...a better server. I don't know if there is extra traffic, or if there are web search queries happening, but lately the pages on this site have been taking way too long to load. I've also received an occasional server error message.

I switched servers about a month ago. No change. I think it has something to do with the Google translate feature.

Anyway, I'll be upgrading the hosting to a dedicated server next week when we unleash the new website. ;)

Do you anticipate a speed improvement due to this change?

Well, I don't know. I'm on a plan with unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth now.

This is a question for StorMe. The other thing that could be slowing the forum down is the way it is coded.

I'm sure that all of the mouse over pop-up crap on every page doesn't help the situation any.

Yeah...what StorMe said!  ;D

When was the last time you looked at the error_log Travis?

Umm...never. As soon as the "Top Secret" site is unleashed, I'll have more time to look into it.

But will moving to a VPN or dedicated serer help the pages load faster?

The plans with unlimited space are notoriously slow, since you are sharing a server with often thousands of other sites that the provider is hosting.  However, it doesn't seem like the forum is doing enough traffic (yet!) for that to be much of a concern.

One amateur observation I have is that (looking at the bar in the lower left corner of the screen) every time I click on a new page, that social media gizmo on the left spends a lot of time loading stuff from Facebook and Twitter.  I don't know enough about it to know how that can be fixed, but there is a couple of second time penalty there every time a page loads to get that thing loaded.

Of course, it is good to be hooked up to social media.....

I'm starting to think that the dedicated server is overkill at this point. I can get reseller hosting with 50 GB of disk space and 500 GB of bandwidth for $25 a month or VPS hosting with a 1.13 GHZ CPU, 768 MB of RAM, 30 GB of disk space and 500 GB of bandwidth for $40.

I'm only going to have 3 sites on the hosting plan, the forum, my Texas site and the new site I'm build now. If I go with the reseller hosting, is it much different than the basic unlimited plan I'm on now or is the disk space and bandwidth dedicated to my sites?

I spoke with tech support at Host Gator about switching plans and he said that the shared servers are extremely fast and switching the plan wouldn't make a noticeable difference. He suggested enabling caching on the forum. Hopefully this should speed up load times. I guess we will just wait and see.

I just got this error message:

There has been a problem with the database!

This is a notice email to let you know that SMF could not connect to the database,
contact your host if this continues.

This is the fourth time I have got this message, so apparently it's time to contact the host.  :)

I just got this error when I logged into the forum:

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

It's starting to look like the slow loading issue isn't going to be on my end.

Here is another anomaly. Another website that I'm working on is on the same hosting account. The site isn't getting any traffic yet but I got the same error message. I'll call Host Gator on Monday when I have some free time and get this worked out.

All I'm seeing in the error logs is a few people who entered their password incorrectly, a banned user that tried to login several times. Oh, and this one.
