General Storage Auction Talk / Want some Campbell's Soup Equipment ?
« on: February 25, 2014, 08:44:32 AM »
You would need to be in the canning business to use the biggest pieces at this auction, but there are probably some shelving units, mop buckets, etc that most of us could either use or resale.

This sale is being conducted Feb 25, 2014 through the 28th.

Other Forms of Selling / Has anyone had experience with Worthpoint?
« on: February 12, 2014, 11:02:43 PM »
I really know next to nothing about this, but once in a while when I research something the item will pop up in a Worthpoint screen and of course it says something like "join to see what this item sold for"

I just did a search on reviews of Worthpoint and what I saw wasn't encouraging.

Picker's Paradise / Here we go again ...... Thrift Hunters
« on: February 12, 2014, 08:33:29 PM »
Well, given the broad thrifting aspect of flea markets, garage sales, yard sales, barns, etc this show probably won't destroy the picking business the way the storage wars shows did.

eBay / eBay Instructions for Using Watermarks in Pictures
« on: February 12, 2014, 05:35:44 PM »
Well, they have guidelines and even instructions on how to do it (see below) BUT....none of the instructions apply to their current 3 ways of uploading pictures...at least when I look at it.

I went into a listing I have scheduled for posting later today and deleted one of the 12 pics so I could try out their watermarking approach. When I tried to upload a new 12th pic there was no option for assigning a watermark to the new pic.

Thanks, eBay for offering all the picture opportunities but not including the watermarking option OR changing you "help" feature that talks about watermarking.

Guess I will continue to use a "paint" type program to lay BIG RED LETTERS on top of some of my pics.

Note: I use an eBay template I have been using for years. I'll look inside it and see if there are changing options.

Adding a watermark to your photos
You can use our watermark creation service to add a camera icon, your eBay user ID, or both, as a watermark on your photo. Note: Watermarks are the only text that can be on your photo.
To add a watermark to your photos:
1.   Go to the Add photos section of the listing form.
2.   Click the Add or remove options link, and then select one or both watermark options:
o   Enable watermarking with my eBay user ID
o   Enable watermarking with the eBay camera icon
3.   Click the Save button.
4.   Continue filling out the form.
When you upload your photo, we'll apply the watermark you selected. If your user ID is more than 24 characters, the ID watermark is automatically shortened to 24 characters to ensure it will fit the photo.
Note: The watermark you selected applies only to photos you've just uploaded. Changing your selection won't add or remove watermarks from previously uploaded photos. Watermarks aren't available for photos uploaded using our quick listing tool.
If you'd like to create your own watermark on your photos, follow these guidelines:
•   We only allow watermarks for ownership and attribution
•   Watermarks shouldn't distract from the image
•   Watermarks can't serve a marketing purpose, such as specific details about your item or customer service
•   Watermarks should be no bigger than 5% of the total image area
•   Watermarks should have an opacity of no more than 50%
•   Links aren't allowed in watermarks

eBay / eBay Wants to Use Pictures We Take in THEIR catalog
« on: February 12, 2014, 09:59:03 AM »
I don't know about any of you but I go to quite a bit of trouble to take good pics of my sale items. eBay wants to have the right to use OUR photos in THEIR catalog so other people could choose to use them to sell THEIR items.

Sure, they would give US the chance to use other people's pictures, but they would have to be super good to entice me to use them and most aren't.

Now if eBay wanted to Pay for that right it might be a different story and you could bet it would be .10 a pic or less.

Anyway, here's the email I received and maybe you did to. It gives instructions on how to opt out since they have automatically opted us in.

*****

Like most sellers, you may have enjoyed the convenience of automatically adding a photo to your listing from eBay’s vast catalog. The robust catalog of great photos benefits the marketplace and helps attract buyers and close sales.

As you may know, according to the eBay User Agreement, any photos uploaded to listings through eBay picture services may be added to and made available through the eBay product catalog—unless you change your photo preferences in My eBay to opt out of sharing.

During a recent technical update, the photo-sharing preference in My eBay may have been inadvertently reset for some sellers. We have temporarily stopped collecting photos until we could notify you and give you the opportunity to check your preference.

If you are fine with sharing, there’s nothing you need to do. If for any reason you prefer not to share, please opt out now through your "Site preferences" in the account tab in My eBay. Look for "Share your content" under "Selling Preferences". On March 12, eBay will again begin to collect photos.

We apologize for any inconvenience. As always, thank you for selling on eBay.

