It looks like many of the Houston area storage auctions list whats in the units. Is this normal? How does one go about researching the owner (former) of each unit?

agreed lol. "i heard the owner of this unit was a gold dealer" or some crap like that. 99% of people who are losing their units are not someone who's going to be in the paper for their antique collecting more likely for their domestic violence case or bankrupcy, kidding of course not everyone who loses a unit is a deadbeat but overall its not going to be worth your time researching people to find out who they are, how much they make, and make an educated guess about whether they have good stuff or not.

I suppose if your looking in the paper and they have the names listed it only takes 2 seconds to google someone's name but my guess 99.9% of the time your not going to find anything at all let alone anything that will tell you its a good unit. drug dealers would be the ones I would buy if i did do research. jim smiths unit is up for auction and  he just got sentenced to prison for 50 kilos, im buying that unit could be stuffed with cash lol. aside from that thogh not worth your time.

Well, I discourage people from trying to research individuals.... I can understand researching companies. Without a social security number, address, etc., you aren't going to be able to locate these people. Hell, the storage facilities themselves have a hard enough time locating these tenants and they have their phone numbers and email address. Another thing to keep in mind is that half of the units advertised in the legal notices will never make it to auction so a lot of the research you do is in vain. Even if you can figure out what type of business the tenant was in, there is no guarantee that the contents are going to be related. A good example is a notice I read a few a weeks ago where the tenant was listed as a pizza company and the contents were listed as miscellaneous furniture, totes and clothing. Save yourself some time and sanity and make your buying decisions based on what you can see from the door.

Hey, I just go with my gut and do quite well. Research takes the element of surprise out ot the journey. When you reach under a pair of old socks in the bottom a box of old clothes and pull out a 14k gold ladies watch with eight diamonds THAT'S a surprise. That's just what  I did. Some of the smallest lockers can be gold. Go with your gut. Enjoy the journey!
