Suggestion Center / Re: New Category Suggestions
« on: December 05, 2012, 09:37:05 PM »
I agree for the most part. However, I don't think it will ever be like it was.
I agree with that statement. At this point in time, not only are the tenants realizing they will lose their belongings but the facility personnel are more interested *sic* in what might be in them. The prices "might" get to semi-normal but the quality is going to be scarce. IMHO

As a woman knowing I will be sticking my hands in the most un-Godly things, I dress for total comfort. I don't dress in ripped, grungy clothing and blacken my front teeth, but what I do wear is for working.

48
There is one facility I will try to avoid and it is because of the locations and the people that have them,  parking their shopping carts in them. I think you understand why. Not saying I wouldn't go if nothing else is available and it's a good day to get out and about, just that it would be my last choice.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Have you ever MIS-DIRECTED a NEWBIE ?
« on: December 03, 2012, 08:41:54 AM »
I haven't misdirected them in a driving kind of way, but I did have one woman that I had noticed who would ignore everyone until she wanted something from them. She once came up to me all friendly and started asking how I got info for the auctions. I wasn't about to tell her all the work we had done to find the "list", so I just told her I get on the internet and look at various cities classifieds for lien notices and also make phone calls. I don't mind helping people with the little knowledge I "might" have but sometimes they need to do research like we did when we first started. IMHO

We have driven about 100 max. just to get a feeling of the out of our comfort zones.  If we think the drive is worth it we will do it again but if not, we then know not to EVER do that again!!  ;D

We use both. If it is something we want and we have "friends" there, we bid first and a lot of times they will back off. Even though as they say "There are no friends at auctions", we like to use it anyway. But, we might bid last if it is a unit we think is a great one just to see how high it starts to get and if it's reasonable we jump in. At times my husband stops bidding on a unit and if I think it is worth it I will take over and bid once or twice. When I do, the auctioneer kinda looks shocked and laughs in a friendly way but knows I want that locker! ;-) It's all about the crowd, the lockers and how much you are willing to spend.

Absolutely, I even told my husband that his was coming from there and maybe if he is lucky I will "buy" him some new gloves to work in. ;-)

We once went to a U-Haul auction with Luther Davis in the MetroPlex of Texas that the previous month had been cancelled due to the companies paperwork not being handled correctly. Needless to say the next scheduled auction, they all were combined. I can't remember the exact amount ..way over 125 units total. We started at 8 in the morning and it ended after 9 in the evening. One of the best we have been to (so far). Texas almost always has big caravan runs at different times of the month as long as you are willing to drive the distance. Now, in Central Calif. so they are pretty small in comparison, for some reason some of them split them up with two different auctioneers even when they are only a few miles apart and only 7 or so locations. We did go to one that had maybe 100 for the whole week but the lockers were 85% trash. Even the auctioneer looked into one and said "Oh GEEZ, again?"

Storage Facilities / Re: No Smoking At Storage Auctions
« on: November 29, 2012, 09:18:29 AM »
Yes, they are doing this here also. I'm glad, I have no problem with people smoking (if that's their choice), just not at a closed in place that already stinks to high heaven anyway and gets in our faces!

Garage Sales / Re: Does Anyone Do Garage Sales On Sunday?
« on: November 28, 2012, 09:37:17 AM »
Oh yes! Fridays do well for us as well. I was kind of surprised fridays can be so good.

One thing we learned about Fridays Garage sales is: A lot of buyers are re-sellers and they would buy lots of stuff from us cheap and take it out to Trader's Village on Saturdays. Worked for us since we got what we wanted for the items and hopefully worked for them too.

Garage Sales / Re: Is theft a problem at your garage sales?
« on: November 28, 2012, 09:30:26 AM »
I was once told that you can expect at least 5% of your items to walk away at garage sales and flea markets, so we have the better items up front for the garage sale and the items we don't mind walking away towards the street. Flea mkts, we just try to watch what we can but if the crowd gets large at one time, there's not much we can do to watch them all. Mostly what walks are small tools and dvd's and cd's.

Hi- I'm new to storage auctions. Currently sell on ebay and have sold in flea markets for years. I trade in Gillette razors, Bolex and other 16mm cameras and lenses, Vintage wristwatches and pocket watches.
Welcome, yea I think I got a couple of the "Bolex" watches a few times. ;-)

Hey everyone :)

I've been posting on the forum for a few days and figured maybe an introduction thread was in order.

I am a picker from the south. I have been doing this full-time since July. I primarily source my product at yard sales an thrift stores, but I do manage to find the occasional storage locker that speaks to me. Because of my primary way of selling (eBay) and my primary source of income (board games), most storage lockers aren't for me. I'm not interested in furniture, but sometimes, I'll see one that I just HAVE to bid on.

I also do a YouTube show called the Bargain Bandit on Tuesdays and have a live hangout M-F with another gal picker. I love to share my finds and answer questions from people who are trying to do the same thing I do.

My best advice for anyone starting out is to start with what you know and are passionate about. I am passionate about board games, so I started there. I sell other things, but that knowledge about what to pick up comes in time and with experience. Find your niche and know your market. :)

Thanks for reading.

Welcome, I've seen you in a few places. Hope you enjoy the forum as much as I do.

The Treasure Chest / Re: My Locker Find
« on: November 28, 2012, 08:30:42 AM »
They slid the door open and there it was, about a 90 year old chest that Barry always likes to buy. So in his honor I bid on the locker and wow, I got the locker for 275 dollars.  After clearing my path to the trunk, I drug it ut and man it was heavy so I knew it wasn't empty.  I said a little prayer and then opened the chest.  WOW, to my amazement it was loaded with money,  I shut it real fast so nobody could see what was in it.  I finally got a guy to help me lift it and put it in back of my truck and hurried home, then my neighbor helped me get it off and and we put it in my garage and I told him it was locked and was gonna have to have a locksmith come open it.  Once he left, I opened it and began counting and it took most of the night.  When I finished I couldn't believe it, I had $22,478,360.00 dollars.  I suspect it was a mob locker.  I'm living my life in fear now but think I am going to move to the french riverara.  22 million!!!!!.......OK, now if you believe this, then you are stupid enough to believe that show is real and that the lockers are not sprinkled with goodies in some lockers, garbage in others. The show is a hoax and some are dumb enough to believe it.  Some of those lockers where they profit 30K, i'm just so sure owners of lockers  like that leave them and say heck with it, I don't need that 30K.  That said, the show is still one of my favorites for one reason. BARRY.  That guy should have his own variety show , he cracks me up, he has to be a millionaire with all those bad rides he shows up in(that is if they are really his).   So if he is that rich he should just outbid Dave on every locker.  Jarrod and Brandy are not believeable because why would a honey like that marry a want to be thug like Jarrod?  hmmmm, guess thats all, so i'm going to go on out to my garage and roll around in my 22million.  Oh one more thing, owners of thes locker complex's are usually scum of the earth so any locker that goes past due , i'm sure they open them up and steal anything of value out of them. lmao, some of you are so gullible.

ha-ha I was going to type "AND THEN U WOKE UP!"
