then I stop buy to do first sorting and loading and see if need to come back for a second trip or to bring the trailer.

Two people are better then one during the actual auction also.  One can be a distraction and/or watch the crowd for signs while one watches the auctioneer.  Can also be researching or getting another longer look at the unit while one bids if it's not a very fast paced auction.  Least that is what we have done at estates.

Well I'll be honest and admit I'm a hobbiest.  I've not even purchased my first unit yet.  Still doing my research and learning the trade...is how I found this site.  Also still working on my seed money, $300 down and growing.  I'm new to storage units but not to auctions.  Father and I go to a dozen or so auctions each year.  Mostly estate and equipment type auctions.

One issue I have is how easy the shows make it look.  While I love Auction Hunters for the entertainment factor I do prefer Storage Wars due to them showing the good and the bad.

As for my strategy to sell items I'll do like I've done in the past.  Mostly Flea bay and craigslist.  I will also prob hit up my sister-in-law for the smalls that I can't sell easily.  She is unemployed and doing lots of avon, yard sales, etc.  Figure offer her .25 or .50 cents on the dollar to sale my items on saturday to leave me free to do stuff w/ kids, etc.

While I'm close to Atlanta I figure I may stay away from the area.  Considering all the other newbies and professionals alike out bidding on units.
