Picker's Paradise / Excellent thrift store score
« on: June 30, 2012, 12:49:27 AM »
I was doing a service call in a neighboring town a couple weeks back and decided to stop in at a thrift I noticed for the first time. Was looking at the jeans and the shirts, purses, toys... the usual stuff. On my way out I see a shelf PACKED with model car kits. I knew a little something about them from building them as a kid and thought maybe I'd buy a couple and build them with my son. So I started to look a couple up on eBay.

After looking up 5 of them I asked for a manager. They had them listed at $4.98 each. I asked, if I buy them all, how much will you sell them for? She said if I bought them all, I had to buy them ALL. I asked what she meant and she took me in the back where there were 4 more massive bins of them. I said ok and asked how much each. She said $.75 each. I asked if I could peek in a few boxes and see if they are completed or are still in pieces. I noticed most of the decals were missing but I estimated that 99% of them hadn't been touched other than to remove the decals (turned out I was right). Ended up buying 160 kits for $120.00 +tax.

Took them home, opened them up, photographed them and started putting them on eBay. It's been two weeks now, we've sold about 25 of them and I'm looking at a $780.00 paypal balance! /happydance

Something I've learned from this experience. The decal sheets sell for upwards of 10.00 by themselves. In addition to that, certain parts from the kit can be sold individually too. For example, wheels and tires and hubs, motors, roll cages, bodies, seats, and accessories like spoilers or pets or phones, chrome parts, the list goes on and on... all these items sell by themselves for anywhere from $2.00 (chrome mirrors from an incomplete set) up to $25 (Cragar rims with redline goodyears)! Spoilers, bumpers, freaking gas caps all of it!

Which led me to one last thing. I thought, hell if I can sell the individual pieces like that, why not go buy a model and part it out. When I was a kid they were 8.00 all day at wal-mart. Now, wal-mart doesn't even sell them and the stores that do want 18.00-100.00 PER kit!

South East / Pay to play
« on: March 29, 2012, 10:00:13 PM »
Wife heard it at an auction today. More auctioneers are talking about the fee to view the lockers in hopes of killing off the looky loo's. Well I talked to the facility owner on my way out after clearing out the locker she won and dropped the whole "fee refunded/exempt if you buy/have bought in the past" bug in her ear and she loved the idea.

So if they are going to do it, at least hopefully this way will keep regulars and buyers from having to pay.

South East / Kentucky auction advertising
« on: March 25, 2012, 11:29:06 PM »
Does anyone know how Kentucky advertises their auctions, or if they do at all? I've searched through ads dating back to 2008 and there are less than 10 for 5 counties.

Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / Nashville Noobie

Evening folks, thought I would take a second to intro myself. I'm Chester and my wife is Toni. We decided to start into this after she got fired from her job due to a siezure condition. She never really needed to work as my income covers everything we really need she just likes to to have something to do and her own money to buy my christmas and birthday gifts without me seeing how much money she really spent lol. Anyway we decided if she was going to work then it would be a series of 1-2 year gigs as her seizures get serious about once every 6 months and she misses about a week due to them. 1 week every 6 months is a big no no to a lot of employers. So I told her listen, why don't you do the storage auction thing? So she took a grand and started hitting the local route. That was about a month ago. So far we have bought three lockers, first one we might break even, 2nd one we sold one thing and paid for the locker +50 to the pocket. Third one we got for 5.00 and I found a place to sell some of the books we got for 53.00 so we are up on that one too. It's not a lot of money but like I said, it's more to keep her occupied.

Since starting we have also read about and started attending estate and other auctions and today we did a serious yard sale circuit and scored hopefully pretty good on it too. Needless to say she is having a blast with it all so far and we are ahead money wise. My favorite part of it all is the research. As I sit here I have several peices of glassware on my desk, a sterling silver salt and pepper carousel and a few peices of china to look for. All in all it's a lot of fun. I just hope it stays that way for a while. I'm sure a few Nashville people read this forum so if you see us say hi. She's usually the only woman at the auctions that doesn't have a dude on her hip lol.

The Treasure Chest / Hopeful score today
« on: March 17, 2012, 08:53:22 PM »
Storage units bombed for us today so we hit some yard sales. Stopped at one and offered 40.00 for the rest of what she had. Got it home and looked closer at this. Started to do some research and couldn't find that green logo for nothing. Then out of the blue I scored a hit on it. A lady has a different peice with that same logo. So I read what her description was and it said that that logo was the first one used by the Carl Schumann company from 1900 to 1927! She linked a site and I went and did some more reading and their experts believe that it easily could date back to 1861!! I've sent them an email with these same pics attached asking if it's possible there are reproduction peices out there or if it's even remotely possible that this could be original. Paid .50 after we averaged out the 40.00 across all the peices.

Other Forms of Selling / Site for selling books
« on: March 17, 2012, 12:40:28 AM »
New here and I haven't seen this mentioned. We bought a unit for 5.00 about a week ago. Got it home and started looking through it. Something I remember Dave H. saying was that books were easy money. So I'm like ok where? Did some research, found sellbackyourbook.com and gave it a shot. Ended up selling 7 of the books to them for 53.00! All the rest is gravy! Using the rest of the books for packing material  ;D
