I'm pretty sure hijinx like these were around no matter when you grew up. They're just easier to proliferate now with the internet.

That was a common gag/dare at house parties back in my day, before there even was a YouTube. People fell for it then and people fall for it now. Next video should be "I dare you/(bet you can't) to chug/drink a gallon of milk in one sitting."
