Would you pay $40 for a padlock?
« on: May 07, 2014, 09:19:33 AM »
A few weeks ago we announced that we were adding a store to the site which featured all kinds of things storage unit buyers and property managers could use in the field. At this time, were still adding product, but we're off to a good start.

One of the categories we've added is Locks. To my surprise, Abus manufactures some really high end disc locks that cost nearly $40. Up until recently, I hadn't heard of the Abus brand, but loyal customers swear by them. You should read some of the reviews.

I would consider purchasing one if I wanted to protect a unit that had some really valuable merchandise inside of it, but for everyday units, I couldn't justify the cost. So, would you ever spend that kind of money on a single padlock? Have you owned an Abus lock, and if so, are they as tough as they say they are?

Also, if anyone thinks of any products or categories that we've missed on the store, please let us know.

The only problem with a  lock like that is that most of the break ins that have occurred around here, the thieves have actually cut the hasp and not the padlock on a number of the lockers...so even if you have a great lock, it's not going to keep out a good thief.

Public Storage also pushes their cylinder locks and wants you to buy them when you rent at their properties that have them.  They tout how "secure" they are.  It takes less than a minute with a 1/4" bit and a cordless drill to be through one of those....I've drilled a few...for legitimate purposes of course, and they don't inspire confidence!

I think your best bet is an affordable lock with good insurance!

Agree that most of the break ins occur by cutting the sliding mechanism rather than the lock itself.

On the flip side when we are walking through a facility and I see a giant lock or a lock that looks heavy duty I always say .. "I wonder whats in there??"

If I was a thief I would specifically target that locker.

An experienced small time thief always goes for the easy entry. So if you were truly a thief you wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

If that's the case, then how do you explain this?

Hey, where did the smiley that rolls his eyes go?

Second row, to the right of the grill, or you can just type 2 colon marks followed by a right parentheses, no spaces. ::)

Remember I'm not cutting the lock just the slider so I could target it and have it open in under 2 minutes  ... if of course i was a small time thief
