It combines the realism of Storage Hunters US with the witty banter and cutaways of Shipping Wars.

With that being said I don't mind it, probably because of the accents, but the themed rooms are quite ridiculous.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: paintings
« on: February 17, 2015, 08:01:13 PM »
My most recent unit had several things that I have no experience with selling.  Thought I'd ask around for guidance from the experts (that's you guys!)

I have 3 "paintings" that I think are worth a little bit of money.  One is a print from the 40's of a Mexican artist...not an original.  But my research is telling me it's still worth a couple hundred.  Other one is a popular artist.  Last one might be an orig watercolor on canvas from the 50's.

Where do you usually sell things like this?

I have over 500 paintings from units and can help out.  What are the names, medium ..etc.

Also, if its not an original then its not worth much of anything.  If you are seeing it for a couple of hundred that is most likely retail which you would get 30% of if you sold it yourself.

Go to liveauctioneers.com and look up the sold items.  That will give you an idea if its worth anything on the auction market which is the best way to sell authentic and "valuable" art

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Designer purses, shoes and perfume
« on: February 17, 2015, 07:59:00 PM »
I'm busy this week!

One unit this week had well over 100 purses and even more pairs of shoes! Most of them are Prada, Michael Kors. Louis Vuitton. Coach.  I believe 50% are knock offs, but the others appear to be authentic.  Great condition.  Looks like she used everything once.

Is Ebay my best bet?

How would you sell them?

Chances are if half are fake the other half might be as well.  Its getting extremely difficult to tell the real from the fake so ebay will not be your best bet.  The market is flooded with fake so the prices are pennies on the dollar even for real ones.

If I were you I would go onto facebook and find a local buy and sell group and sell them all that way.  At least this way people know what they are buying, can meet you to look and there are no refunds and you wont risk getting banned.

No matter the brand you are getting $25-$125 for a bag.  Coach being closer to the $25, louis prada being on the higher end.

Perfume will sell on ebay.

Shoes like that are a tough sell because of the knock offs as well.  I'd go buy and sell if possible.

So had a unit full of product worth serious $$$$ and i had the high bid all week long so called the facility 3 hours before auction ended to verify the address and they tell me that there is a problem with the account for the unit im bidding on. I asked if the owner of the unit paid they said no and removed it right then. Maybe i always think the worst in people but a unit worth a ton of money selling for pennies on the dollar i assume the owner of the facility wanted it for himself.  :41:

Its better than it happened 3 days before than you actually winning and driving there only to have them pull it then... which happened to me.

In regards to facilities taking them off the block many contracts in ny state that once a unit is considered delinquent all items in the room belong to the facility.  They can give it to their cousin, keep it for themselves or keep the proceeds.

for the last several years only found small change a crumbled dollar in a purse here and there but last month bought a room for $150 and found $300 in cash and $600 in giftcards.  Best money room I've ever found.

From the data I have, you're right. The Houston area had around 25K units go to auction in 2013 and it has a population of 2.2 million . I think I made a post about it here on the forum a few months ago...which is probably where they they got the idea for this linkbait.  ;)

My guess is that LA, Dallas/Fort Worth, & Houston are the top contenders & NY (when you factor in all of the cities within a 50 mile radius.) Then, Chicago, Philadelphia.

Over 1700 units were advertised for auction in the DFW area LAST WEEK ALONE. As a buyer, considering the amount of auctions, the low cost of living/overhead and the booming resale market, I'd say the DFW area is the best place on earth a storage unit buyer/reseller could be.

thats a ridiculous amount of rooms to go up in one week.  NYC obviously has a lot more people than 2.2 but I think when you factor in the cost of real estate and work that into the equation, high populations, with relatively low costs for storage facilities = 1,700 a week.  Thats the place to be.

its basically click bait with no real info

NYC has 17M ish residents and probably has close to 3k+ rooms go up a year.
Long Island has around 600+ rooms a year

If you look in brooklyn there are multiple facilities each month that have at least 30-40 rooms each.

