What is the deal with web designers?
« on: March 25, 2013, 05:40:44 PM »
What is the deal with web designers...especially the programmers. I pay well, I'm polite to them, and these guys just don't want to work. I can't figure out their problem. Do they have too much work on their hand or are they just lazy? Maybe I should just start treating my contractors like Armondo Montelango treats his. No offense StorMe, you may be the exception to this rule.

Web design firms typically put your work on a queue with other jobs. If you have a change request, it goes on the list and they get to it in order. If they have a lot of requests, it could be a couple of days, weeks even, before you see the change on your site. If your request is complex, they may have some difficulty creating the script to make it work properly.

There are A LOT of bad firms out there. In some cases, they just have a bad system of working requests. There are also A LOT of firms that outsource their programming (I used to work for one). Firms like that can take weeks to months to develop a relatively simple script.

Unless a web designer is overbooked, they should have that done within a quick period of time. As far as programmers, some slow as molasses but if your "project" isn't big enough for them and they have multiple projects, a gentle push is always in order.

I know someone who's been waiting for a programmer now for about two months to finish a site that doesn't look that complicated. However, if you are a one-man-show it could be a lot of work.

So I dunno. I got screwed on sound design on a short film because the sound engineer had another project with the same deadline as mine and didn't tell me. Yeah, guess what, the post production sound was off.

I think best thing is to find out "how" many projects they are working on to give you an idea of how quick or slow they are to get things in order.

Either that or set a deadline with a penalty and get it in writing.

We get this all the time in construction contracts. I've seen penalties for going past the contract deadline range from $100 to $2000 per day. I've never seen it actually enforced because it can create a lot of legal issues back and forth and tie up the right to occupy a property in the court proceedings. But just the threat of it is generally enough to make all of the contractors stay on top of things.

just a tip for anyone hiring web designers. most firms do not actually do the work themselves, they outsource it to an indian company, jack the price up about 4-6 times what htey are paying and bill you. they then just act as an intermediary between you and the indian company. if your just hiring some dude off craigslist to build you a blog okay he's doing the work but any us based web design firm for the most part is outsourcing for about a fifth of the price you are paying them.
