Title: Worst Christmas Gift of 2012
Post by: Travis on December 26, 2012, 10:52:08 AM
Anyone who knows me, knows that I find gift cards and cash, given during the holidays, extremely impersonal. I would much rather someone put some thought into a gift, even if I don't like it. So this year, one of my family members gave me a $15 Subway gift card. I was like "oh, thank you, you gave me sandwiches for Christmas." I guess I could always re-gift it, but I wouldn't want to be known as a crappy gift giver.

Anyone else get a crappy gift this year?

I'm not saying that their not practical, just impersonal. They're just becoming so common these days. You give someone a gift card and they give one back to you...it's like trading money.

i agree on the impersonal , but when somone gives me something i tend to hold onto it forever even if its something i will never use, right now im looking at a table top casino game i got around 2003 , its sitting on my closet shelf and i dont think i ever opened it  . For me the gift card helps me out space wise ,practicality wise , and i never have to worry about getting rid of it for sentimental reasons

Wow, don't you make me feel like a jerk.  I gave my 19 year old daughter a new flat screen tv, a bluray player, a food processer, and a gift certificate for fifteen bucks to, of all places, Subway  :-[ and another one to Starbucks.  I was feeling like I spoiled her, but now I'm thinking I should have left out the Subway card! ???

But in your case, the gift cards were icing on the cake. In your defense, Subway did run a lot of ads for their gift cards this December. Perhaps you were just subliminally influenced.  :o

I agree that gift cards are impersonnal and avoid them when I can. However, I did have to lower myself to the gift card level for a couple nephews that live far from me and I rarely see so as a result I had no idea what they have or need. Also a daughters boyfriend who fishes got a electronic gift certificate for an online fishing supply place that he likes (that's what he wanted so....) I also spice up my childrens Christmas stockings with a few gift cards for places they like (they are adults). I do like to receive them but not from close friends or family. I don't think it's the idea of the card itself that I don't like, more the fact that the exact amount spent is right there for all to see.