I would be interested in knowing which area has the most rooms go up a year but I'm fairly certain it would just be the largest cities in descending order

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Are you the silent bidding type?
« on: January 20, 2015, 12:44:58 PM »
The unfortunate part of this business is that if you hit a couple of good rooms and people find out they assume you always know what you are bidding on.  People will start to bid on rooms just because they see you bidding.  Its an easy way to skip the time needed to figure out good rooms on the fly and I get this alot.  I've had people tell me they only bid on rooms when they see me bid.

As such I talk to the auctioneer ahead of time and let them know if I bid I'll be using hand signals or other ways to hide it from the crowd.

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Brandi and Jarrod?

im sure a&e will pay for it if they do ...

I'm sure not being on the show, at least one of them was not their choice.

Basically they get a phone call to show up to the spot that they will be filming within the next day or two.  They have very little notice.

I guess they didn't get the phone call.

Also combined they still make less than darrell however its still quite a bit so if they wanted to they could buy every episode which will get boring.

They have no "main" characters now so none of them will be in every episode.  Also they are pulling 2 salaries so its an easy way to drop the cost of that episode.

They are still deciding on whether it makes financial sense to continue the series since its losing watchers every week.

However I still believe they renewed their married show for another season so they will still be around.

Rene, his wife and mary need to go .. however they wont because they are dirt cheap labor.. Mike B knows what they are doing to these guys.. its costing them more money to be on the show than they are getting.

I've bought and sold on SB and am very familiar with their legal fine print ..

If the winning bidder doesn't pay, per the contract, they will contact the next highest bidder on the sellers behalf.

This leaves it open on what happens if the 2nd and 3rd bidder don't want the room however because this language is in the website they are not due any damages unless they can provide the names of the 2nd and 3rd bidder and demonstrate that they have indeed suffered financially by them not paying and that they have exhausted their other stated alternatives.

Its bs and they wont win.  its pure intimidation and once the buyers start to demonstrate the level of harassment they can then sue them right back.

SB is going down a path that will cost them more money than its worth.

This can also be found on the FAQ section:

What if the winning bidder doesn’t contact me after the auction?
If the winning bidder fails to contact you and remove the entire contents of the storage unit, that user will be suspended from using StorageBattles.com indefinitely. Member Services will contact the 2nd and 3rd place bidders, and offer them the unit at their max bid. Member Services will take care of all contact with the previous bidders, while keeping you up to date on their progress. When a previous bidder agrees to purchase the storage unit, Member Services will reissue confirmation emails to both parties. You may also choose to repost the storage unit on StorageBattles.com.

I did 6 in dec but 12 in nov.  out of all 2 10x30s most were 5x5, 5x10's.  Nothing to write home about.

In a 150 room found $350 in cash, $200 in gift cards and a gold necklace that I scrapped for $250.

Other than that nada

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Online vs. Live Auction
« on: December 24, 2014, 07:36:13 AM »
The only reason I thought he might want to watch for a little while is because of my own personal experiences.

My very first unit was purchased at my very first auction for $400.  I dreamt of riches and a hidden motorcycle and all I got was several *****s, dirty underwear in purses and bag of dried up weed.  There was a dresser that was decent but that broke being loaded into the truck.

However I just kept buying and buying until I got it right.  It was an expensive lesson but I chalked it up to startup costs.

If I had to do it over again I probably would have watched a little more and bid a little less to learn what the heck I was doing.

If you think you can spend the $100 +/- dig through a room and take your time learning how to sell everything out of that room then its a good idea.

Since I have a slight ..very slight gambling addiction thing I never could do that.  I'd buy the first one and then heck since I'm already there might as well buy another one and don't forget that really good run 20 miles away tomorrow.. have to get to that one too.

Most if not all of the people that contribute to the forum started out in live auctions.  Online just got off the ground within the last 6 months.

If I were you I would start out going to live auctions and only when you fully understand what you are looking at, doing, dynamics of an auction, what drives up the bid ..etc. should you venture into the online world.

I personally think online is not the way to go due to the prices and, from my experiences, pictures being different than what was on the site.

Right now in my area (Long Island) rooms are going way high with terrible quality.  If you are in this area I would hold off on buying and just go to learn the trade.