Sincerely,

eBay Seller Team

The Lounge / Dumb Starbucks Marketing Ploy
« on: February 11, 2014, 10:13:30 AM »
The Dumb Starbucks coffee shop was "uncloaked" as a stunt pulled by a Comedy Central comedian.

Starbucks taking a gentle approach so far.

usatoday(dot)com/story/news/nation-now/2014/02/10/dumb-starbucks-parody-free-coffee/5357597/

One line I read said people went to it just to get a cup with the "dumb starbucks" logo on it.
Got me to thinking that they would pop up on eBay.
That got me to thinking maybe I should run off a few thousand of them, but then I remembered the team of lawyers the real Starbucks has on retainer.

The Lounge / NFL next "battleground" for Gay Rights
« on: February 10, 2014, 09:14:39 AM »
I'm not a pro sports fan but I know this will be big story for football.  Once a few gay players start "coming out" the floodgates will open showing you don't have to be a stereotypical "fop" to be gay.

If a rough and tumble football player can be gay (and admit it) more bookkeepers and bookstore owners will be able to also.

eBay / Waiting them out on eBay
« on: February 09, 2014, 08:16:05 PM »
I'm never in a hurry to turn over sales items. If they don't go right away, they will eventually, and if they don't take up much space, what's the problem?

Anyway, I had a nice piano keyboard (not Fender but of that quality) on eBay at $1,200 in a buy it now or make offer listing. It was for local pickup as it was two pieces and each weighed over 80 pounds and they were big too.

Thirty days go buy, couple of watchers, no offers.  Relisted it for another 3 days. Couple of days in a guy from about 75 miles away offers $800 and I take it. Says it will be buy two mornings later. We exchange info for the pickup. I get up 2 hours before the pickup...email waiting for me which said basically "WE, just don't have enough in our budget right now for this."  Translation: My wife says I can't get it.

Three weeks go by. Woman 400 miles away in L.A. are offers $1,000. I take it. Time passes..no communication AT ALL.  Finally, put in a case with eBay. Takes the usual amount of time to get it through, but it does.

Now the 3rd 30-day listing comes up. A week in a guy pays the full-tilt $1,200 asking price using PayPal. I'm in my glory having proven (after two failed attempts) that there is "always" someone who will come through.

The delivery of this item was interesting, but that is ANOTHER story.

Moral is: don't give up on an item and hold out for bigger bucks..especially if you got it cheap.
The keyboard above set me back $180 at a piece by piece auction.

Picker's Paradise / It's raining ! It's Picking Time !
« on: February 08, 2014, 09:28:19 AM »
After 65 days of no rain in the central valley of California we are finally seeing rain and expect 2 to 3 inches this weekend with more coming next Thursday and Friday.

It doesn't rain here in the summer like a lot of the rest of the country, but rather from Nov-March. If we don't get it then, we don't get it.  Snow in the Sierras is like a storage basin and when the spring weather starts melting it, it flows to the valley (and some to southern California as well for Los Angelinos !)

******

Meanwhile, rain means no outdoor fleas (4 in my immediate area that I go to 5 days a week) and so...

PICKING picks up....3 estate sales this weekend...hoping for some good finds.

The Lounge / Kill Switches for Stolen Cell Phones
« on: February 07, 2014, 08:50:06 PM »
Powers that be (not cell manufacturers or carriers) are pushing for kill switch technologies which they say will cut down on "apple picking". In some parts of the country (major metros specifically) the theft is quite high.

If the phone is a brick using the kill switch...it will have the value of a brick...not 800 bricks !

******

In Australia they have had kill switch tech for a decade and guess what...no problems of the kind the carriers are suggesting (hacked phones, unable to use 911, etc).  It's just another expense for them so what do they care...right now I guess if one gets stolen it means the victim goes out and buys another one !

Here's a start to a partial answer to the question: How do state and city populations affect the profit locker quality and profitability?

How Many Cities Are There in California?

Answer:

There are 478 cities in California. A few of these are considered towns (22), while many are incorporated cities (456). California is 840 miles long. California is the most populous state in the United States, and the third largest one by area. California has over 163,000 square miles of land...like many large states a lot of it is "empty".

How Many Cities are in Texas?

Answer:

There are 1,208 incorporated cities in the state of Texas. 28 of those cities have over 100,000 people in them! Texas has a land area of over 261,000 square miles.

How many cities are in New York?

As of the 2010 United States population census, the 62 counties of New York State are subdivided into 932 towns and 62 cities.

Remember, Glendon Cameron?  This article he published actually has some valid points...in my opinion.

Personally, I can't stand his video efforts...his presentational style is just grating to me, but some of his written stuff is ok.

Note...he hasn't bought a unit for years.
