General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Look what happen to this moron!!
« on: January 25, 2012, 03:49:55 PM »
He paid $1000 for that??? Wow...what an idiot??  LOL I may be saying the same thing tomorrow as we clean out the lkr we won last weekend :)

Not only do they get paid, but get "fringe" benefits as well. Notice Jarrod, Darrell and Dave all have brand new Fords? One episode shows Barry giving Dave a Yuuup hat....now his trucks and trailers are all labeled with it.  How about proceeds from their clothing lines? Also in the works, Storage Wars New York.

I think its funny how people get so worked up over the show. It's TV. If it showed how much work goes into cleaning out, selling and profiting from the lockers...no one would watch.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Researching Tenants
« on: January 25, 2012, 08:51:43 AM »
If you have the time, I think its not a bad idea to do a little checking. All depends on what you can find out.  I was able to find out info on 4 of the last 5 lkrs that were at our last auction. It can give you a general idea of what might be in there. (for instance, one of the lockers was owned by someone who had 5 kids (all I would say under the age of 7). so there were a lot of clothes, toys, etc. My husband also noticed one of the boxes marked "soaps". It went for $135. In talking to the guy that won it, sure enough clothes and vhs tapes, if he's lucky he might break even.

My thought was how good are the clothes and stuff going to be after being used by 5 kids?  If someone has major collections against them, what are the chances they have anything of value in there? Just my thought.

I agree about the divorce thing though.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Most commonly found items

I got a kick out of a comment at an auction we went to last weekend. One of the regulars was stating that he has found porn in almost every single lkr. So we get to a lkr of an older lady. A comment was made about the chances of finding porn in an 80 year old's lkr. Someone replied "well, she wasn't always 80".  :)

Is there any one else reading these that lives in WI ? I am just north of Madison. I'm definitely jealous of the people who live in the states where they can do this year round!!!!

The "Other" Job / Re: My full time "other job" is

We own a chimney repair/cleaning business. I sell on eBay to supplement income during slow season and for Christmas money. I love garage sales and resale stores. We bought our first locker yesterday (nice already having a truck and enclosed trailer). We will see how it goes.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: How far are you willing to travel?
« on: January 22, 2012, 12:40:42 AM »
I think I would travel less now than maybe a year ago.  The tv shows  have sparked an interest of most who would never probably have gone to a storage auction before.  I have been to many auctions, but not storage unit ones. I have noticed though, many storage facilities around here put legal notices to the fact that the "units will be cleaned out and disposed of" not auctioned off.

Well, went to our first auction. It was 11 below, but sunny and the roads weren't too bad considering the major snow yesterday. About 20-30 people there...mostly couples though. 5 units, 2 locations. We bid on the 2nd locker (10x10) and got it for $425. It was the unit with conditions: she relinquished unit in return for family photos and a ceramic xmas tree given to her by her mother. No big deal.  Full unit, lots and lots of boxes. There is a large anitique dining table with claw feet (that caught my eye, along with an old sled, boxes marked Halloween).  She has been renting the unit since 2002 and hasn't been in it in at least 2 years (talked to the owner before the sale). We haven't cleaned it out yet, only brought a few boxes, etc that would fit inside the truck.  The units weren't outrageous, ours was the highest and had the most interest with different bidders. I think one other unit went for over $300, full, but things marked with rummage stickers, and about 4 mattresses and clothes.  Last unit was pretty much cleaned out except for a/c units, old couch, pallets, etc. Most of us walked away so I don't even know if it sold. I wanted to take pictures before we went into it, but it was an inside unit and was not light enough :(  I honestly think we will at least break even (albums, vintage crystal set with box, the table, lawn jarts, few boxes of good canning jars with lids, singer sewing machine with case...and that's just what we looked through. Way too cold at that point to do any more!

Thank you to everyone who gave me advice. It was appreciated and very helpful!!!

I have a couple of more questions....first auction is tomorrow with 5 units. 2 are by the same owner, 1 being sold with conditions. Upon calling the storage facility today, all units are a go and he didn't foresee any of the owners doing a last minute pay. The conditions on the one unit is that she relinquished the unit for auction, but asked that she be able to get photographs and an item given to her by her mother. Now this is the one with both lockers? (both are 10x10)  Do we try to get both units? We do have a limit set of what we are willing to spend. I did research and found all but one owner.  All units are described with household items (4 out 5 lockers are tenants who have multiple evictions).  If we do get the "conditioned" locker, we could just take the items back to the storage facility for the owner to pick up? I don't think I would want them knowing who got the locker.

This auction is about 45 min away from us. This is going to seem like a stupid question, but do people notice what you pull up in? We are currently in a snow storm, so tomorrow we will need the 4x4 truck.  We do have an enclosed trailer, but I don't think its a good idea to show up with it, do you? The storage facility does allow for us to rent the unit as long as we would need to.

Any last minute advice???

Flea Markets / Re: Not there yet. :(
« on: January 20, 2012, 07:56:30 AM »
I would put stuff on the ground at the flea market.  I have never sold at one, but when I go, I hardly ever look at the stuff on the tables unless I am looking for something in particular. If there's stuff in boxes on the floor...that's where I look! Never know what kind of "treasures" might be in there.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Craigslist email etiquette ????
« on: January 19, 2012, 06:07:42 PM »
I hated the idea of getting a "smart" phone....but I got one anyway. The only thing I like about it is that I can look stuff up before I buy it.  Its also saved me from buying stuff I thought for sure would sell.  I don't know if you list on eBay or not, but having the app lets me know if there's any questions that need to be answered, if something sold, etc.  So I guess it's paying for itself!

Would it be possible to break down a mattress? I wonder how much effort it would take and if it would be worth it?

I kind of like the text message thing...at least better than email.  11:30pm might be late for most of us, but not to someone who may work 2nd shift and hops on the computer after work.  I guess we have to change with the times! I have a 20 year old, so I get used to the texting....otherwise I would never know what he was up to!

The worst part of living in the midwest....winter time and no garage sales!!!  Nothing beats an unadvertised sale!! I have learned not to go to any sales listed on Craigslist!

That I agree with.  I'm pretty anxious about attending this weekend, although I should be here getting the stuff I got on eBay. I have been having pretty good luck at the thrift stores though.  Here's a question for everyone....what are you looking for when you are looking for resale stuff? Personally I go for seasonal decorations and toys.  They seem to make the most money for me. The only downfall I have is buying lets say Christmas stuff now, I have to sit on it until next fall to make a good profit.
